Khao Lak is not a small beach town where all the hotels are within walking distance of each other. The resort area stretches along roughly 20-25 kilometres of beaches, with several areas to stay that are very different in character. In some you can head out in the evening to restaurants and markets; in others the hotel and the beach are the heart of the holiday.

In February 2025 we stayed in the Bang Niang area, at Grandfather KhaoLak Resort, and saw how much the choice of location shapes the experience. In this guide to where to stay in Khao Lak we sort out the areas, so you can choose not just a beautiful hotel, but a place that suits the way you like to spend your holiday.

Where to stay in Khao Lak - in short

Area Type of holiday Main advantage Good to know
Bang Niang Beach, market and restaurants Things to do in the evening Check the real walking distance
Nang Thong Beach and a tourist centre Restaurants, cafes and shops The hotel's exact location matters
Khuk Khak Resorts and a quiet beach Space and rest You may need transport
Pak Weep A relaxed holiday by the sea Beaches and resorts Further from the centre
Bang Sak A quiet, spacious beach A less crowded atmosphere Check what services are nearby

Our tip: if you like going out in the evening to restaurants, markets and cafes, we would start the hotel search in Bang Niang or Nang Thong. If you are after a holiday spent mostly at the hotel and on the beach, it is worth looking at the areas further north as well.

The first question: walk out in the evening, or choose a quiet resort?

Before choosing a hotel in Khao Lak, it is worth deciding what kind of holiday you want.

You can pick a beachfront resort, spend most of the day there and leave it mainly for trips. Or you can pick a hotel in an area with restaurants, shops and a market, so it is easy to go out in the evening without arranging a ride every time.

We like to combine a relaxing holiday with the chance to go out and explore. That is why we chose to stay in Bang Niang, an area where we especially enjoyed the market and the evening atmosphere.

But if you prefer a quiet holiday with plenty of time at the pool and on the beach, you may actually enjoy a more remote hotel.

The areas to stay in Khao Lak

Bang Niang - market, restaurants and evening atmosphere

The area where we stayed in February 2025

Bang Niang is one of the easiest options if you want to combine a beach holiday with restaurants, shops and a night market.

This is the area we chose to stay in during our visit to Khao Lak.

We stayed at Grandfather KhaoLak Resort, and during our stay we especially enjoyed Bang Niang Market and the atmosphere in the area in the evenings.

The market was a big part of the experience for us. We loved being able to step out of the quiet holiday mood and spend time somewhere with more movement and life.

The area also has restaurants, cafes, shops and places to stay at a range of prices.

The advantage of Bang Niang is that you can combine time on the beach with going out to restaurants and the market, without the whole holiday revolving around the hotel's facilities.

That said, Bang Niang is a fairly large area. Not every hotel is within an easy walk of the market, and not every hotel is right on the beach.

So it is not enough to see that a hotel is in Bang Niang. It is important to check its exact address and its surroundings.

Who is it for?

Couples and travellers who want a beach holiday with options for food and going out in the evening, and anyone who would rather not depend on a taxi every time they leave the hotel.

What to check?

The real distance from the hotel to Bang Niang Market, the restaurants and the beach. Check all three separately, and do not assume that being close to one means being close to the others.

Nang Thong - beach and a tourist centre

Information from outside sources - we did not stay in this area.

Nang Thong is in the southern part of the Khao Lak resort area, next to the Bang La On centre.

It is an area that combines a long beach with restaurants, cafes, shops and hotels.

Compared with the quieter northern areas, Nang Thong lets you combine a beach holiday with everyday convenience.

It can suit anyone who wants to leave the hotel to eat or wander around a tourist area, and does not want to spend the whole holiday inside the resort.

That said, here too it is important to check the hotel's exact location.

Who is it for?

Couples and travellers looking for a beach with tourist services fairly close by.

What to check?

The hotel's distance from the beach and from the main road, and whether you can walk to restaurants and shops.

Khuk Khak - long beaches and quiet resorts

Information from outside sources - we did not stay in this area.

Khuk Khak has a long beach and a fairly relaxed atmosphere, with resorts and places to stay spread along the shore.

It is an area that can suit anyone who comes to Khao Lak mainly to rest and enjoy the sea and the hotel.

Unlike choosing an area with restaurants and a market, here it is worth giving more weight to what the hotel itself offers.

If you plan to spend many hours on the beach, at the pool and in the hotel grounds, an area like this can suit your style of holiday.

If, on the other hand, going out to restaurants and markets every evening matters to you, check in advance what there is outside the hotel and whether you will need transport.

Who is it for?

Couples, families and anyone looking for a quiet holiday focused on the hotel and the beach.

What to check?

Whether there are restaurants outside the hotel within walking distance, and whether you will need a taxi or a car to reach the places to go out.

Pak Weep - a relaxed holiday by the sea

Information from outside sources - we did not stay in this area.

Pak Weep is in the more northern part of the Khao Lak resort strip.

The area is known for quiet beaches and resorts, and it feels less built-up than the main areas to stay.

It is further from the places to go out, so it mainly suits anyone who wants to spend a lot of time at the hotel and on the beach.

Here it is worth choosing the hotel by the experience you want from it, and not only by how the rooms look.

If you plan to go out often to markets, restaurants and shops, take the distance and the transport options into account.

Who is it for?

Anyone looking for rest, a beach and a resort, who prefers quieter surroundings.

What to check?

What is around the hotel, and whether you can go out to eat outside the grounds without needing a car or a taxi.

Bang Sak - for getting away from the bustle

Information from outside sources - we did not stay in this area.

Bang Sak is another option for anyone looking for a relaxed holiday in the northern part of Khao Lak.

The area has a long beach, plenty of space and a fairly quiet atmosphere.

There are beach restaurants and places to stay, but it is further from Khao Lak's tourist centres.

If you prefer a holiday where most of the time goes to the sea, rest and the hotel, that distance may suit you.

On the other hand, if you like heading out every evening to a centre with restaurants, shops and markets, bear in mind that access is less convenient.

Who is it for?

Couples and families looking for a quiet holiday who prefer to spend a lot of time around the hotel.

What to check?

The transport options, the distance to restaurants and shops, and what there is to do in the evening.

The hotel we stayed at: Grandfather KhaoLak Resort

We stayed here in February 2025, in the Bang Niang area.

We chose to stay at Grandfather KhaoLak Resort during our visit to Khao Lak. The hotel is in the Bang Niang area, which we chose because it let us combine a relaxing holiday with the market, restaurants and a pleasant evening atmosphere.

Being in this area lets you enjoy the surroundings and not just the hotel itself, but it is important to check the exact distance from the hotel to the places where you want to spend your time.

How to choose a hotel in Khao Lak?

When you look at Khao Lak hotels, it is easy to focus on photos of the pool, the rooms and the beach.

But because the area stretches along a long strip of coast, there are a few more things we recommend checking before you book.

1. The exact location

First of all, check which area the hotel is in.

A hotel in Bang Niang or Nang Thong may suit anyone who wants to go out in the evening, while a hotel in one of the northern areas may suit a quiet holiday better.

But location matters within the same area too. Not every hotel is near the restaurants, the market or the beach.

2. Places to eat outside the hotel

If you like going out in the evening and choosing a restaurant, check what is within walking distance.

At a remote resort the options outside the hotel may be more limited, so take that into account at the choosing stage.

3. Access to the beach

Not every hotel listed as being in a beach area is actually right on the sea.

Check whether the hotel is on the beach itself, across the road, or far enough away that you need to walk or drive.

If you plan to spend a large part of the day on the beach, this can be one of the most important considerations.

4. Transport

It is important to check whether you will need a taxi or a car to reach the market, the restaurants and the attractions.

Sometimes a hotel that looks more attractive on price or facilities turns out to be less convenient, if every outing from it means a drive.

We would choose the area that suits the kind of holiday first, and only then compare the hotels in it.

How do you get around between the areas in Khao Lak?

In some parts of Khao Lak, such as Bang Niang and Bang La On, you can walk to restaurants and shops.

But Khao Lak is not one small tourist centre, and the distances between the beach areas can be large.

To move between the areas, get to the waterfalls or visit attractions further away, you usually need transport.

You can get around by taxi, private transfer or hire car.

So if you do not plan to use a car or taxis often, it is worth prioritising a hotel close to the places where you will want to spend your time.

How many nights should you stay in Khao Lak?

The length of your stay also affects which area to choose.

Two nights - a short stop

We stayed in Khao Lak for two nights.

A stay like this suits anyone who is fitting the area into a longer route and wants to enjoy the local atmosphere or go on one day trip.

With only two nights, it is especially worth choosing a location that suits your plans, so you do not waste a large part of your time travelling between areas.

Three to four nights - beaches and attractions

Three to four nights let you combine a beach holiday, a visit to the market, a day trip to the Similan Islands and a little time to rest.

If you plan to go on trips but also want to enjoy the hotel, this option gives you more flexibility.

Five nights or more - a relaxed holiday

A longer stay suits anyone who wants to spend a lot of time at the resort, enjoy the beaches and also fit in nature trips, waterfalls and attractions in the area.

On a holiday like this you can also consider the quieter areas to stay, where the hotel and the beach are a central part of the experience.

FAQ about where to stay in Khao Lak

Which area should you stay in on a first visit to Khao Lak?

If combining the beach with restaurants and markets matters to you, we would start by looking at hotels in Bang Niang and Nang Thong. If you prefer a quiet resort holiday, it is worth looking at Khuk Khak, Pak Weep and Bang Sak too.

Can you walk to Bang Niang Market from any hotel in Khao Lak?

No. Khao Lak stretches along a long strip of coast, and even within the Bang Niang area not every hotel is within an easy walk of the market.

Do you need to hire a car in Khao Lak?

Not necessarily. In some areas you can walk to restaurants and shops, and for longer journeys you can use a taxi or a private transfer. If you plan to travel a lot between areas and attractions, a hire car is another option.

Which area suits a quiet holiday?

Khuk Khak, Pak Weep and Bang Sak are the areas to look at if you want long beaches, resorts and a more relaxed atmosphere. It is important to check what services there are around the hotel.

Which is better - a hotel near restaurants or a secluded resort?

It depends on the kind of holiday you want. If you like going out every evening, choose an area with restaurants and markets. If you prefer to spend most of your time at the pool and on the beach, a remote resort can suit you too.

Our bottom line

In Khao Lak you can have very different holidays, even though all the hotels are listed under the same destination name.

We chose to stay in Bang Niang and enjoyed being able to combine a relaxed atmosphere with the market and going out in the evening. If you are looking for a quieter holiday, it is worth looking at the beaches and resorts in the north too.

Before booking a hotel in Khao Lak, we would first check its surroundings, its access to the beach and the options for food and transport.

Sometimes the difference between an easy holiday and one that involves a lot of driving is simply where the hotel is.
