Where to Stay in Khao Sok: the Village, the Jungle or Cheow Lan Lake

When planning a trip to Khao Sok, one of the most important questions is where to stay. On the face of it, the answer is simple: find a hotel near the national park and book. But in practice, your choice of accommodation shapes your whole experience.

Updated: October 2026·By Michelle Loren

You can wake up in a bungalow surrounded by tropical greenery, sleep in a designer glamping tent among the trees, choose a small hotel within walking distance of the village restaurants, or spend a night in a hut floating on a lake ringed by huge limestone cliffs.

All of these are marketed as places to stay in Khao Sok, but they do not offer the same holiday.

On our trip to Thailand in February 2025 we chose to combine two nights near the national park and one night on Cheow Lan Lake. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions of the trip. The combination let us experience both the jungle and the lake, without giving up either.

So where to stay in Khao Sok, how many nights to give each area, and what should you know before you book?

01First, understand Khao Sok's geography

The most common mistake is to think that all the hotels listed under the name Khao Sok are close to each other.

In fact, it helps to distinguish between two main areas to stay in.

The Khao Sok Village area is near the main entrance to the national park. This is where much of the accommodation, restaurants, cafés and tour agencies are concentrated. Around it there are also more secluded places surrounded by jungle, which give you the feeling of sleeping in the heart of nature.

The Cheow Lan Lake area is a drive away from the village. To reach the floating accommodation you usually need to drive to the pier by Ratchaprapha Dam and continue by boat from there.

The distance between the village and the pier is in the region of 60-70 kilometres, depending on your starting point and route.

So do not book a hotel on the lake thinking you can simply walk from it to a restaurant in the village, or the other way round.

02Staying in Khao Sok Village - the convenient, flexible choice

If you want to enjoy Khao Sok's nature without feeling cut off, the village area is an excellent base.

It is not a big or busy town, but a relatively small tourist area with places to stay, restaurants, cafés, shops and tour services.

The big advantage is convenience. You can go out to eat in the evening, book an activity for the next day and get around without depending on the hotel for every meal and every ride.

The accommodation here is varied: from simple budget rooms to boutique hotels and pleasant bungalows with balconies facing the greenery.

Who would we recommend the village to?

Travellers coming to Khao Sok for the first time, anyone planning to go out on trails or activities in the national park, and anyone who wants the option of walking out to a restaurant in the evening without booking a transfer.

It is also a good choice for travellers on a limited budget, as there is a relatively wide range of places to stay.

The drawback is that not every hotel in the village gives you the same feeling of seclusion you imagine when you think of jungle in Thailand. Some places are right by the road, while others are surrounded by trees and much quieter.

So check the exact location and the photos of the hotel's surroundings, not just of the room.

For us this is one of the most special options in Khao Sok.

Around the national park and the village there are places to stay that offer a more intimate experience: wooden cabins among the trees, designer tents, tropical gardens and sometimes balconies overlooking the greenery.

You do not need to sleep in basic conditions to enjoy the jungle. Some places combine careful design, comfortable beds and private bathrooms with a feeling of nature all around.

Our experience at Cosy Garden Khao Sok

During our visit we stayed at Cosy Garden Khao Sok, a glamping site with a romantic atmosphere and a tropical garden.

What we especially loved was the combination of nature and the pleasant feeling of a small, intimate place to stay.

Breakfast in the garden was part of the magic. We did not need a huge pool or a lavish resort to enjoy the place. The greenery, the quiet and the atmosphere were enough.

That is exactly why we think it is worth giving some thought to staying near the national park too, rather than seeing it only as a stopover before the lake.

What should you check with glamping?

The word glamping can describe very different kinds of accommodation.

There are spacious, air-conditioned tents with a private bathroom, and there are simpler places where some facilities are shared or the tent is not fully sealed against noise and insects.

Check whether there is air conditioning, what kind of bathroom it has, how much privacy there is between units and how you get to restaurants or pick-up points for trips.

The distance from the village matters too. A place that looks close on the map may be less convenient to reach on foot, especially in the dark or in the rain.

Who is it for? Mainly couples, nature lovers and anyone who wants the accommodation itself to be part of the experience, not just somewhere to come back to at the end of the day.

04Staying on Cheow Lan Lake - the experience you cannot get in the village

If staying in the village is a base for trips, staying on the lake is an experience in itself.

Cheow Lan Lake is surrounded by huge limestone mountains and dense rainforest. Some of the accommodation is built right on the water, and the way to reach it is by boat.

There is no street of restaurants to wander out to in the evening, and none of the freedom of movement of an ordinary hotel. In most cases, meals and activities are run by the place you are staying at or the package you booked.

But that very disconnection is a big part of the magic.

Our night on the lake

We did the night on the lake at the start of our visit, as part of a two-day, one-night package, and then moved on to two nights near the national park.

We slept in a relatively simple room, with a bed, a private bathroom and a small deck that opened straight onto the water.

The experience was completely different from staying in the jungle.

Instead of sitting in a garden surrounded by trees, we found ourselves kayaking between the mountains, enjoying the quiet and the vast scenery of the lake.

Kayaks by the floating huts

There were none of the comforts of a luxury hotel, but we did not feel we were missing them either.

What you should know is that conditions in the floating huts vary a great deal. Where we stayed there was no electricity in the room during the night, so find out in advance what hours the power is on and whether there is air conditioning.

You do not have to sleep in a simple hut

The lake also has higher-end resorts, with spacious rooms, private decks and upgraded facilities.

One option worth knowing about is 500 Rai Floating Resort, which offers a more luxurious stay.

We did not stay there ourselves, so we are not presenting it as a recommendation from personal experience, but it may suit anyone looking for a pampering holiday on the lake rather than a basic group tour package.

For details on the accommodation options, visit the official 500 Rai website.

Important: booking a room on the lake does not always include the boat to get there, meals or the park entrance fee.

That is exactly why we have written a separate guide explaining how to book a stay on Cheow Lan Lake, the difference between an organised package and booking independently, and which details to check before you pay.

05How many nights should you spend in Khao Sok?

The length of your stay is one of the things that most affects your choice of accommodation.

We recommend not trying to do all of Khao Sok in one day, especially if you are coming from another destination in southern Thailand.

One night in Khao Sok

If you only have one night, we would choose by the experience you want most.

If the dream is to wake up in a floating hut facing the limestone cliffs, look into an overnight lake package and make sure it fits your arrival and departure times.

If you are arriving late or want to fit in an activity around the village too, it is sometimes better to sleep on land and not cram in transfers.

Either way, one night will not let you get to know both areas at a relaxed pace.

Two nights in Khao Sok

Now you can combine.

A first night in the village area or the jungle and a second night on the lake can give you a taste of both kinds of stay.

But it is important to coordinate the move between them in advance. Lake packages leave at set times, so make sure your check-out time, pick-up and arrival at the pier fit your route.

If you prefer slow travel and do not like changing accommodation every day, you can also stay two nights in the village area and take a day trip to the lake. That is the more convenient option, but it is no substitute for the experience of sleeping on the water.

Three nights in Khao Sok - the combination we chose

Two nights near the national park and one night on the lake was a very successful split for us.

We had time to experience the lake and also enjoy staying in the jungle and the atmosphere of the area, without feeling we had to choose just one of them.

If you are coming to Khao Sok for the first time and have three nights, this is also the split we would suggest considering.

Four nights or more

If you have time and love nature, you can slow the pace down.

Two nights near the national park and two nights on the lake give you more free time, especially if you choose a comfortable floating resort and want to enjoy staying there, not just the organised activities.

But we would not add nights just to fill the itinerary. Choose them according to the activities that interest you and the pace at which you like to travel.

06How to plan the transfers between places to stay

One of the mistakes you can make in Khao Sok is to book the hotels first and only then think about transport.

Especially when you include a night on the lake, plan the transfers in advance.

Usually, we would build the route like this:

Day one: arrive in the Khao Sok Village area, settle into the hotel and have time to enjoy the surroundings.

Day two: an activity in the national park or a more relaxed day, depending on your preferences.

Day three: head out to the lake on a package or a pre-arranged transfer, take the boat trip and sleep in a floating hut.

Day four: finish the lake activities and continue to your next destination.

The advantage of a route like this is that you do not necessarily need to go back to the village after the night on the lake, if you can arrange onward travel from where the package ends.

Check this with the operator before booking, especially if you are continuing to Khao Lak, Phuket, Krabi or the Surat Thani area.

What do you do with your luggage?

With some lake packages you can leave your big suitcases with the operator and take a small bag for the night.

This is very convenient, as you reach the huts by boat.

But the service is not necessarily included with every booking. Check in advance where your luggage is kept, when you get it back and whether the end point is the same as the starting point.

07Where to stay in Khao Sok by travel style

Travel style What we would consider
A couple looking for a romantic break Jungle glamping + a night on the lake
Budget travellers A guesthouse in the village + a basic lake package
Nature and activity lovers Two nights near the national park + a night on the lake
A luxury holiday A boutique hotel in the jungle + a luxury floating resort
A family with children A comfortable hotel on land + checking whether the lake stay suits the children's ages
Travellers short on time Choose one main experience and plan around it

08Where do you book a hotel in Khao Sok?

Accommodation in the village and jungle area can usually be booked through ordinary booking sites such as Agoda and Booking, or directly with the property.

But pay attention to the area name that appears in the results.

A search for Khao Sok may also show places that are a drive away from the national park entrance, so check the location on the map rather than relying on the hotel's name.

On the lake the process is a little different. Some places are sold as packages that include a boat trip, meals and activities, while others can be booked independently.

Our recommendation is to compare the total cost, including transport and transfers, not just the price shown for a room per night.

If you are booking a stay on the lake, also find out whether you can continue straight to your next destination at the end of the package, instead of going back to where you stayed before.

09Frequently asked questions about where to stay in Khao Sok

Is it better to stay in Khao Sok Village or on the lake?

If you have time, we would combine both. The village is more convenient as a base for trips and restaurants, while the lake offers a special kind of stay that is hard to find anywhere else.

Do you need a car to stay in Khao Sok?

No. You can reach the area by shuttle and other transport, and book activities with pick-up. However, accommodation far from the village may require extra transfers, so check the location in advance.

Does staying in the jungle mean basic conditions?

Not at all. Khao Sok has stylish, very comfortable places to stay, including glamping with a private bathroom and air conditioning. On the other hand, not every place offers the same conditions.

Can you do a day trip to the lake without staying overnight?

Yes. It is a good option if you prefer to stay in one hotel. But sleeping on the lake gives you a different experience, especially if you want to enjoy the quiet and time on the water.

Should you book in advance?

If you want a particular place, a special room or a floating resort, we would book in advance. Especially for a stay on the lake, where the number of options is limited and getting there needs coordinating.

Should you book all your nights at the same hotel?

Only if you prefer to stay in the village area and take trips from there. If you want to sleep on the lake, you will usually need to add a second place to stay.

10So where do we recommend staying in Khao Sok?

If we went back to Khao Sok, we would again choose to combine the jungle and the lake.

We love being able to wake up in a tropical garden, go out to a lovely breakfast and feel the atmosphere of the area. But we would not give up the night on Cheow Lan Lake, which was one of the most special experiences of our trip.

The most important thing is to understand that you do not have to choose between a beautiful hotel and an experience in nature. In Khao Sok you can have both, if you plan how to split your nights well.

Our recommendation for first-timers is to spend three nights: two in the village or jungle area, and one on the lake. That split gives you enough time to enjoy both areas without turning the visit into a race.

And if you have less time? Choose the experience that draws you most. Khao Sok is a place to enjoy, not just to tick off a list.
