Zen Beach, Koh Phangan - the beach of sunsets and drum circles

In the morning it is a quiet, almost deserted beach. Towards sunset it becomes a meeting point for travellers, musicians and yoga practitioners.

Updated: October 2026·By Michelle Loren

Zen Beach is one of Koh Phangan's more unusual beaches, not so much because of the sand or the water, but because of what happens there towards sunset. In the morning it can look like a small, quiet beach, almost deserted. In the late afternoon and evening it becomes a meeting point for travellers, musicians, yoga practitioners and people who come to enjoy the sunset and the island's free-spirited atmosphere.

The beach, also known as Ao Niad, is in the Srithanu area on the west coast of Koh Phangan. It is associated with the area's international community, with sunset gatherings, music, drumming, dancing and activities that happen spontaneously on the sand.

But it is important to know when to go. An early morning visit can be a completely different experience from the one that made Zen Beach Koh Phangan's best-known sunset spot.

Where is Zen Beach and what makes it special?

Zen Beach is on the west coast of Koh Phangan, in the Srithanu area, north of Thong Sala.

It is a fairly small beach, with a strip of pale sand, shallow water and an open view over the Gulf of Thailand. From the beach you can see small islands on the horizon, and in the late afternoon the sun sets over the sea.

Unlike the Koh Phangan beaches known for luxury hotels, lots of restaurants or water sports, Zen Beach is famous mainly for the social atmosphere that has grown up around it.

Its closeness to Srithanu, an area that draws yoga practitioners, meditators, movement workshop participants and travellers staying on the island for long periods, has also shaped the character of the gatherings on the beach.

In the evening you will find people arriving with musical instruments, groups sitting on the sand, dancing and informal gatherings.

It is not an organised party in the Full Moon style, but something entirely different, centred on the sunset and on people coming together.

Zen Beach in the morning - quiet and almost empty

We visited Zen Beach early in the morning on 21 February 2025.

The sky was overcast, the beach was almost empty and the atmosphere was very quiet.

The strip of pale sand stretched along the shallow water, with the small islands visible on the horizon opposite.

It looked natural and pleasant, but there was nothing particular going on that justified staying long.

The bar and kiosk on the beach

On the beach there was a small bar-kiosk, with a menu board, a few wooden tables and a shaded seating area.

During our visit the coffee service was very limited, and the place did not offer a proper breakfast experience.

This was one of the disappointments of the visit: the beach itself was too quiet for anyone looking for something going on, and the option of sitting down for a coffee was limited too.

Is it worth going in the morning?

If you are looking for a quiet place to sit by the sea, a morning visit may suit you.

But if you are coming because of Zen Beach's reputation as a lively meeting place, with music and a special atmosphere, you may be disappointed.

The beach does not change only because of the beautiful sunset light. In the evening its social character changes too, and that is a central part of the reason to go.

So if you only have time for one visit, it is better to save it for the late afternoon.

Sunset at Zen Beach - the main reason to go

Zen Beach faces west, towards the Gulf of Thailand, which makes it one of the best-known places in the Srithanu area to watch the sunset.

Towards the end of the day, travellers and local residents start arriving at the beach. Some come to sit facing the sea, others bring instruments, and some join in the movement and dance activities on the sand.

The atmosphere is nothing like a club or a commercial beach party.

There is no need to book a place, buy a ticket or dress in any particular way. You can sit on the sand, listen to the music, watch the sunset or join whatever is developing on the beach.

What happens on the beach towards sunset?

The character of the gatherings changes from day to day, depending on who turns up.

Activities associated with Zen Beach include:

  • Free drumming and percussion.
  • Spontaneous dancing on the sand.
  • Yoga and Acro Yoga practice.
  • Social gatherings of travellers and residents.
  • Occasional fire shows.

Not every activity happens every evening. Sometimes the gathering is big and lively, and on other days it is calmer and smaller.

The beach does not run to an organised entertainment programme, and that is part of its character.

What time should you arrive?

We recommend arriving at around 17:00-17:30, depending on the time of sunset in that season.

That way you can find a comfortable spot on the sand, enjoy the afternoon light and watch the atmosphere build gradually.

If you arrive right at sunset you may find the beach busier, especially on Fridays and in peak tourist periods.

The Zen Beach Drum Circle

One of the activities most closely associated with Zen Beach is the Drum Circle.

It is an informal musical gathering where people bring drums and percussion instruments, sit together and play facing the sea.

Unlike a concert where the audience watches musicians on a stage, here the line between participants and spectators is not always clear.

You can come just to listen, dance along to the music or join in with an instrument.

When does the drum circle take place?

Fridays are one of the main days for gatherings on the beach.

Local event listings for October 2026 showed Sunset Drum Circle sessions on Fridays, usually from 17:30 until after sunset.

That said, spontaneous drumming and music sessions also happen on other evenings, especially at times when there is a lot going on in the area.

Because these are community gatherings rather than a commercial event with a fixed programme, it is worth checking what is planned close to your visit.

Do you have to pay?

Taking part in the open drumming sessions is free.

You do not need to buy a ticket to come to the beach or watch the gathering.

You can bring a mat, a towel or something to drink and sit on the sand.

Do you have to join in?

Not at all.

You can simply sit facing the sea and watch what is going on.

If you like music, dancing and a relaxed social atmosphere, this can be one of the most interesting experiences on Koh Phangan.

If you prefer complete quiet, the busy evening hours will suit you less.

Is Zen Beach good for swimming?

Zen Beach is not necessarily the first choice if you are looking for a perfect swimming beach.

The water here is fairly shallow, and at low tide the sea can recede and expose large stretches of the seabed.

There may be rocks and sea urchins in the water and in the rocky areas, so it is important to check the bottom before going in.

How do the tides affect the beach?

At low tide the waterline moves further out, and sometimes you have to walk quite a long way to reach water deep enough for swimming.

At high tide, on the other hand, the strip of open sand can be narrower.

This also affects the sunset experience, because the amount of space for sitting on the sand changes.

Should you bring water shoes?

Yes, especially if you are planning to go in the water.

Water shoes can help when walking over rocky areas and sharp patches, although they do not guarantee protection from sea urchins.

It is important not to step on marine life or coral, and to check sea conditions before swimming.

Is it a family beach?

You can visit Zen Beach with children too, especially during the day, when the atmosphere is quieter.

However, the beach does not have the extensive facilities of the resort beaches, and the shallow water is not necessarily suitable for swimming at all hours.

In the evening, bear in mind the music, the social gatherings and the free-spirited character of the place.

The free-spirited atmosphere of Zen Beach - what you should know

Zen Beach is one of the places associated with the alternative character of the Srithanu area.

The local community includes yoga practitioners, musicians, travellers staying on the island for long periods and people who come for social and spiritual activities.

The atmosphere is informal, and some visitors practise yoga, meditation or movement on the sand.

Nude bathing is also sometimes reported on the more remote parts of the beach.

It is worth knowing this in advance, especially for families or anyone who prefers a beach with a more conservative atmosphere.

Nudity is not necessarily a feature of the whole beach or of all hours, and it should not be seen as an official activity of the place.

How to get to Zen Beach

Zen Beach is in the Srithanu area, on the west coast of Koh Phangan, about 6 km from Thong Sala.

You can get to the area by hire car, scooter or local taxi.

An access road leads from the main road towards the beach, ending at a parking area from which you continue on foot for a short walk to the sand.

Getting there by car or scooter

If you are planning to explore west Koh Phangan, it is easy to combine Zen Beach with other places in and around Srithanu.

Towards sunset the parking area can get busier, especially on Fridays.

It is worth arriving a little before the peak time and allowing for the fact that leaving the area after sunset may also be slower.

Getting there by taxi

You can get there by local taxi, but it is worth arranging your return journey in advance as well.

Taxis do not necessarily wait at the beach itself, and in the evening you may need to head back towards the main road to find transport.

Can you walk from Srithanu?

It depends on exactly where you are staying.

Some places to stay in Srithanu are within walking distance of the beach, while others are further away.

It is worth checking the walking route and the state of the path in advance, especially if you are planning to walk back after sunset.

What is there to eat and drink at Zen Beach?

Food and drink options on the beach are fairly limited compared with more developed beaches on Koh Phangan.

When we visited in February 2025 there was a kiosk with a menu board and shaded wooden tables, but in the morning the service was very limited.

So if you are planning to come early, do not count on the beach for a full breakfast.

In the late afternoon and evening you can combine your visit with a drink on the beach, depending on which businesses are open that day.

If you want a proper meal, you will find more options in the Srithanu area.

Flamingo Beach - another beach to combine with your visit

One of the advantages of visiting Zen Beach is that you can carry on along the shore towards Flamingo Beach.

This is another beach in the Srithanu area, with a different atmosphere and a restaurant facing the sea.

Walking between the beaches lets you take in several spots on the same visit without needing another ride, when conditions allow you to get across.

What is the difference between Zen Beach and Flamingo Beach?

Zen Beach is known mainly for its sunsets, drum circles and social atmosphere.

Flamingo Beach offers a different way to spend time, with the focus on sitting at a restaurant facing the sea.

At Flamingo Beach we found a good restaurant with tasty food at reasonable prices, and it was one of the most beautiful beaches in the area in terms of the overall experience.

If you come to Srithanu during the day and find Zen Beach too quiet, you can combine the two and spend some time at Flamingo Beach as well.

It is important to check the tides and whether you can get across along the shore.

When is the best time to visit Zen Beach?

Time of visit What to expect on the beach Who it suits
Morning A quiet beach, few visitors and limited services Anyone looking for peace and quiet
Midday A natural beach and a relaxed atmosphere Sitting by the sea
Late afternoon Visitors start arriving ahead of sunset The recommended time to arrive
Sunset Social gatherings, music and a lively atmosphere The experience the beach is known for
Friday towards sunset The well-known drum circle, depending on local activity Music and dance lovers

What to know before you go

Time of visit: come in the late afternoon if you want to experience Zen Beach's famous atmosphere. A morning visit is a different and much quieter experience.

Drum circles: Friday is the main day, but spontaneous gatherings also happen on other evenings. Nothing is guaranteed on any given day.

Entry: access to the beach is free, and the open drumming sessions do not require a ticket.

Tides: the water is shallow, and at low tide the sea can recede a considerable distance.

Swimming: watch out for rocks and sea urchins, and do not assume every part of the beach offers easy access to the water.

Food and drink: services on the beach are limited. For a full meal, consider the restaurants in Srithanu or at Flamingo Beach.

Parking: at sunset and on Fridays the beach access area can get congested.

The vibe: the atmosphere is free and informal, and there may be nudity on part of the beach.

Is Zen Beach worth visiting?

Zen Beach is a beach where the experience depends very much on the time you arrive.

In the morning it can look fairly ordinary: an almost empty beach, shallow water and a small kiosk. If you arrive at that time expecting a lively place to hang out, you may be disappointed.

But that is also why it is not fair to judge the beach only by how it looks during the day.

What made Zen Beach one of the best-known places on Koh Phangan is the atmosphere that builds towards sunset - people gathering on the sand, live music, dancing and social gatherings facing the sea.

If you love the free-spirited, community side of Koh Phangan, especially in the Srithanu area, it is an interesting place to get to know.

Our recommendation is to come in the late afternoon, leave time to sit facing the sea and check whether there is a drumming session that evening.

You can also combine the visit with Flamingo Beach and with the restaurants and cafés of Srithanu.
