Grandfather KhaoLak Resort

Grandfather Khaolak Resort review - a lovely boutique hotel in Khao Lak, but do the location and rooms suit you?

A pretty boutique hotel with a lovely pool and personal service - but our double room was much smaller than the photos promised, and without a car the location is cut off from Khao Lak life. Our score: 7.

High season, February

Grandfather Khaolak Resort is a small, family-run boutique hotel in Khao Lak, with bungalows tucked into greenery, a lovely swimming pool and a quiet atmosphere. On paper, it is exactly the kind of place that promises a calm, romantic holiday in Thailand. But alongside its strengths, there are two things worth knowing before you book: the differences between the room types, and a location that sits away from the areas where Khao Lak's tourist life is concentrated. Either one can completely change how your holiday feels.

Grandfather Khaolak Resort - a small hotel with plenty of character

Grandfather Khaolak Resort is in the Khuk Khak area of Khao Lak, in Phang Nga province, a drive away from Phuket.

It is a small property with around 15 units, set around a tropical garden and a swimming pool.

Unlike Khao Lak's big resorts, with hundreds of rooms, several restaurants and huge pools, the atmosphere here is more intimate and homely.

The units are scattered among the trees, some facing the pool and others the garden. The low-rise buildings, the greenery and the seating corners give the grounds the feel of a small holiday village.

The hotel is pretty and well kept, and its design is without doubt one of its strong points.

But to really enjoy it, you need to understand exactly what you are booking and, just as importantly, which part of Khao Lak you are choosing to stay in.

The pool - one of the loveliest things about the hotel

Grandfather's pool is one of the best reasons to choose it.

It is a beautiful saltwater pool, surrounded by tropical plants and the low guest buildings. Around it are sun loungers and seating areas, and the atmosphere is calm and pleasant.

The pool on the day we arrived (February 2025)

The pool is not especially big, but it suits the size of the grounds and gives them the feel of a private resort.

Unlike the pools at large hotels, where there are sometimes activities and music throughout the day, here you can enjoy a quieter atmosphere.

It is the kind of place to sit with a book, have a swim or spend a calm afternoon.

Guest reviews on booking sites back up this positive impression of the pool too. It is mentioned again and again as one of the property's strengths.

For us, the pool definitely lived up to expectations. It was beautiful, pleasant and one of the things we liked most about the hotel.

The rooms - where the gap between the photos and reality begins

Grandfather offers several types of accommodation, including double rooms and more spacious family units.

And this is a particularly important detail: not all the units are alike - not in size, not in layout and not in the experience of staying in them.

Some of the hotel's photos show especially inviting spaces, with seating areas, wooden furniture and warm décor.

These are exactly the photos that can make the place look like a carefully finished tropical retreat, where you can enjoy not only the bed and the pool but also quality time inside the unit itself.

But that is not necessarily the unit you will get.

The double room - much smaller than we expected

The double room we stayed in was much smaller than we had imagined when we booked.

It did not give us the sense of space or the pleasant seating corner we had hoped to find.

We want to be clear: we do not think every small room is necessarily a bad room.

There are plenty of places to stay in Thailand that offer compact, pleasant double rooms, and you can enjoy them a great deal when you book knowing that is what you are getting.

In this case, the problem was different.

Our expectations had been built around photos of a warm, inviting living space, with a lounge that looked like somewhere it would be lovely to spend time.

The cosy lounge we had seen in the photos was one of the things we had been looking forward to most on this trip. When we arrived and discovered that our double room was small and very different from the space we had pictured, the disappointment was considerable.

The gap between the photos and reality - the biggest drawback for us

There is a big difference between booking a small room knowing it is small, and arriving expecting a spacious, pleasant living space only to find you have been given something else.

In hindsight, we think that if we had known in advance exactly what the room we booked looked like, we would most likely have been happier with our stay.

We would have arrived with different expectations, without counting on the cosy lounge that had, in our minds, become part of the experience we were about to have.

In other words, the disappointment did not come only from the room itself, but from the gap between the holiday we had imagined and what we actually got.

That is also why we do not describe Grandfather as a bad hotel.

The grounds are beautiful, the pool is lovely and there are other types of unit that could suit different travellers very well.

But precisely in a small hotel, where each unit can have a different character, it is especially important that guests understand in advance exactly what their booking includes.

Why it matters to check the photos of the specific unit

On booking sites, photos of several room types sometimes appear in the same gallery.

Travellers can be won over by a photo of a lounge, a kitchenette or a large family unit, but actually book a different room category.

So before booking Grandfather, we would not rely on the general gallery.

It is worth opening the exact room category, checking its size, seeing which photos belong to it and confirming whether it has a separate seating area.

Our recommendation, then, is to look carefully at the photos linked to the specific room category, rather than relying on the hotel's general gallery. If the photos are unclear, ask the hotel for pictures of the unit you are booking before you confirm.

This is especially important for anyone choosing the hotel for the room design, not just for the pool and the location.

The family units - potentially a completely different experience

During our stay we also saw a larger unit, with a spacious, pleasant living area.

It was a completely different experience from the double room we stayed in.

The large unit looked particularly well suited to a family that wants space, privacy and room to spend time together comfortably.

And here it is important to us to separate our personal experience from our impression of the hotel as a whole.

We can easily imagine a family staying in the spacious unit, renting a car and having a very successful holiday here.

In that situation, the pool becomes the centre of the holiday, the unit gives everyone enough space, and the quiet location may well be seen as an advantage.

In other words, the same holiday that left us feeling disappointed could be a great success for another family.

The difference lies in the choice of unit, in expectations and in how you plan to get around the area.

The location - the quiet comes at the cost of convenience

The location is the second drawback of Grandfather Khaolak Resort, and no less significant.

The hotel is in a relatively quiet area, on a side street that is not part of Khao Lak's busy tourist centre.

If you arrive with a hire car, this is not necessarily a problem.

You can drive to the beach, go out to restaurants, visit the markets and come back to the quiet grounds in the evening.

But if you plan to get around on foot, it is a different story.

The hotel is not really in the heart of the restaurant and shopping area, nor is it on the beach.

Without a car, there is nowhere to eat within reasonable walking distance of the hotel.

You can walk to some places, but this is not a location where you step out of the hotel and immediately find everything Khao Lak has to offer.

And that is exactly what we missed.

Coming to Khao Lak - without really experiencing it

In our view, this is the most significant drawback of the location.

When we arrive somewhere new in Thailand, we do not just want a nice room and a pool.

We want to get to know the place.

To go out in the evening, walk the streets, choose a restaurant because it looks interesting, drop into a café, wander between shops and discover places we had not planned in advance.

For us, these are the experiences that make up getting to know a destination.

Khao Lak is not a big, bustling town like Patong, nor a crowded beach town like Ao Nang.

That is precisely why choosing where to stay matters so much.

Tourist life is spread across several areas, including Bang Niang and Nang Thong, with clusters of restaurants, markets, shops and cafés.

When you are staying at a relatively isolated hotel without a car, it feels far less natural to head out and wander.

Every outing takes more planning, a longer walk or arranging transport.

In practice, it is easy to find yourself spending most of your time at the hotel - not necessarily because that is what you wanted, but because it is less convenient to leave.

And so you can spend a few days in Khao Lak, enjoy the pool and the quiet, and still go home without feeling that you really got to know the place.

That is how it felt for us.

Is Grandfather really far from everything?

No. It is important to be precise.

The hotel is not in a completely cut-off area.

The Tsunami Museum is in the Bang Niang area, and the markets and beaches are a relatively short drive away.

But there is a difference between attractions that are a drive away and staying in a lively centre, where you can choose between plenty of places without planning your evening in advance.

So the accurate description, in our view, is not that the hotel is far from everything, but that it is less convenient for anyone who wants to experience Khao Lak spontaneously and on foot.

That is a very significant consideration, especially on a short holiday when you do not want to waste time getting around.

Should you rent a car or a scooter?

If you choose to stay at Grandfather, having your own transport can completely change the experience.

A hire car lets you reach beaches, markets and restaurants and come back to the hotel without relying on taxis.

That way you get the best of both worlds: spend the day in different parts of Khao Lak and return in the evening to a quiet place.

A scooter can also be an option for experienced riders with the right licence and valid insurance, but it is not for everyone.

If you do not want to rent a car or scooter, factor in the cost of taxis and the day-to-day logistics.

If your aim is to get to know Khao Lak by walking between restaurants, shops and beaches, we would rather choose a more central hotel from the start.

Which area is best to stay in Khao Lak?

There is no single area that suits everyone, but the choice has a big effect on the character of your holiday.

Bang Niang - for those who love restaurants, markets and a local atmosphere

Bang Niang suits travellers who want to combine the beach, restaurants, cafés and a market.

The well-known Bang Niang Market is here, along with a wide range of tourist businesses.

Even within Bang Niang there are significant differences between a hotel close to the cluster of restaurants and a place on a more remote side street.

So it is worth checking the exact location rather than relying on the name of the area.

Nang Thong - close to the beach and the tourist centre

Nang Thong is another area worth knowing.

It offers a mix of beach, hotels, restaurants and shops, and can suit anyone who wants to combine time on the beach with wandering about in the evening.

For travellers who are not renting a car, a hotel in a central spot in this area may be more convenient.

Quieter areas - for those after a resort holiday

Khao Lak also has quieter, more remote stretches of coast, home to large resorts and small guesthouses.

These can be ideal for anyone mainly looking for peace, the sea, a pool and rest.

But in that case, it is best to arrive knowing that the holiday will be centred mostly on the hotel, or to plan a hire car in advance.

Breakfast - smaller and more personal

Grandfather serves breakfast in a style that suits a small hotel.

Instead of a huge dining hall with dozens of stations, it is a more intimate experience.

According to reviews on booking sites, breakfast is one of the property's strong points, with fresh dishes, fruit and cooked-to-order options.

Guests also praise the personal service and the family atmosphere.

It is worth checking when you book whether breakfast is included in the price.

As for lunch and dinner, there is none of the choice a big resort with several restaurants offers. In practice, the hotel restaurant was closed for most of the day, and without a car there is nowhere to eat within a reasonable distance. So the choice of location matters especially if you plan to eat out every day.

The service - one of the reasons for the high scores

Despite our reservations about the room and the location, Grandfather gets very positive reviews for its service.

It is a family-style property, and the staff's personal attention comes up again and again in reviews.

Guests mention the courtesy, the willingness to help and the feeling of staying somewhere small rather than in a big, busy hotel.

The staff can also help arrange transport and give information about the area.

That is a real plus for travellers looking for personal, quiet hospitality.

Cleanliness and upkeep

Grandfather also scores highly for cleanliness.

The garden, the pool and the units are well maintained, and the place has a tidy, well-cared-for feel.

The greenery around the units adds a great deal to the character of the grounds.

On booking sites you will find reviews that highlight the cleanliness and the comfortable beds.

These high ratings make it clear that our disappointment does not necessarily reflect a general quality problem at the hotel.

For us, the main drawback was the gap between what we expected and what we actually got, combined with a location that did not suit our style of travel.

Why are Grandfather's ratings so high?

This is one of the most interesting questions in reviewing the hotel.

Grandfather scores very highly on booking sites, and many reviews describe guests who enjoyed the quiet, the pool, the service and the rooms.

We are not surprised.

It really is a pretty hotel, with a pleasant atmosphere and the potential for a successful holiday.

But high scores do not guarantee that a hotel will suit every traveller.

A family that books a spacious unit and arrives with a car may enjoy it very much.

A couple mainly looking to relax by the pool may see the quiet location as an advantage.

On the other hand, travellers who book a double room expecting a large living space, and who want to spend their evenings in central Khao Lak, may well be disappointed.

So beyond the overall score, it is worth reading what exactly guests liked and comparing their expectations with yours.

Who is Grandfather Khaolak Resort right for?

Families with a hire car: especially if you choose a large unit, with room for everyone and the option of heading out on day trips.

Couples looking for quiet: if you plan to rest by the pool and do not need a central location, you may enjoy it a lot.

Travellers who like small hotels: the family character and the intimate grounds are significant advantages.

Anyone planning trips with arranged transport: you can use the hotel as a calm base and head out to attractions in the area.

Who would we suggest choose somewhere else?

First-time visitors to Khao Lak who want to get to know the town: we would choose a hotel closer to one of the tourist centres.

Anyone not planning to rent a car or scooter: the location may make day-to-day life less convenient.

Anyone who likes to go out spontaneously in the evening: the choice in the immediate area is fairly limited.

Anyone booking a hotel for the room design: it is especially important to make sure the room you book really includes the spaces shown in the photos.

Anyone looking for a beachfront hotel: Grandfather is not a beachfront resort.

Would we go back to Grandfather Khaolak Resort?

The answer to this question is more complicated than it seems.

We can appreciate the hotel's beauty, its pool and its quiet atmosphere, and at the same time feel that our stay was not a success.

The double room did not live up to the expectations the photos had created, and the location kept us away from the Khao Lak experience we were looking for.

If we had come as a family, stayed in the large unit we saw and rented a car, our impression might well have been completely different.

But for our style of travel, where we love getting to know a destination through its streets, restaurants, cafés and the small encounters of everyday life, Grandfather simply was not the right choice.

It gave us a quiet, pretty stay, but not the Khao Lak experience we wanted.

The bottom line - a lovely hotel that is not for everyone

Grandfather Khaolak Resort is a pleasant, well-kept boutique hotel, with a beautiful pool, a tropical garden and personal service that wins plenty of praise.

It can be an excellent choice for travellers looking for quiet, especially families with a hire car and anyone staying in one of the more spacious units.

But there are two things we would check carefully before booking.

The first is the room category. Make sure the photos you fell in love with really show the unit you are booking.

The second is the location. If you want to get to know Khao Lak, go out to restaurants and wander in the evening without depending on transport, consider a more central hotel.

Our experience at Grandfather was disappointing, mainly because of the gap between expectations and reality. But that is no reason to rule the hotel out for everyone. It is a reason to understand clearly what it offers and who it really suits.
