Staying on Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok - How to Book the Floating Bungalows, What It Costs and What Really Awaits You

Some places in Thailand you visit for the view, and at others the experience goes far beyond what you see in the photos. Cheow Lan Lake, in the heart of the Khao Sok area, is one of them.

Updated: October 2026·By Michelle Loren

Imagine waking up in a hut floating on the water, opening the door and seeing a vast turquoise lake in front of you, ringed by dramatic limestone cliffs and green jungle. No roads, no cars, and in many places no steady phone signal either. Just water, mountains and a quiet that is hard to find anywhere else.

In February 2025 we spent three days in the Khao Sok area: one night on the lake itself, on an organised trip that included a night in a floating hut, a boat trip, meals and other activities, followed by two nights in the village area.

The night on the lake was one of the most special experiences of our trip to Thailand. But we also discovered something important: booking one of the Khao Sok floating bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake is not like booking an ordinary hotel. You need to understand where the places to stay are, how you get to them, what the price includes and what level of comfort you actually get.

In this guide we explain how to plan a stay on the lake, the difference between a basic hut and a luxury resort, whether to book an organised package or arrange your own stay, and what we learned from our own experience.

01Where is Cheow Lan Lake and what makes it special?

Cheow Lan Lake, also known as Ratchaprapha Lake, is a man-made lake created when Ratchaprapha Dam was built in the 1980s.

Over the years the area has become one of the most impressive natural landscapes in southern Thailand: greenish water, limestone cliffs towering over the lake, hidden coves and tropical forest that reaches almost to the waterline.

What makes the lake special is not just the scenery, but the chance to actually sleep on it.

The places to stay are not built along an ordinary road. Most of them are on the water, in different parts of the lake, and you reach them by boat.

That is why booking a stay on the lake takes a little more planning than booking a hotel on Koh Samui, in Phuket or even in Khao Sok Village.

02How do you book a stay on Cheow Lan Lake?

There are two main ways to book a stay on the lake: an organised package that includes a night on the lake, or booking a floating resort separately.

Option one: an organised tour package with a night on the lake

This is the option we chose.

Lake packages usually combine several services: a boat to the accommodation, the stay itself, meals and nature activities. Some also include transport from the Khao Sok area or other destinations.

The big advantage is simplicity. You do not need to arrange a boat, a hotel, meals and a guide separately. You arrive at the agreed pick-up point and carry on from there according to the trip plan.

Our experience included a boat trip on the lake, a night in a floating hut, meals, time for kayaking and group activities on the way back too.

Who do we recommend this option to?

Anyone coming to the lake for the first time, travellers who do not want to deal with logistics, and anyone who wants to combine the stay with activities and meeting other travellers.

Still, remember that not every package is the same. There are significant differences between routes, room types, group size and what is included in the price.

Option two: booking a floating resort independently

You can also choose a specific place to stay and book your stay through it.

This option especially suits anyone looking for a higher standard of accommodation, privacy, a particular room or a longer stay.

But there is a detail that is easy to miss here: the room price does not necessarily include everything you need to get there.

Before you pay, find out:

  • Is the boat from the pier to the resort included in the price?
  • Are there fixed boat departure times?
  • Are meals included?
  • Are activities such as kayaking or a guided boat trip included?
  • Do you need to pay the national park entrance fee separately?
  • Is there a transfer service from Khao Sok Village or another destination?

A place that looks cheaper when you book may turn out to be more expensive once you add all the services you need.

03Where can you book?

You can search for places to stay on the lake through booking sites such as Agoda and Booking, but not all the floating accommodation is clearly listed on them.

In some cases they are easier to find when you search for the names of the lake and the dam, not just the name Khao Sok.

Try these search phrases:

  • Cheow Lan Lake floating resort
  • Chiew Larn Lake accommodation
  • Ratchaprapha Lake floating bungalow
  • Khao Sok overnight lake tour

The spelling of the lake's name also varies a little between sites, so try a few versions.

Another option is to book directly through the accommodation's own website or through a local tour operator.

We recommend comparing not only the final price but also the list of services it includes and the cancellation terms.

04A simple hut or a luxury resort - what is the difference?

One of the things to understand is that the term floating resort can describe completely different places to stay.

Basic floating huts

These are usually the simplest options.

Some have a small room, a bed, a fan and very basic conditions. Toilets may be shared or private, depending on the place.

The advantage is the price and the closeness to nature. The drawback is the level of comfort, which will not necessarily suit everyone.

Upgraded huts with private bathrooms

This is the option closest to our own experience.

We stayed in a Superior room, with a bed, a private bathroom and a small deck that opened straight onto the water.

It was not a luxury hotel experience, but for us it had exactly what we needed to enjoy the lake.

One thing worth knowing is that our room had no electricity during the night. It did not stop us enjoying the stay, but it is definitely important to come prepared for it.

Upmarket floating resorts

If you prefer more pampering accommodation, you can look for resorts with spacious rooms, careful design, upgraded facilities and sometimes even private pools.

One of the best-known options on the lake is 500 Rai Floating Resort, which offers a more luxurious stay.

We did not stay there ourselves, so we cannot give a personal review, but it is definitely a place worth knowing about when comparing places to stay on the lake.

The choice depends on your budget and the kind of experience you are after. If you mainly want to disconnect and experience nature, you can enjoy a simple hut a great deal. If you are looking for a romantic, pampering holiday, you may prefer a higher standard of accommodation.

05How much does it cost to stay on Cheow Lan Lake?

There is no single price for staying on the lake.

The cost varies with the room standard, the season, the number of people, the number of nights and what is included.

In general, a basic package will be cheaper than one with an upgraded room, and luxury floating hotels can cost considerably more.

It is especially important to check whether the price is per person or per room, and whether it is accommodation only or a full package.

Our recommendation: before you compare prices, make sure you are comparing the same product. A night in a room only and a night that includes a boat trip, three meals, a guide and activities are not really the same thing.

We prefer not to give a single price here that could be misleading, because the gaps between the options are large and prices change. Check a current price for your dates.

06Our experience: one night on the water

We started our visit to Khao Sok with a trip that included a night on the lake, and only afterwards moved on to two nights in the village area.

Even during the boat trip we realised this was a completely different experience from staying in the village. The scenery changes as you go further in: huge limestone cliffs, green coves and water that looks almost unreal.

When we reached the accommodation, we were given a floating room with a small deck over the water.

What we loved most was being right on the lake. You do not have to leave the hotel to reach the view - it is literally outside your door.

During our stay we enjoyed a boat trip, Thai meals and the chance to go out in kayaks and explore the surroundings at our own pace.

The room itself was relatively basic, and the power cut at night was part of the arrangement. But that very simplicity let us enjoy the experience without many distractions.

This is one of those places where we would not judge the quality of the stay by the room alone. On Cheow Lan Lake, the reason to come is first and foremost the place itself.

07What is there to do on the lake besides sleep?

The stay is only part of the experience.

Boat trips between the limestone cliffs

The boat trip is one of the main experiences on the lake. The boats pass between tall cliffs, coves and small stretches of shore, and the scenery changes along the way.

Kayaking

At some places to stay you can use kayaks and paddle around the area near the huts.

For us this is one of the most beautiful ways to experience the lake: no engine noise, close to the water and at a slow pace.

Nature trips and guided activities

Some packages also include jungle walks, cave visits or boat trips to look for wildlife.

Activities vary with the season, the weather and the tour operator, so check in advance what your specific package includes.

08Two special stops on the way back from the lake

One of the lovely things about our trip was that the experience did not end the moment we stepped off the boat.

On 8 February 2025, on the way back from Cheow Lan Lake, we stopped at two places in the Ratchaprapha Dam area. They were not the main attractions of the trip, but they gave it a completely different character.

Uncle Khiao Passion Fruit Garden - a small farm that became a group experience

The first stop was a small passion fruit farm in the Ban Ta Khun area, surrounded by greenery and beautiful mountain scenery.

There was a large heart-shaped wooden seating area with an open view of the mountains and the valley. Of course we stopped for photos, but the photos were only a small part of the experience.

The activity actually began with group ice-breaker games. We laughed, loosened up and started getting to know the people we were travelling with better.

Afterwards they brought us into the farm's own work and showed us what they do there in a hands-on, fun way.

We no longer remember exactly which farming process they demonstrated, but we remember the atmosphere well: we all took part, had fun and felt the group really come together.

It was a lovely experience, mainly because it was so unexpected. We had come on the trip for the lake and the scenery, and we also got an enjoyable human encounter.

The farm is known for growing passion fruit and for the drinks made from it. It is close to the Ratchaprapha Dam viewpoint.

Good to know: the ice-breaker games and the activity we took part in were part of our organised trip. That does not mean everyone who visits the farm independently gets the same activity.

Wangwa Hope Restaurant - a meal stop on the way

After the farm we went on to Wangwa Hope Restaurant, a restaurant in the Ban Ta Khun area.

There we stopped for pad thai, served with fresh bean sprouts, vegetables and lime on the side.

The restaurant serves Thai dishes alongside other options, and makes a good stop on the way to or from the pier.

It was a pleasant way to round off the lake part of the trip before we moved on.

09How do you get to Cheow Lan Lake?

One of the most common mistakes when planning the trip is treating Khao Sok Village and the lake as if they were in the same place.

In fact, they are two separate areas.

Khao Sok Village is near the main entrance to the national park, and has guesthouses, hotels, restaurants and tour agencies.

Boat trips on the lake, on the other hand, leave from the Ratchaprapha Dam area, a considerable drive from the village.

If you are booking a lake package, check where the transfer leaves from. Some operators pick up travellers from the village, while others require you to make your own way to the pier.

If you are coming from Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak or Surat Thani, plan the journey according to the exact departure point.

Do not assume that any transfer going to Khao Sok will also take you to the lake pier.

10What should you pack for a night on the lake?

Even if you are only staying one night, there are a few things worth bringing:

  • Swimwear and light clothes to change into.
  • Comfortable shoes or sandals suitable for getting into a boat.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Sunscreen and a hat.
  • A power bank for your phone, especially if electricity is limited.
  • A waterproof bag for your phone and sensitive gear.
  • Medication and personal items you would not want to be without.

We also recommend finding out whether you can leave your big suitcase at your previous hotel or with the tour operator and come to the lake with just a small bag.

That makes getting into the boat and managing in the hut much easier.

11Should you stay overnight on the lake or just do a day trip?

You can also visit the lake on a day trip, which is a good solution if you are short on time.

But in our view, staying overnight is a significant part of the experience.

On a day trip you see the scenery, sail between the cliffs and go back to land. When you stay on the lake, there is time to enjoy the place without constantly being on the move.

You can sit facing the water, go out in a kayak and experience the atmosphere at times when some of the day-trippers have already left.

If you can set aside one night for the lake, we recommend doing so.

12How many nights should you stay on the lake?

For most travellers, one night is a good start.

That way you can experience the boat trip, sleep on the water and enjoy the activities without giving too much of your trip to one destination.

Two nights can suit anyone looking for a particularly relaxing break who loves nature and wants more time to enjoy the resort and the lake itself.

In our case, splitting it into one night on the lake and two nights in the village area worked very well.

The village offered a completely different experience: restaurants, cafés, a special atmosphere and places to go out in the evening. The lake was the quieter, more secluded part of the trip.

If you are unsure how to divide your days, see our guide Where to stay in Khao Sok - in the village, the jungle or on the lake?

13Who is a stay on the lake right for - and who less so?

We think staying on the lake especially suits couples, nature lovers, travellers looking for an extraordinary experience and anyone willing to give up a little urban comfort for scenery and atmosphere.

On the other hand, anyone who needs constant electricity, reliable internet, a choice of restaurants or the freedom to go out and wander around at any hour should choose their accommodation carefully.

Anyone who is very sensitive to basic conditions should also check the room type carefully and not rely only on the beautiful photos of the lake.

14So would we recommend staying on Cheow Lan Lake?

Definitely.

It was one of our most special experiences in Khao Sok, and not just because of the stunning scenery.

We loved the boat trip, the hut that literally touches the water, the time in the kayaks and the feeling of being somewhere different from anything we knew in Thailand.

We also loved the social side of the trip: the people we met, the shared activities and the stop at the farm on the way back, which became a surprising, bonding experience.

If we were planning our visit to Khao Sok again, we would still combine the village and the lake and not give up either of them.

Our most important advice is to choose the kind of experience you want first, and only then the place to stay. A basic hut as part of a group tour and a luxury resort with pampering facilities can both be wonderful - but they offer completely different holidays.

And anyone coming to Khao Sok for the nature, the scenery and the experience of sleeping right on the water will find something hard to forget on Cheow Lan Lake.
