Where to stay in Phuket?
Our guide to the areas to stay on the island
Where to stay in Phuket: Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao, Surin, the south of the island, the Old Town and the northern beaches - who each area suits and what to check before you book.
Read the full guidePhuket is Thailand's largest island, and one of the destinations with the widest range of areas to stay. You can choose a hotel in the middle of a tourist area with restaurants, shops and nightlife, stay near a calmer beach, or book a resort far from the nightlife hubs.
But because Phuket is so big, where you stay in Phuket has a huge effect on the kind of holiday you have. A hotel that looks close to a particular beach on the map can be a considerable drive from the restaurants, markets and sights you are interested in.
In this guide we compare the main areas to stay in Phuket, explain who each area suits and what to check before you book.
Where to stay in Phuket - in short
| Area | Best for | Main advantage | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patong | Nightlife, shopping and going out | A huge choice of restaurants, shops and places to go out | Noise, crowds and the hotel's location |
| Kata | Couples and families | A beach, restaurants and a fairly relaxed atmosphere | The distance from the beach and the way there |
| Karon | Anyone who loves a long beach and space | A wide beach, less intense than Patong | The distance from the restaurant area |
| Kamala | A more relaxed holiday | A beach and a laid-back atmosphere | What is around the hotel |
| Bang Tao | Resorts and an indulgent holiday | A long beach, resorts and leisure complexes | The distances within the area |
| Surin | Couples looking for a beautiful beach and fairly quiet surroundings | A beach and hotels in well-kept surroundings | Access to restaurants and nightlife |
| Nai Harn / Rawai | A relaxed stay in the south of the island | Beaches, restaurants and a more local feel | The distance from the main tourist areas |
| Phuket Old Town | Food, markets, cafés and culture | A town centre with historic character | There is no swimming beach in the centre |
| Mai Khao / Nai Yang | Quiet and being fairly close to the airport | Northern beaches and relaxed places to stay | The distance from the rest of the island |
Our recommendation: if you are looking for a mix of beach, restaurants and a holiday atmosphere without the intensity of Patong, we would start by looking at Kata and Karon. If nightlife is especially important to you, Patong is a better fit. For a quiet resort holiday we would look at Kamala, Bang Tao and Surin.

What to understand before choosing a hotel in Phuket
Phuket is big, and its tourist areas are spread along the beaches and inland.
Most of the well-known resort beaches are on the west side, facing the Andaman Sea.
This side is home to Patong, Karon, Kata, Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao, but each of them has a different character.
Phuket Old Town is inland, more towards the east side, while Nai Harn and Rawai are in the south.
The distances between the areas are significant, so we do not recommend choosing a hotel on price or photos alone.
Before booking, we would ask three questions:
- Do you want to walk out in the evening to restaurants and bars, or would you rather spend most of your time at the hotel?
- Is a good swimming beach within walking distance important to you?
- Are you planning to travel a lot around Phuket, or to stay mostly in one area?
The answers will help you narrow your search down to the areas that genuinely suit your holiday.
The areas to stay in Phuket
1. Patong - nightlife, shopping and lots going on
General information about the area.
Patong is the best-known tourist and nightlife centre in Phuket.
It is a busy, lively area with a huge choice of hotels, restaurants, shopping centres, bars and clubs.
Patong Beach stretches along a wide bay, and behind it are commercial streets lined with businesses.
One of the places most associated with the area is Bangla Road, the main nightlife street.
In the evening its bars and clubs are open, and the atmosphere is very different from Phuket's quieter beaches.
Why stay in Patong?
The main advantage is convenience for anyone who likes going out.
You will find plenty of restaurants, shops, shopping centres and places to go out in the area, without needing a ride every time you leave the hotel.
There is also a wide range of accommodation at different price levels.
And the drawback?
Patong is a busy tourist area, and not everyone who comes to Phuket is looking for that atmosphere.
Near the nightlife streets there can be noise and a lot of traffic, even late at night.
If you would rather sit in a quiet restaurant in the evening and enjoy a relaxed beach holiday, another area may suit you better.
Who is it for?
Travellers looking for nightlife, shopping, restaurants and a lively tourist centre.
What to check
The distance from Patong Beach and from Bangla Road, and the noise level around the hotel.
We would not book a hotel near the main nightlife area without checking reviews for noise.
2. Kata Beach - beach, restaurants and a calmer atmosphere
General information about the area.
Kata is south of Patong and Karon, and it is one of the most appealing options for anyone who wants a beach holiday with restaurants and shops nearby.
The area has a sandy beach, hotels, cafés, restaurants and places to go out, but with a less intense atmosphere than Patong.
It is a combination that suits anyone who does not want to feel cut off from the tourist centre but is not looking for big parties every night either.
Why look at Kata?
The advantage is the balance between a swimming beach and tourist services.
You can spend the day on the beach and go out in the evening to a restaurant or café in the area.
For families and couples, it can be a more comfortable choice than Patong.
What to know about the location
Not every hotel in Kata is right on the beach.
Some hotels are up the side streets or a fair walk away, so it is worth checking the route there and not just the distance as the crow flies.
From some locations, the way to the beach is not as direct as it looks on the map.
Who is it for?
Couples, families and anyone looking for a beach holiday with restaurants and cafés nearby.
What to check
Practical access to the beach, the walking distance and the hotel's location in relation to the restaurants and shops.
3. Karon Beach - a long beach and a sense of space
General information about the area.
Karon is between Patong and Kata and is known for its long, wide beach.
Compared with smaller bays, the stretch of beach here feels open and spacious.
There are hotels, restaurants and shops alongside the beach, but the area is spread over a fairly large space.
What is the advantage of Karon?
Anyone who likes walking along the beach and enjoying surroundings less intense than Patong may prefer Karon.
The area also suits anyone looking for a beach holiday where the whole day does not revolve around shopping centres and nightlife.
And the drawback?
Because the area is fairly large, some hotels are a considerable walk from the restaurants or the livelier parts.
Here too, it is worth checking the exact location.
Who is it for?
Couples, families and travellers who love long beaches and a fairly relaxed atmosphere.
What to check
The distance from the beach, the restaurant areas and the shops.
4. Kamala Beach - a more relaxed beach holiday
We stayed in Kamala, at Calm Kamala Hotel, in February 2025.
Kamala is north of Patong and has a more relaxed atmosphere.
The area has a beach, hotels, restaurants and places to stay that suit anyone who wants to enjoy Phuket without staying in the busiest tourist centre.
Kamala can suit anyone who prefers to spend more time on the beach and at the hotel and less on nightlife.
Why choose Kamala?
The advantage is being able to combine a beach with fairly laid-back surroundings.
If you are looking for a pleasant hotel, restaurants in the area and fewer crowds, this is an option worth looking at.
What to check
Kamala is not uniform. Some places to stay are close to the beach and the restaurants, while others are further away.
So it is worth checking access to the beach and whether you will need transport.
Who is it for?
Couples, families and anyone looking for a more relaxed holiday than Patong offers.
What to check
The way to the beach, the food options in the area and the distance from places to go out.
5. Bang Tao - resorts, a long beach and an indulgent holiday
General information about the area.
Bang Tao is in north-west Phuket and is known for its long stretch of beach, resorts and accommodation complexes.
The area is also home to the Laguna Phuket complex, along with places to go out, restaurants and beach clubs.
It is an appealing option if you are looking for a comfortable holiday in a hotel with plenty of facilities, or if you are planning a longer stay.
Why choose Bang Tao?
The main advantage is that you can focus on the holiday itself.
There are resorts in the area that offer pools, restaurants and other facilities, alongside a long beach.
In some parts you can also go out to restaurants and leisure complexes outside the hotel.
And the drawback?
Bang Tao is a large, spread-out area.
Not all the hotels are within walking distance of each other, and not every place to stay is close to restaurants and shops.
So it is worth checking the hotel's surroundings carefully rather than relying on the fact that it is listed under the name Bang Tao.
Who is it for?
Couples and families looking for a resort holiday, anyone who wants a long beach and those planning to stay in Phuket for several days.
What to check
What is outside the hotel, whether there are restaurants within walking distance and what the transport options are.
6. Surin Beach - a beautiful beach and fairly quiet surroundings
General information about the area.
Surin is between Kamala and Bang Tao.
It is a beach area with quieter surroundings than Patong, with hotels and places to stay nearby.
The atmosphere suits anyone looking for a fairly relaxed beach holiday.
That said, Surin does not have the same concentration of restaurants, shops and nightlife as Patong.
Who is it for?
Couples looking for a beach and a more relaxed holiday atmosphere.
What to check
The distance from the beach and the restaurants, and whether you will need transport for evenings out.
7. Nai Harn and Rawai (Nai Harn / Rawai) - southern Phuket
General information about the area.
In the south of Phuket are the Nai Harn and Rawai areas, which have a different character from the main tourist beaches.
Although they are in the same part of the island, it is important to tell them apart.
Nai Harn - a swimming beach and calm surroundings
Nai Harn is known for its bay and sandy beach, and it attracts travellers who prefer fairly calm surroundings.
The area suits anyone who wants to combine a beach with a stay in the south of the island, far from Patong's tourist centre.
Rawai - restaurants, boats and a more local atmosphere
Rawai is associated with restaurants, especially seafood restaurants, and with boats leaving from the beach.
But Rawai Beach itself is not the usual choice for a swimming holiday.
So do not assume that every hotel near Rawai Beach gives you access to a swimming beach suitable for spending every day in the water.
Who are these areas for?
Anyone looking for a quieter atmosphere, travellers who prefer southern Phuket and those who do not need to be close to Patong.
What to check
Whether the hotel is close to a swimming beach, restaurants and shops, and how far it is to other areas of the island.
8. Phuket Old Town
General information about the area.
Phuket Old Town offers a different experience from the familiar beach holiday.
Here the focus is on historic streets, Sino-Portuguese buildings, cafés, restaurants, shops and markets.
It is an area that suits anyone interested in the urban and cultural side of Phuket.
Why stay in the Old Town?
If you prefer wandering the streets, visiting cafés, photographing colourful buildings and enjoying local food, you will find interesting surroundings here.
The Old Town can also work as a short stop as part of a wider route through southern Thailand.
And the drawback?
The Old Town is not near a swimming beach.
So if you plan to spend every day at the sea, you will need transport to get to the beaches.
Who is it for?
Travellers looking for food, cafés, markets and a historic atmosphere, who are not focused on a beach holiday.
What to check
The location in relation to the main streets, noise and transport to the beaches.
9. Mai Khao and Nai Yang (Mai Khao / Nai Yang) - the beaches of northern Phuket
General information about the area.
In the north of Phuket, near the airport, are the beaches of Mai Khao and Nai Yang.
These areas are better suited to anyone looking for a quiet holiday or a place to stay in the northern part of the island.
Mai Khao - space and resorts
Mai Khao is known for its long beach and places to stay that focus on resorts and relaxed holidays.
If you want to spend most of your time at the hotel and on the beach, this area is worth a look.
That said, it is fairly far from the main tourist beaches in south-west Phuket.
Nai Yang - a fairly calm area near the airport
Nai Yang has places to stay, restaurants and a beach in the north-west of the island.
It can suit anyone looking for calmer surroundings or who prefers to stay fairly close to the airport.
Who is it for?
Anyone looking for a quiet holiday, a resort or a place to stay in northern Phuket.
What to check
The distance from the other areas where you plan to spend your time, and the transport options.
Patong, Kata or Karon - where is it better to stay?
This is one of the main dilemmas when working out where to stay in Phuket.
All three areas are on the island's west coast, but they offer different experiences.
| Topic | Patong | Kata | Karon |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character | Busy and lively | Comfortable and fairly relaxed | A long beach and a moderate atmosphere |
| Nightlife | The liveliest | Restaurants and bars | Quieter evenings out |
| Beach | A busy town beach | A sandy bay | A long, wide beach |
| Families | Possible, depending on the location | Very suitable | Very suitable |
| Shopping | A huge choice | Local and tourist shops | Shops and restaurants |
| Main advantage | Close to the nightlife | A balance between beach and restaurants | Space and a long beach |
What would we choose?
If we were coming to Phuket mainly for restaurants, bars, shopping and nightlife, we would look at Patong first.
For a more relaxed holiday, with a pleasant beach and restaurants nearby, we would start with Kata or Karon.
If you prefer a resort holiday with fewer trips out to nightlife areas, it is also worth looking at Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao.
Where to stay in Phuket with children
For families coming to Phuket for a beach holiday, Kata and Karon are two good places to start.
In both areas you will find beaches, hotels, restaurants and tourist services.
Kamala can also suit anyone looking for calmer surroundings.
Bang Tao offers more options in the form of large resorts, where the hotel's facilities can be a central part of a family holiday.
With children, we especially recommend checking the distance between the room and the beach, the walking route and whether you can go out to restaurants without long drives.
It is also worth checking the hotel's own facilities, rather than relying on the name of the area alone.
Where to stay in Phuket for couples
It depends on the kind of holiday you are looking for.
For couples who like going out in the evening to restaurants and bars, Kata can offer a good balance between beach and nightlife.
If you are looking for a quieter hotel and a relaxed holiday, it is worth looking at Kamala, Surin or Bang Tao.
If the aim is a holiday where you spend a lot of time at the hotel enjoying the pool, the restaurant and the view, it is also worth looking at the resorts on Phuket's northern beaches.
But in Phuket, we would not assume that a more expensive or more remote hotel is automatically a better choice for a couple.
It is important to check what is around it, especially if you like going out in the evening.
Should you stay in Phuket Town or by the beach?
This question mostly comes down to the purpose of your visit.
If you are coming to Phuket for beaches, the sea and a pool, it is usually better to choose a beach area.
Staying in the Old Town is better suited to anyone who wants to enjoy the streets, the food, the cafés and the markets.
You can of course also visit the Old Town on a day trip or for an evening, without staying there.
So we would not choose Phuket Town as a base for a beach holiday, unless there is another reason for it in your route.
How to choose a hotel in Phuket
When looking at hotels in Phuket, there are a few things we recommend checking before you book.
1. The real distance from the beach
Not every hotel listed under a beach's name is actually next to the sea.
In some places there are main roads, hills or walking routes that are not clearly visible on the booking map.
It is worth checking the exact route from the hotel to the beach.
2. What is around the hotel?
If going out to a restaurant or café every evening matters to you, it is worth checking what is within walking distance.
In Phuket, a hotel in a quiet, remote area can be a good choice if you are looking for rest, but less convenient if you plan to go out a lot.
3. How much travelling will you need to do?
If you plan to spend each day in a different area, the distances around Phuket can affect your holiday.
It is worth choosing a base that suits most of the activities you are planning, rather than driving from one end of the island to the other every day.
4. Is the hotel in a noisy area?
Especially in Patong, it is important to check whether the hotel is near a main nightlife street.
Even if the location looks very convenient, noise at night can spoil your stay.
5. What does the hotel itself offer?
If you plan to spend a lot of time at the hotel, it is worth checking the pool, the restaurants, the room category and the access to the beach.
If the hotel is mainly a place to sleep between trips, a convenient location may matter more than a long list of facilities.
How to get around Phuket
Phuket is a large island, and getting between the beaches on foot or by public transport is not always simple.
Within areas such as Patong and Kata you can walk to some restaurants and shops, depending on where your hotel is.
But getting between beaches and different parts of the island often requires transport.
You can use taxis, ride-hailing apps, private transfers and some of the local bus routes.
There are also bus services linking the airport with some of the beach areas, but it is worth checking the current routes and operating hours.
If you are not planning to rent a car or a scooter, we would give particular weight to the hotel's location and its distance from the restaurants and the beach.
Should you split your stay between two areas in Phuket?
If you are staying in Phuket for just a few days, we would usually prefer to choose one area that suits most of your plans.
That way you do not need to change hotels, pack again and spend time moving between places to stay.
But if you are planning a longer holiday and want to enjoy two different experiences, you could consider splitting your stay.
For example, a few nights in a central area with restaurants and nightlife, then a few nights at a quieter resort.
Another option is to combine a stay in a beach area with a night in Phuket Old Town, if you are especially interested in the food, the markets and the urban side of the island.
That said, we would not split our stay just to tick off another area. It is only worth doing if there is enough time to enjoy each place.
How many nights to stay in Phuket
Two nights - a short visit
Two nights can suit anyone fitting Phuket into a route that includes other destinations in southern Thailand.
On a short visit we would choose one area and not waste time moving between hotels.
Three to four nights - beaches and trips
Three to four nights let you combine the beach, restaurants, markets and day trips.
For a first visit to Phuket, we would choose an area that makes it easy to reach most of the places on your plan.
Five nights or more - a more varied holiday
A longer stay gives you time for the beaches as well as a visit to the Old Town, trips in the area and rest.
You can consider staying in one area or splitting your stay between two, depending on the kind of holiday you want.
When to book a hotel in Phuket
November to April is generally considered the better time for a beach holiday in Phuket.
From May to October there is a higher chance of rain and rough seas, especially on the west coast beaches.
During this period swimming conditions can change, and sometimes there are strong currents and red flags banning people from going into the water.
So it is worth checking the weather forecast and the sea conditions, and not assuming that a beach that is fine for swimming in one season will be just as safe all year round.
If a beach holiday is your main aim, the season you come in makes a big difference.
FAQ: staying in Phuket
What is the best area to stay in Phuket for a first visit?
If you want a beach holiday with restaurants and tourist services, we would start by looking at Kata and Karon. Patong is a better fit for anyone for whom nightlife and shopping are especially important.
Which is better - Patong or Kata?
Patong is livelier and busier, with nightlife and shopping centres. Kata suits anyone who prefers a beach and restaurants in a fairly relaxed atmosphere.
Where to stay in Phuket with children?
Kata, Karon and Kamala are options worth looking at. It is worth choosing a hotel with easy access to the beach and facilities that suit your children's ages.
Where to stay in Phuket for a quiet holiday?
You can look at Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao and also the northern beaches such as Mai Khao and Nai Yang.
Is Phuket Town suitable for a beach holiday?
Not really. The Old Town is better suited to food, markets, historic streets and cafés. To reach the beaches you need to use transport.
Do you need a car in Phuket?
Not necessarily, but the distances between areas are significant. If you are not planning to rent a car, it is especially important to choose a hotel close to the beach and the places where you want to spend your time.
Which area of Phuket is best for nightlife?
Patong is the area most associated with nightlife, mainly around Bangla Road.
Is it worth staying in Rawai?
Rawai can suit anyone looking for a more relaxed atmosphere in southern Phuket, but bear in mind that Rawai Beach itself is not the area's main swimming beach. If you want to swim, it is worth checking how close you are to Nai Harn.
Our bottom line
In Phuket there is no single area to stay that suits every kind of traveller.
Patong suits anyone who wants nightlife, shopping and a lively tourist centre. Kata and Karon offer a convenient mix of beaches and restaurants, while Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao are better suited to anyone looking for a relaxed holiday.
The Old Town suits anyone interested in food, cafés and markets, and the beaches in the south and north can suit those who prefer to get away from the busy areas.
Before booking a hotel in Phuket, we recommend first choosing the area that suits the holiday you want, and only then comparing hotels.
On an island as big as Phuket, the wrong location can turn every outing from the hotel into a drive.
