Bottle Beach, Koh Phangan - the secluded beach where the journey is part of the experience
How do you get to Bottle Beach, what makes it special, where can you eat, can you stay overnight and what should you know about the hiking trail over the hills? Our guide to this special beach in the north of Koh Phangan.

Koh Phangan is one of the most varied islands in Thailand. It has lively beaches with restaurants and bars, bays with pampering hotels, small fishing villages and also secluded beaches where getting there is part of the adventure.

Bottle Beach is exactly one of those beaches.
The beach, also called Haad Khuat, is in the north of Koh Phangan, in a beautiful bay surrounded by green hills and tropical vegetation. There is no easy access by ordinary road, so most visitors arrive by longtail boat from the fishing village of Chaloklum, or on hiking trails over the hills.
During our trip to Koh Phangan in 2025 we came to Bottle Beach for a few hours. We came on our own, took a longtail boat from Chaloklum, ate at one of the local restaurants and enjoyed the atmosphere on the beach.
What surprised us was that despite Bottle Beach's reputation as a secluded beach, there were quite a few visitors. The atmosphere was happy and lively, and yet it kept a sense of privacy and calm.
And what do we remember most? Not only the beach itself, but also the beautiful boat ride along the north coast of Koh Phangan and the interesting conversation with travellers we met on the way back.
What makes Bottle Beach special?
Bottle Beach sits in a bay surrounded by green hills, in the northern part of Koh Phangan. The strip of pale sand, the sea and the tropical vegetation that reaches almost to the beach make for a beautiful view.

What sets it apart from other beaches on Koh Phangan is mainly its location and how you get there.
Unlike beaches you can easily reach by scooter or car, here you need to take a boat, hike over the hills or use a suitable off-road transfer.
This relative isolation shapes the atmosphere.
There is no long promenade, no shopping street and no wealth of shops. Instead there is a strip of sand, a few restaurants and fairly simple places to stay, and the green hills surrounding the bay.
But we want to be precise about the word "secluded".
When we visited the beach there were quite a lot of people around us. Some were in the sea, others were sitting in the restaurants, and the atmosphere was sociable and pleasant.
Even so, we did not feel the bustle you find in more developed tourist areas.
Bottle Beach does not have to be empty to feel like a refuge.
For us, it is precisely this mix of a happy atmosphere and a sense of calm that is one of the things that make it special.
How to get to Bottle Beach
By longtail boat from Chaloklum - the way we came
The easiest and most common way to get to Bottle Beach is by longtail boat from the fishing village of Chaloklum, in the north of Koh Phangan.
The boat ride usually takes around 10-20 minutes, depending on sea conditions and the departure point.
We got to Chaloklum on our own, and this is where we discovered something well worth knowing before you plan your visit.
When we arrived to take a boat to Bottle Beach, it turned out that if we went on our own we would have to pay a fairly high price for the trip.
So we decided to wait until more passengers joined, so that we could share the cost.
As we were not in a hurry, this was not a big problem for us, but it is definitely something we would have liked to know in advance.
If you are travelling solo or as a couple, bear in mind that the boat does not always leave straight away. Sometimes you need to wait for more passengers, or pay more for a private boat.
The situation changes depending on the season, the number of visitors and sea conditions.
The boat ride to Bottle Beach - a special experience in its own right
One of the things we loved most about the visit was actually the journey there.

The ride in the longtail boat was a special experience in its own right, not just a means of transport.
We set off from Chaloklum and sailed along the north coast of Koh Phangan. From the sea everything looks different: the green hills, the tropical vegetation reaching almost down to the water, the colourful houses and the small places to stay blending into the landscape.
We especially remember how beautiful it was to see all that green from the outside, from the sea, with the houses and small buildings peeping out of the vegetation.
At the start of the ride you see the Chaloklum area, and then the route follows the north coast towards Haad Khom, an area of small bays and places to stay among the hills.
We cannot identify with certainty every building we saw on the way, but the whole view was lovely.
It was one of those moments when you simply enjoy the journey, without rushing to arrive.
Even though we had to wait in Chaloklum until more passengers joined the boat, the ride itself was worth the wait.
Our tip: if you come to Bottle Beach by boat, do not treat the ride as a journey to get over with. Look around and enjoy the view. For us, the journey is an integral part of visiting the beach.
The way back - much simpler than we expected
When we had finished our visit and wanted to go back to Chaloklum, we found the situation was completely different from the way out.
Several boatmen were waiting on the beach, and boats were leaving quite frequently while we were there.
We did not have to wait long, and the return was simple and easy.
That said, we would not assume this is the case every day and at every hour. How often the boats run depends on the number of visitors, the weather and sea conditions.
If you are planning to stay until late afternoon, it is worth finding out in advance when the last boats leave.
How much is the boat to Bottle Beach?
The price is not necessarily fixed and may change depending on the number of passengers, the season and whether it is a shared or private boat.
Travel guides sometimes quote prices of around 150-300 baht (about $4-9 / €4-8) per person each way, but this is a range for illustration only, not a price verified for today.
We recommend agreeing the price directly with the boatman before boarding, and asking whether it is per person or for the whole boat.
Our tip: if you are travelling solo and do not have a tight schedule, it is worth checking whether you can join other passengers. It could save you quite a lot of money.
Can you hike to Bottle Beach over the hills?
Yes, and some travellers choose to do exactly that.
There are hiking trails through the hilly, forested area around the beach, including from the direction of Haad Khom. The trails pass through beautiful tropical scenery, but some of them are steep and rocky.
We did not do the hike ourselves, but on the way back from Bottle Beach we had an interesting conversation with a group of travellers that changed the way we see it.
What did travellers who did the hike tell us?
On the longtail boat back to Chaloklum we met a group of middle-aged travellers who looked very sporty and extremely fit.
They told us they had come to Bottle Beach on foot over the hills, and had chosen to go back by boat.
What stood out in the conversation was that, despite their impressive fitness, they stressed that the hike had not been easy at all physically.
On the other hand, they said the route was very beautiful and that, for them, the view certainly justified the effort.
That conversation stayed with us, because sometimes when you read about a hiking trail in Thailand, it is easy to imagine a short, pleasant walk in the jungle.
But when a group of people who look extremely fit say the hike was challenging, that is definitely something worth taking seriously.
We want to stress that we did not do the hike ourselves, so we cannot vouch for how difficult it is from personal experience. This is what travellers we met told us, and it fits the hilly, rocky character of the area.
How long does the hike take?
How long the hike takes varies depending on the starting point, the route you choose and your pace.
There are fairly short routes from the direction of Haad Khom, and longer routes that can take around two hours or even more.
The times given in travel guides are not consistent, so it is important to check the exact route in advance and not rely only on a rough time estimate.
The hike can include steep climbs and descents, tree roots, rocks and slippery sections, especially after rain.
In Thailand's heat and humidity, even a route that is not particularly long can be a significant effort.
Who is the hike suitable for?
We would suggest considering it mainly if you enjoy nature walks, are used to walking on rough ground and have the right level of fitness.
Bring good walking shoes, enough water, a hat, sun protection and reliable navigation.
We do not recommend setting out in the rain, after heavy rain or at times when you risk getting stuck on the trail after dark.
An interesting option is to walk there and come back by boat, just as the group we met did.
That way you can enjoy the hill scenery on the way there and the sea views on the way back, without doing the challenging route twice.
If you prefer a relaxed beach holiday to a strenuous hike, the boat is the easier option.
Can you get there by car or scooter?
There are steep, rough dirt roads in the area, some of which are suitable for off-road vehicles or dedicated transfers.
We would not recommend trying to get there on a hired scooter without checking the road conditions carefully.
If you are planning to stay on the beach, check with your accommodation whether they offer a transfer service and what the safe way to get there with luggage is.
The atmosphere at Bottle Beach - secluded, but not lonely
One of the things we loved most about the beach was the balance between a feeling of isolation and a sociable atmosphere.

Although the beach is in a fairly remote location, there were quite a lot of people there when we visited.
The atmosphere was happy and pleasant. People were enjoying the sea, sitting in the restaurants, chatting and resting.
And still, the beach did not feel crowded or busy in a way that got in the way of enjoying it.
It kept its sense of calm.
We think this is worth knowing before you go: if you are expecting a private, completely empty beach, that is not necessarily what you will find.
But if you like a beach with a light-hearted atmosphere, a few people around and lots of nature, there is a good chance you will enjoy it.
Food and restaurants at Bottle Beach
During our visit we stopped to eat at one of the local restaurants on the beach.
The food was tasty, and the prices seemed reasonable to us.
This was actually a pleasant surprise, because when you come to a fairly secluded beach you might expect prices to be higher because of the limited access.
Happily, that was not our experience.

The atmosphere in the restaurant was relaxed and suited a beach day perfectly. For us, being able to stop for a good meal without leaving the bay added to the experience.
There are only a few restaurants on the beach, mostly ones run as part of the places to stay.
You can usually find familiar Thai food such as fried rice, pad thai, curry and dishes with chicken or seafood, alongside basic Western dishes.
The choice is not as wide as in Chaloklum or the main areas of Koh Phangan, but you can certainly fit in lunch here during your visit.
Prices and options may change, so our impressions relate to our visit in 2025 and are not a guarantee of prices today.
What is there to do at Bottle Beach?
Enjoy the beach and the sea
The main attraction is simply the beach itself.

You can swim when the sea is calm, sunbathe, read a book, rest in the shade or sit facing the water.
The view of the bay, with the green hills around it, is a big part of the experience.
Remember that sea conditions change with the weather and the season, and do not assume there are lifeguards.
Snorkelling
Around the rocky parts of the bay you can sometimes see fish when the sea is calm and visibility is good.
However, if snorkelling is your main aim, it is worth knowing about the Mae Haad and Koh Ma area in north-west Koh Phangan too.
Bottle Beach Viewpoint
Above the beach is a viewpoint from which you can see the bay from above, surrounded by green hills.
Getting up to the viewpoint involves a steep walk, and in places scrambling over rocks.
This is not an accessible viewpoint with a paved path and proper railings.
We did not go up to the viewpoint on our visit, so the information here is based on descriptions of the route rather than personal experience.
If you are planning to go up, check current conditions on the ground and take suitable shoes and water.
Can you stay overnight at Bottle Beach?
Yes. Bottle Beach is not only for day visits.

There are several places to stay on the beach, mainly bungalows and fairly simple resorts, some of them right by the sea.
Staying on the beach can suit anyone looking for peace, nature and a break from the more developed areas of Koh Phangan.
During the day visitors arrive by boat, but in the evening, after many of them have left, the beach can become even quieter.
On the other hand, it is important to know that the choice of restaurants, shops and services is limited.
Places to stay at Bottle Beach
Bottle Beach 1 Resort
A long-established place to stay offering rooms and bungalows with different levels of facilities, along with a restaurant and a pool.
Check the room type carefully before booking, as not all rooms necessarily offer the same conditions, such as air conditioning or hot water.
Haad Khuad Resort
Another option for staying in quiet surroundings close to the beach, with a fairly simple feel.
Smile Bungalow
Another basic place to stay in the area, which may suit travellers looking for simple accommodation close to nature.
We want to point out: we visited Bottle Beach for just a few hours and did not stay at any of these places. So we cannot speak from personal experience about the quality of the rooms, cleanliness or service.
Before booking, check recent reviews, photos of the specific room, air conditioning, hot water and how to get there.
Should you come for a day or stay overnight?
It depends on your style of travel.
If you have four or five days on Koh Phangan and want to discover several beaches, visit villages, eat at restaurants and enjoy the nightlife too, a few hours or a full day at Bottle Beach may be enough.
That is how we chose to visit, and we enjoyed it very much.
On the other hand, if you have more time and are looking for a quiet place to stay by the sea, a night or two can be a special experience.
Just remember that the secluded location makes every trip away from the beach more complicated.
Are there events or parties at Bottle Beach?
Bottle Beach is not known as a regular party hub like Haad Rin, home of the Full Moon Party.

We did not find a regular, verified calendar of monthly parties or festivals held on the beach itself.
Places to stay may occasionally organise music nights or special activities, but check this directly with them.
For us, the reason to come here is not any particular event, but the beach, the view and the atmosphere.
When is the best time to visit Bottle Beach?
You can visit Koh Phangan all year round, but it is important to take the rainy seasons and sea conditions into account.
In general, January-April is considered a relatively good time to visit the Gulf of Thailand area, while October-December usually brings a higher risk of rain and rough seas.
That said, the weather varies from year to year, and no period guarantees a completely calm sea.
At Bottle Beach this matters in particular, because the easiest way to get there is by boat.
On days with rough seas, the boat service may be limited or may not run at all.
So check the weather forecast and sea conditions before you set off.
Useful tips before you go
- If you come on your own, allow for a wait for the boat. We had to wait until more passengers joined to avoid paying a high price for a private boat.
- Enjoy the boat ride. The view along the north coast of Koh Phangan is beautiful, and the journey itself was one of the most memorable parts of our visit.
- Do not underestimate the hiking trail. The sporty travellers we met said it was physically hard, even though it was very beautiful.
- You can walk one way and take the boat the other. That is what the travellers we met did, and it is an interesting option if you love nature walks.
- Check about return boats in advance. For us the return was easy, but availability can change.
- Bring cash. Do not count on being able to withdraw money on the beach or pay by card everywhere.
- Take water, a hat and sunscreen. Especially if you are planning to hike.
- If you are staying overnight, plan how to get there with your luggage. It is worth arranging this in advance with your accommodation.
How to fit Bottle Beach into a Koh Phangan itinerary
As the boats to Bottle Beach leave from Chaloklum, it makes sense to combine the two places on the same day.
You can get to Chaloklum in the morning, take a boat to Bottle Beach, spend a few hours on the beach, have lunch and return to the village in the afternoon.
If you have time left, you can wander around Chaloklum itself, enjoy the fishing village atmosphere and try the local restaurants.
If you love nature walks, you could also look into hiking to the beach and coming back by boat, but it is important to choose a route that suits your fitness and experience.
If you are planning to see more beaches on Koh Phangan, it is worth reading about:
- Chaloklum: a fishing village with restaurants and a local atmosphere.
- Haad Yao: a beach with restaurants, sunsets and places to stay.
- Mae Haad and Koh Ma: an area known for the sandbar linking it to the little island and for snorkelling.
- Thong Nai Pan Noi: a beautiful bay in north-east Koh Phangan, with hotels and a completely different atmosphere.
Each of these beaches offers a different experience, and for us that is one of the things that make Koh Phangan such an interesting island.
So is Bottle Beach worth a visit?
For us, definitely yes.
We loved the beach, its happy and peaceful atmosphere, the good meal we ate and the reasonable prices we found.
But more than anything, we remember the whole experience of getting there and back.
The wait in Chaloklum for the boat to fill up, the beautiful ride along the north coast, the colourful houses peeping out of the green hills, and the feeling that the journey itself is part of the trip.
We also remember the conversation on the way back with the group of travellers who had hiked over the hills. They looked extremely fit, and yet they said the walk had been very hard, but beautiful.
That conversation showed us how differently you can experience the same place: arriving fairly comfortably by boat, or choosing a challenging physical adventure over the hills.
Bottle Beach is not just another beautiful beach on Koh Phangan. It is a place where the journey itself can become one of the memories of your trip.
We visited Bottle Beach during our trip to Thailand in 2025. The personal descriptions in this article are based on our visit, including the boat ride, the food, the atmosphere and the conversation with travellers on the way back. The information about accommodation, trails and other services is additional information worth checking close to your visit.
