Queen's Cabaret, Koh Tao - the show that surprised us

A colourful, funny and dazzling show that felt like Broadway to us - in the heart of Koh Tao

We had not planned to go to a cabaret show on Koh Tao. In fact, we did not even know there was one. But one evening, wandering the streets of Sairee, we stumbled on one of the most surprising and enjoyable experiences we had in Thailand. A colourful, funny, high-energy show, with performers so talented that at moments we felt we were watching a Broadway production.

Koh Tao is an island known mainly for diving, beautiful beaches, beach bars and a relaxed atmosphere. A cabaret show of this calibre was probably the last thing we expected to find here.

And that is exactly what made the experience so special.

It all started with curiosity on the street

One evening we were walking around Sairee when we saw a group of performers standing outside a venue, inviting people in.

We did not really understand what it was. Curious, we peeked inside, and the show was already in full swing. From the little we managed to see, it was clear that something interesting was going on in there.

We decided to come back another evening and watch the show from the start.

At that point we still did not know what to expect. We thought it might be a pleasant show for tourists, something to fit in before going out for drinks or a night out.

We had no idea how much we were about to love it.

When we came back, we arrived early to get good seats. That turned out to be an excellent decision, because once the show began, we did not want to miss a thing.

Queen's Cabaret - much more than a show for tourists

Queen's Cabaret is a cabaret show held in the Sairee area of Koh Tao.

The show combines dance, music, lip-syncing, humour, extravagant costumes, spectacular stage make-up and interaction with the audience.

But that description does not really capture what happens on stage.

From the moment the show began, we were drawn in.

The pace, the energy, the transitions between numbers, the costumes and the performers' stage presence were simply exceptional.

Each of them brought something different to the stage. Some stood out for their dancing, others for their charisma, their humour, their facial expressions and their ability to keep the audience spellbound.

What impressed us most was the professionalism.

This is not just another show where people get up on stage and dance to well-known songs. You can see the work behind it: the choreography, the timing, the transitions, the ability to deliver a whole number with complete confidence and stay connected to the audience.

One of us has danced for many years and knows how to appreciate a good performance. Here we felt we were watching real stage artists.

To us, it was a performance on a level that reminded us of Broadway - except that instead of a grand theatre in New York, we found it by chance on a small island in Thailand.

Britney Spears, pop divas and a show you cannot stay indifferent to

One of the things that makes Queen's Cabaret so much fun is the music.

The show is built from numbers set to well-known pop hits, with choreography, facial expressions, costumes and movement that give each song its own character.

Over the years, visitors have recorded performances there to music by Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, Rihanna and ABBA, alongside Thai music. Other reviews also mention numbers inspired by Tina Turner, Christina Aguilera, Dua Lipa and Kylie Minogue.

The repertoire may change from night to night, so you will not necessarily hear the same songs at every show.

A large part of the show is based on lip-syncing - performing to a recording, where the artist uses movement, expression and acting to create the feeling that she herself is singing the song.

And when it is done well, it takes far more than moving your lips in time with the music.

The performers at Queen's Cabaret manage to turn the songs into small shows in their own right. They know exactly when to look at the audience, when to add a dramatic gesture, when to make people laugh and when to let the dancing do the talking.

And the audience? It is an integral part of the celebration.

The costumes, the hair and the make-up - a whole world of creativity

For one of us, a professional make-up artist and hairstylist, it was hard to take her eyes off their looks.

The costumes were simply incredible: feathers, sequins, shiny fabrics, big headpieces, stage gowns and lots of colour.

Every number brought a different look, and every look was part of the character and the story the performer created on stage.

But what fascinated us even more was the make-up.

Stage make-up is a field in its own right. It has to look impressive even from a distance, stand up to strong lighting, emphasise the features and last through a performance that involves movement, dancing and sweating.

Their make-up was precise, dramatic and full of presence.

Defined eyes, striking lashes, contouring, highlighting, carefully done lips - it all came together into a rich and spectacular stage look.

We watched them and wondered who was responsible for all of it.

Is there a professional make-up artist who comes in before every show? Does someone create the looks for them?

The professional curiosity of one of us would not let it rest.

The conversation with one of the performers that amazed us even more

After the show we went up to one of the performers and asked her about the make-up.

We wanted to know who did their make-up before they went on stage.

Her answer really surprised us.

She told us that they do not have a professional make-up artist getting them ready for the show. They learned to do their own make-up, and it is part of their job and of the stage persona each of them creates.

We stood there, simply in awe.

Because up to that moment we had already admired their dancing, their performance and their presence. And then we discovered that they are also responsible for such a big part of how they look.

For us, with one of us working in make-up and hair, that added another layer of appreciation.

Behind the glamour you see on stage there is not only talent, but also learning, practice, creativity and attention to the smallest details.

Suddenly everything we had seen that evening looked even more impressive.

The performers behind the show

What amazed us about Queen's Cabaret was, above all, the performers' talent.

Each of them was a performer in her own right, with stage presence, impressive dancing, precise facial expressions and charisma that is impossible to ignore.

The show combines elements of cabaret, drag and musical theatre, with numbers performed to well-known hits, gorgeous costumes and elaborate stage make-up.

But beyond all the glamour, what really stood out was the standard of performance. They do not just dance to the music; they embody characters, tell a story, connect with the audience and manage to turn every number into a small show of its own.

To us, it was an experience on the level of a fully professional production. Each of them was a talent, and together they created a show that was captivating, funny and full of energy.

And when we learned, chatting with one of the performers, that they had also taught themselves to do their own make-up, our admiration for them only grew.

The audience is part of the show

One of the things we loved most about that evening was the atmosphere.

This is not a show where the audience sits quietly and claps politely at the end of each number.

People laughed, clapped, sang along to the familiar songs and reacted to everything happening on stage.

The performers know exactly how to work a crowd. They make eye contact, come up close to the audience, improvise funny moments and sometimes invite people to join in.

That interaction is part of the magic of the place.

There is something very liberating about an evening where everyone has simply come to have a good time, without taking themselves too seriously.

Even if you do not usually go to cabaret or drag shows, we think there is a good chance you will be pleasantly surprised.

We certainly were.

And the cocktails were excellent too

In all our excitement about the show, we almost forgot to mention that the cocktails were really good too.

And that is part of the experience.

You arrive, order a drink, settle into a good seat and begin an evening of music, laughter and entertainment.

There is no need to dress up, no need to plan a complicated evening, and no need to be a die-hard cabaret fan.

Just come with an open mind and let the performers do their thing.

For us, it was one of the most enjoyable evenings we had on Koh Tao.

How much does Queen's Cabaret cost?

One of the show's advantages is the affordable price for the experience you get.

In the past, entry was usually free with no separate ticket, as long as you bought at least one drink. That also matches our memory of our visit.

Over the years the pricing has changed, and visitor reviews from 2025 and 2026 mention a price of about 300 baht (about $9 / €8) per person, including one drink.

In other words, you do not need to buy both an expensive ticket and a drink to enjoy the show.

Bring a little extra cash to tip the performers if you enjoyed it. On some evenings you can also have your photo taken with them after the show, and it is customary to leave a tip for the photo.

Prices and entry terms may change, so it is worth checking on the spot.

When is the show on, and how do you get there?

Queen's Cabaret is in the Sairee area, one of Koh Tao's tourist hubs, a short distance from Sairee Beach.

According to island guides and visitor reviews, shows are usually held in the evening, starting at around 21:30.

It is worth arriving at around 21:00 to get a good seat, especially at busy times of year.

The length of the show varies with the evening and the format. Visitor reviews mention anything from about an hour to nearly two hours, so set aside the evening for it and do not count on an exact finishing time.

Our tips for a great night at the cabaret

Arrive early. This is our most important tip. We got there ahead of time to choose good seats, and it was worth it. The closer you sit, the more you can appreciate the facial expressions, the make-up and the small details of the costumes.

Do not arrive with low expectations just because it is a show on a small island. We did not expect a production like this, and that is probably part of the reason the experience was so surprising.

Come ready to join in. You do not have to go up on stage, but it is worth arriving in a good mood and being part of the atmosphere. If you are sitting in the front rows, the performers may turn to you too.

Have cash ready for tips. It is a nice way to show appreciation for the performers' hard work.

Do not skip the show just because you are not into nightlife. This is not just another night at a bar. It is a proper show, and it can be a great night out even if you prefer cultural experiences to parties.

Is Queen's Cabaret for everyone?

We think it is one of the best nights out you can fit into a holiday on Koh Tao, but it is worth knowing in advance what kind of show it is.

It is a colourful cabaret, with humour, flirting with the audience, sometimes revealing costumes and moments of playful interaction.

The atmosphere is light-hearted and uninhibited, and the show is mainly for people who come to enjoy music, dancing and humour.

If you love live shows, musical theatre, drag or simply an evening with lots of energy, all the ingredients for a great experience are here.

And even if this is your first time at a show of this kind, perhaps that is exactly why it will surprise you.

Why this is one of our warmest recommendations on Koh Tao

When we think back to that evening, what we remember first is the sense of surprise.

We did not know what we were walking into. We had not read any recommendations beforehand and did not arrive expecting a particularly high-calibre show.

We were simply curious about something we had seen on the street.

And in the end we found ourselves sitting in front of exceptionally talented performers, marvelling at the dancing, the performances, the costumes and the make-up, and enjoying every moment.

The conversation with one of the performers after the show only deepened our appreciation of them. Knowing that they had taught themselves to do their own make-up, and that they put so much into creating their stage look, made us see the whole experience through the professional eyes of one of us as well.

We left feeling that we had seen something truly special.

If you are coming to Koh Tao, do not miss Queen's Cabaret.

It does not matter whether you are travelling as a couple, with friends or on your own. To us, it is one of the most enjoyable and surprising experiences the island offers, and one of the evenings we remember most from our trip to Thailand.

One more evening on Koh Tao not to miss

A small show on an island, with a huge stage presence. If you are in Sairee in the evening, it is worth making room for it in your plans.
