Khao Sok

Rainforest, a magical lake and a night you will not forget

When planning a trip to southern Thailand, it is easy to spend most of your time on the islands and beaches. But Khao Sok offers something completely different: ancient rainforest, rivers and a vast lake ringed by limestone cliffs rising out of the water.

Full guide

We almost skipped Khao Sok. In the end it was one of our most special experiences in Thailand.

When planning a trip to southern Thailand, it is easy to spend most of your time on the islands and beaches. We almost did too.

But Khao Sok offers something completely different: ancient rainforest, mountains covered in tropical vegetation, rivers and a vast lake ringed by limestone cliffs rising out of the water. It is a place where you can wake up in tropical forest, take a boat trip between cliffs, kayak on the lake and sleep in a floating bungalow, far from roads and towns.

In February 2025 we came to Khao Sok after visiting Khao Lak. We spent a night on Cheow Lan Lake and then two nights at the Cosy Garden Khao Sok glamping site in the village area. They were two completely different experiences, and we are glad we did not skip either of them.

What should you know before booking? Khao Sok Village and Cheow Lan Lake are not in the same place. The distance between them is significant, and booking a hotel in the village is not the same as booking a stay on the lake.

In this guide we explain the difference between them, how to plan your visit to Khao Sok National Park, what a stay on the lake involves, and what to check in advance.

01Getting to know Khao Sok - the other side of southern Thailand

After beaches, islands and seafront hotels, Khao Sok was a refreshing change.

Instead of strips of white sand and open turquoise water, we found a landscape of rainforest, green mountains and dense vegetation.

Khao Sok National Park is not a destination for wild nightlife or shopping. You come here for the nature, the atmosphere and the experience of being surrounded by scenery that is different from the coastal areas.

But one of the things that surprised us was that the village area itself is a very pleasant place to stay.

It has cafés, restaurants, places to stay and the feel of a small travellers' town, not just an entrance to a nature reserve.

Two areas worth knowing

Khao Sok Village: the main place to stay, near the entrance to the national park. Here you will find hotels, guesthouses, glamping sites, restaurants and nature activities.

Cheow Lan Lake: a large lake surrounded by limestone cliffs and tropical forest, where you can take a boat trip and sleep in floating bungalows.

The distance between the village and the main departure point for boat trips on the lake is about 60 kilometres, and the drive usually takes about an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the route and conditions.

This is one of the most important points when planning your visit: do not book accommodation in Khao Sok assuming the lake is within walking distance or a very short drive.

02Cheow Lan Lake - the experience that makes Khao Sok worth the trip

✓ We visited | February 2025

Cheow Lan Lake, also called Ratchaprapha Lake, is one of the most spectacular places in southern Thailand.

The lake is surrounded by mountains and tall limestone cliffs, some of which rise straight out of the water. In places the scenery recalls the bays of southern Thailand, but instead of open sea this is a freshwater lake in the middle of nature.

We went on an organised trip that included a boat trip on the lake and one night in floating bungalows.

It was not just an attraction for a few hours. Staying on the lake was an experience in itself.

The boat trip on the lake

Even during the boat trip you realise how extraordinary the place is.

The longtail boat moves between the mountains, and the scenery changes the further you get from the departure point.

Instead of roads, shops and hotels, you see water, forests and huge cliffs.

It is an experience that is hard to convey in photos alone, because much of the magic is the sense of space and quiet.

Staying in the floating bungalows

One of the special parts of the trip was the night on the lake.

We stayed in floating bungalows with direct access to the water.

The rooms were basic but clean. It was not a luxury hotel experience, but simple accommodation in an extraordinary setting.

For us, that was part of the point.

You can step out of your room into the water, sit facing the lake and enjoy being right in the heart of nature.

Good to know: the standard of the floating bungalows varies a lot between camps. Some are basic and some are more upmarket, so check carefully the type of room, the bathroom, the electricity and what is included in the booking.

Kayaking on the lake

One of the activities we enjoyed most was being able to go out in a kayak on our own.

We felt safe and relaxed, and could enjoy the lake at our own pace.

It is a completely different experience from an organised boat trip: you can move slowly, stop and take in the scenery around you.

Of course, it is important to follow local safety instructions and use the required buoyancy equipment.

The food and the atmosphere

The package also included meals, and we really enjoyed the Thai food we were served.

But beyond the food and the scenery, we loved the sociable atmosphere of the trip.

We were part of a group, and the guides told us about the wildlife in the area and pointed out fish and monkeys during the activities.

The mix of a group experience and free time on the lake made that night special.

Should you stay overnight on the lake or just do a day trip?

You can also visit the lake on a day trip, but in our view staying on the lake gives you a different experience.

On a day trip you come to see the scenery and go back. When you stay, you remain inside the scenery.

There is time to kayak, swim, eat, sit by the water and feel the atmosphere of the place without rushing back.

If your schedule allows, we would choose a night on the lake, not just a day trip.

03What to know before booking a night on the lake

This is one of the most important sections of the guide, because not all lake packages include the same services.

Not every floating bungalow offers the same kind of stay

Deck of a floating bungalow with a ladder into the water, Cheow Lan Lake
The floating bungalow's deck, with a ladder into the water

Before booking, check:

  • Whether the room has a private bathroom or shared facilities.
  • Whether there is electricity around the clock.
  • Whether there is a fan or air conditioning.
  • Whether you can swim straight from the room.
  • Whether kayaks are included in the price.
  • Which meals are included in the package.
  • How long the boat trip is and whether there are other activities.
  • Whether transport to the departure point is included in the price.

It is important to know where the trip leaves from

We booked an organised overnight trip through Khao Sok Lake.

The meeting point was in the Ban Ta Khun area, near the entrance to the lake, not in Khao Sok Village.

That is a significant difference, especially if you are arriving with suitcases or planning to get there independently.

With our booking we were asked to arrive in the morning, leave our big suitcases at the operator's office and take a small bag to the lake with what we needed for the night.

How much does a night on the lake cost?

Just as an example, in February 2025 we booked an Overnight Superior Group Tour package for two people.

The package cost 8,800 baht (about $262 / €232) before VAT, 9,416 baht (about $280 / €249) in total for the two of us.

The national park entrance fee, 340 baht (about $10 / €9) per person according to the terms of our booking, was not included in the price.

A transfer from Khao Lak to the departure point cost us an extra 2,400 baht (about $71 / €63).

What Price (February 2025)
Overnight Superior Group Tour package for two 8,800 baht (~$262 / €232) before VAT, 9,416 baht (~$280 / €249) in total
National park entrance fee 340 baht (~$10 / €9) per person, not included
Transfer from Khao Lak to the departure point 2,400 baht (~$71 / €63), separately

These are historical prices from our own booking, not a current quote. They show why it is important to check the total price and not just the advertised accommodation price.

Our tip: before you confirm a package, ask for a breakdown of transfers, park fees, meals, activities and room type. That way you can genuinely compare offers.

04Khao Sok Village - not just somewhere to sleep before the lake

✓ We stayed here | February 2025

After the night on the lake we moved on to the Khao Sok Village area.

It was a different part of the experience, and we enjoyed it very much too.

The village is surrounded by tropical vegetation and green mountains, and has the relaxed atmosphere of a small travellers' town.

We found cafés, restaurants and pleasant places to sit. Although the area is mainly associated with nature, it also has a bit of evening life.

It is not a party destination, but nor is it a place where you have to shut yourself in your room after sunset.

Why give the village some time too?

Many travellers focus on the lake, but in our view it is a shame to treat the village as just a transit point.

It lets you enjoy Khao Sok at a different pace: sleeping among tropical greenery, sitting in a café, exploring the area and experiencing the local atmosphere.

The village is also a convenient base for activities in and around the national park.

05Where did we stay? Cosy Garden Khao Sok

✓ We stayed here | 8-10 February 2025

In Khao Sok Village we stayed at Cosy Garden Khao Sok, a glamping-style place to stay.

Instead of an ordinary hotel room, you sleep in designed tents in a tropical setting.

We loved the romantic atmosphere and the feeling of sleeping close to nature without giving up comfort entirely.

The tent we stayed in was pleasant and pampering, and the site was clean and well maintained.

The service was friendly too.

What about the toilets and showers?

This is a detail worth knowing before you book.

In the unit we stayed in, the toilets and showers were shared and located outside the tent.

For us they were clean and pleasant to use, but we know not everyone likes leaving the room to get to the shower or toilet.

According to the information available to us, there are also units with a private bathroom, so check the exact type of unit before booking.

Who would we recommend Cosy Garden to?

SuitsCouples and travellers who like an unusual place to stay, a romantic atmosphere and a feeling of being in nature.

Less suitableFor anyone who prefers a conventional hotel with all facilities inside the room, unless you choose a suitable unit.

Our tip: with glamping, check not only the photos of the tent but also where the bathroom is, how it is cooled, access to the site and what is included in the price.

06What else can you do in Khao Sok besides the lake?

Khao Sok offers a range of nature activities, but it is important to distinguish between what we did ourselves and other activities on offer in the area.

The activities in this section are presented as general information about the options in the area, not as our own experiences.

Rainforest walking trails

Khao Sok National Park includes areas of rainforest, streams and walking trails.

Some trails are suitable for relatively short walks, while others require a local guide or considerably more physical effort.

Check in advance the length of the trail, the terrain and whether a licensed guide is required.

River tubing or kayaking

Water activities on the rivers are offered around the village, depending on the season and the water flow.

These can be interesting options for anyone who wants to combine a relatively easy activity with tropical forest scenery.

Night safari

Local operators offer nature tours after dark, when you can try to spot nocturnal animals.

As with any wildlife-watching activity, there is no guarantee of seeing particular animals.

Caves and nature trips

In the wider Khao Sok area there are routes to caves and other natural sites.

It is especially important to check the weather before entering caves or taking routes that involve crossing streams. Rain upstream can cause water levels to rise quickly, even if it is not raining where you are at that moment.

07How to get to Khao Sok

Khao Sok is inland in southern Thailand, and you can fit it into a trip around the Andaman coast or a route that continues towards the Gulf of Thailand.

From Khao Lak to Khao Sok

We came to the area after our visit to Khao Lak.

Because we had booked a night on the lake first, we arranged a direct transfer from our hotel in Khao Lak to the tour operator's meeting point.

It was a convenient choice, because we did not need to go to Khao Sok Village first and then drive back towards the lake.

From Phuket to Khao Sok

You can get there by road from Phuket. The journey time depends on your starting point and whether you are going to the village or straight to the lake.

From Surat Thani to Khao Sok

You can also reach the area by road from Surat Thani.

This is a relevant option if you are combining Khao Sok with Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao.

The most important tip for planning your arrival: check exactly where you need to get to: Khao Sok Village or Cheow Lan Lake. They are two different destinations, and booking a transfer to "Khao Sok" without specifying the exact destination can cause confusion.

08Village or lake? In brief

This is not really a question of which is better, because they are two different experiences.

Khao Sok Village Cheow Lan Lake
Type of accommodation Hotels, guesthouses and glamping Floating bungalows
Atmosphere A travellers' town in the middle of nature Secluded accommodation on the water
Food Restaurants and cafés Usually meals included with the stay
Activities Nature trails and activities in the area Boat trips, swimming and kayaking
Comfort A wide range of standards Varies a lot between camps
Who it suits Anyone who wants flexibility and comfort Anyone looking for an extraordinary experience

Our recommendation: combine both

If you can, we would spend at least one night on the lake and one night in the village area.

That way you get both the special experience of sleeping on the water and the pleasant atmosphere of the village.

09How many days should you spend in Khao Sok?

One day - a taste of the area

If you are very short on time, you can do a day trip to the lake or an activity around the village.

But bear in mind that a day trip to the lake also involves driving and a boat journey, so the time at the lake itself is limited.

Two nights - a basic combination

One night on the lake and one night in the village let you experience both sides of Khao Sok.

This is the minimum we would consider if you want to get to know the place beyond a day trip.

Three nights - the pace we chose

We combined one night on the lake and two nights at Cosy Garden in the village area.

That gave us time to enjoy the lake and also get to know the atmosphere of the village without rushing straight on to the next destination.

Four nights or more

Suits anyone who wants to combine walking trails, river activities, nature tours and rest.

10When to go to Khao Sok

Khao Sok is in a tropical, rainy region, and it can rain there throughout the year.

December to April

This is usually a relatively dry period, which can be more comfortable for some nature activities and boat trips.

We visited in February.

May to November

During this period there is usually more rain, and the forest can be especially green and lush.

On the other hand, walking trails, caves and river activities may be affected by rain, strong currents and flooding.

Good to know: in Khao Sok the weather is not just a question of comfort. It can affect the safety of activities and whether they can go ahead at all.

11What to know before booking Khao Sok

1. The village and the lake are not the same destination

This is perhaps the most important detail.

Booking a hotel in the village does not mean you will be sleeping near the lake. There is a significant drive between them.

2. Not every lake stay comes with the same conditions

Some bungalows are basic and some camps are more upmarket. Check the bathroom, electricity, air conditioning, meals and kayaks.

3. The package price does not always include everything

Park entrance fees, transfers and some activities may cost extra.

4. Plan the order of your destinations

If you are coming from Khao Lak and plan to sleep on the lake, it may be more convenient to go straight to the boat departure point and only then continue to the village.

5. A night on the lake is different from an ordinary hotel

Even if the room is basic, simply being on the water can make the night one of the most memorable of the trip.

6. You do not have to choose between the village and the lake

If you have enough time, combining them gives you a fuller picture of Khao Sok.

So is Khao Sok worth visiting?

For us, absolutely.

Khao Sok was one of the places we were happiest to have added to our route.

Not because of a luxury hotel or one famous attraction, but because of a combination of experiences: the boat trip between the cliffs, the night in the floating bungalow, kayaking on the lake, the Thai food, the sociable atmosphere and the stay in a small village in the heart of nature.

We could have added a few more days on the beaches, but then we would have missed something completely different.

If you are planning a trip to southern Thailand, do not see Khao Sok as just a stop between destinations. It is a place worth giving time to in its own right.

Above all, plan ahead for the difference between the village and the lake, so you can enjoy both without logistical surprises.

The personal experiences in this guide are based on our visit in February 2025. Booking prices are historical. Descriptions of activities we did not take part in are based on general information; check current conditions and safety before you go.
