Thong Nai Pan, Koh Phangan: Two Beautiful Beaches, Indulgent Hotels and What to Know Before You Book

Thong Nai Pan is one of the most beautiful areas of Koh Phangan, but before you book a hotel here there's one important thing to understand: it's two different beaches, not one.

Thong Nai Pan beach on Koh Phangan is really two beaches. Thong Nai Pan Noi is the smaller, more upmarket bay, home to some of Koh Phangan's best-known luxury hotels. Thong Nai Pan Yai is the larger, more open bay, with a laid-back atmosphere and a wider choice of places to stay.

Both are in the north-east of the island, surrounded by green hills, and offer a different kind of holiday from the west-coast beaches such as Haad Yao and Srithanu.

During our trip to Koh Phangan we stayed at Panviman Resort, which sits on the hill at the end of Noi bay. It was one of the most beautiful hotels we stayed at on the island, with distinctive design, a wonderful pool, a gorgeous beach and outstanding service.

But our time in the area also taught us a few things you don't always see in the photos: not every spot on the beach is equally good for swimming, not every luxury hotel gives you a sense of privacy, and the weather can completely change the experience in a small area built mainly around beach holidays.

In this guide we share our own experience, explain the differences between the two bays and help you work out where to stay, who the area suits and what to check before you book.

01Where is Thong Nai Pan?

Thong Nai Pan is in the north-east of Koh Phangan, in a fairly hilly and green part of the island, on the opposite side from the well-known west-coast beaches.

The two bays sit side by side, with a green, rocky headland between them. Noi is the northern and smaller bay, and Yai is the southern and larger one.

The road to the area is paved, but it climbs, drops and twists. So although Koh Phangan isn't a particularly big island, Thong Nai Pan can feel remote from the rest of it.

That distance is part of its charm.

Unlike Haad Yao, where we loved being able to pop out to cafes and restaurants and wander between nearby beaches, Thong Nai Pan is better suited to a holiday where the hotel and the beach are at the centre of the experience.

That doesn't mean you have to stay in the resort all day. There are restaurants, shops and services in the area, but the choice is smaller and trips to other parts of the island take longer.

So the first question we'd ask before booking a hotel here isn't which hotel is the most beautiful, but what kind of holiday you want.

If you're planning a few days of rest, beach and pool, Thong Nai Pan can be a great choice. If you want to head out to a different area every day, it's worth considering a more central base as well.

02Thong Nai Pan Noi or Yai: what's the difference?

Both beaches are beautiful and both suit a relaxed holiday, but there are significant differences between them.

Thong Nai Pan Noi Thong Nai Pan Yai
Size of beach A smaller, more intimate bay A large bay with a longer strip of sand
Atmosphere Indulgent resorts, a polished holiday Simple, laid-back and less formal
Places to stay Luxury resorts and boutique hotels Bungalows, mid-range hotels and resorts
Restaurants Hotel restaurants and places in the village Beach restaurants and local places
Best for Couples, honeymooners and an indulgent holiday Families, couples and travellers on different budgets
What to check Price, room location, steps and hotel facilities Room standard, closeness to the beach and maintenance

Choosing between Noi and Yai isn't just a question of price.

If you want a hotel with a big pool, pampering service, a sea view and a romantic room, we'd start with Noi.

If you want a long, pleasant beach, beach restaurants and a simpler atmosphere, take a look at Yai.

03Thong Nai Pan Noi: the small, upmarket bay

Thong Nai Pan Noi is a beautiful bay surrounded by green hills, with a strip of pale sand and water that can be very clear and calm in the right conditions.

Along the beach are some of Koh Phangan's luxury resorts, including Anantara Rasananda and Santhiya, while Panviman is built on the hill at the end of the bay.

For all its upmarket character, it isn't a completely cut-off area.

Behind the beach is a small village with restaurants, shops and services. Some of the hotels blend right into the village, with walkways linking the beach to the streets behind it.

That's a detail that isn't always obvious when you look at hotel photos.

A hotel on the beach or a hotel on the hill?

In Thong Nai Pan Noi you can choose between two different experiences.

A hotel right on the sand lets you step easily from your room to the beach, the restaurants and the village streets.

A hotel on the hill can offer an open view and a greater sense of privacy, but also climbs, steps and a certain reliance on in-house shuttles.

At Panviman we experienced the second option, and in our view it has a special appeal.

04The village and the food market: you don't have to eat only at your hotel

Behind the beach at Noi, near the hotel entrances, there's a small village: a few pleasant streets with restaurants, bars, massage places and basic services. It isn't a shopping centre, but it's exactly what more isolated places lack - the chance to leave your hotel in the evening and eat well, at prices far kinder than the resort restaurants.

The Thong Nai Pan food market

Our most enjoyable evening in the area was at the local food court: stalls with different dishes, a wine stall, desserts and tables where everyone sits together. For us it was a gourmet meal at a ridiculously low price.

Some of the Noi hotels open straight onto the village streets, far more so than Panviman. We discovered this by chance, on a rainy day, and we tell the story in the chapter on the weather.

05Panviman Resort: the reason we'd go back to Thong Nai Pan

We stayed here · February 2025We'd go back

Panviman is one of the hotels we enjoyed most on Koh Phangan, and we'd happily go back.

In design terms it's one of the hotels we loved most: beautiful, romantic and homely, with lots of thoughtfully designed corners, plants and decorative details. The service was outstanding - smiling, kind and attentive staff. We were given a drink at check-in, they helped us with our suitcases, and when we asked to change rooms they sorted it out immediately.

The pool is large and indulgent, with an area where you can order coffee and cocktails, and from there you go down to a beautiful beach at the end of the bay. The beach loungers are very comfortable, and it feels almost private. While we were there the waves by the hotel's rocks were stronger, and we found calmer water for swimming further along the bay.

And what we think makes it most special: the sense of privacy, despite being close to the village. Panviman sits on the hill at the end of the bay and doesn't merge into the village streets the way some of the other hotels do. The entrance we used was the lower gate near the village, and from there we went up the hill on an in-house shuttle. The shuttles ran very frequently, and we hardly ever had to wait.

The hotel particularly suits couples who want to treat themselves and enjoy a few quiet days facing the sea. It's less suited to anyone who struggles with slopes and steps: it's built on a steep hillside, with rooms and facilities on different levels.

Our caveat: the rooms are beautiful and romantic, but some of the furniture and bathroom fittings showed signs of wear and slightly dated design. There was no cleanliness or hygiene issue at all, just some ageing and wear.

And one more thing we learned there about booking: in February 2025, because of a problem with our booking, we discovered by chance that reception offered us about 4,300 THB (about $128 / €114) per night, compared with about 7,600 THB (about $226 / €201) per night for the online booking. These aren't current prices, and it isn't proof that booking direct is always cheaper. We tell the full story in our review.

06More hotels in Thong Nai Pan Noi

We didn't stay at these hotels

Alongside Panviman, Noi bay has several other indulgent resorts worth knowing about.

We didn't stay at the hotels below, so our impression of them is based on their features rather than on a personal stay.

Anantara Rasananda: luxury right on the beach

Anantara Rasananda is one of the best-known luxury resorts in Thong Nai Pan Noi.

The hotel is right on the beach and offers suites and villas with private pools.

It suits anyone looking for an especially indulgent holiday, a honeymoon or a high-end stay with the beach just outside the grounds.

The main difference between it and Panviman is the style of location: Anantara is part of the beachfront and the village behind it, while Panviman sits on the hill at the end of the bay and gives a greater sense of separation.

That doesn't make one better than the other on every count. It's simply a different kind of stay.

Santhiya Koh Phangan: traditional Thai design

Santhiya is another resort in the Noi area, known for its traditional Thai style of architecture.

The design makes extensive use of wood, carved details, plants and the tropical scenery.

It's a hotel worth checking if you like resorts with a strong design character and aren't specifically looking for a modern, minimalist style.

The grounds are partly built on sloping land, so it's important to check where your room is and how easy it is to reach the facilities.

How to choose between the hotels

If you're looking for a hotel with a sense of privacy and a hillside view, Panviman is a particularly interesting option.

If you prefer a luxury stay right on the beach, take a look at Anantara.

And if you love traditional, richly detailed Thai design, Santhiya may suit you.

Either way, we recommend checking the exact room category rather than choosing on the strength of photos of the shared areas.

07Thong Nai Pan Yai: the big, laid-back beach

Dreamland Resort: a tip from travellers who go back every year

We got to know Thong Nai Pan Yai thanks to a chance meeting at the small food market in Thong Nai Pan Noi village.

There we met friends who were staying at Dreamland Resort, which is in the other bay, Thong Nai Pan Yai. They told us they go back to this hotel every year and are very happy with it.

According to them, it's a great place, with excellent service and particularly good value. The fact that they choose to return year after year made us curious, so we decided to go over to the other side of Thong Nai Pan and see the area for ourselves.

It was also our chance to get to know Thong Nai Pan Yai and understand how different its atmosphere is from Noi, where we stayed at Panviman.

We want to be clear: we visited Dreamland, but we didn't stay there. So the recommendation about the quality of the accommodation and service is based on the experience of the friends we met, not on our own stay.

If you're looking for a place to stay in Thong Nai Pan Yai at a more affordable price than the luxury hotels of Noi, Dreamland is definitely worth checking. Of course, compare prices and read recent reviews before you book.

The big bay of Thong Nai Pan

South of Noi is Thong Nai Pan Yai, the larger bay.

The strip of sand here is longer and more open, and the atmosphere is generally simpler and less focused on luxury.

Along the beach there are bungalows, resorts, restaurants and places to stay at different levels.

Yai suits anyone looking for a relaxed beach holiday without feeling they have to book a luxury resort to enjoy the area.

What is the beach like?

Thong Nai Pan Yai is a fairly long beach, with pale sand and a wide bay.

It particularly suits anyone who loves walks along the shore, sitting by the sea and taking things easy.

In the right sea conditions you can enjoy a swim too, but as on any beach on Koh Phangan, it's important to check the waves and the wind.

The atmosphere in Yai

Compared with Noi, Yai feels less upmarket and more simple.

It has beach restaurants, places to stay at different levels and an atmosphere that suits anyone who wants to spend a few days at a slow pace.

If you'd rather have a pleasant bungalow on the beach than a lavish resort, Yai can be a good choice.

We walked from Noi to Yai

Noi and Yai are two separate bays, with a green, rocky headland between them. So it isn't a walk along the same strip of sand, but a crossing over the hill. From Panviman we carried on along this path to Yai on foot. On the map the distance looks small, but in practice the route has noticeable climbs and descents, and in Thailand's heat and humidity the walk can be tiring.

Wear comfortable shoes, take water and avoid the hottest hours. If walking is hard for you, a local taxi is an option.

Where to stay in Thong Nai Pan Yai

Besides Dreamland, which we described at the start of this chapter, there are other options along the beach, including bungalows and resorts at different levels.

Before you book, check the condition of the rooms, how close to the beach they really are and the facilities each place offers.

Especially in simpler places to stay, there can be significant differences between room categories.

08Is Thong Nai Pan good for swimming?

One of the advantages of both Thong Nai Pan bays is that across large parts of them the water is deeper than at some of the shallow beaches in west Koh Phangan.

At Haad Yao, for example, the water can be very shallow a long way out from the shore at low tide.

At Thong Nai Pan low tide usually restricts swimming less, but that doesn't mean the sea is always calm.

Both bays face north-east, and when winds and waves come from that direction, the sea can get rough.

Even within the same bay there can be differences from one spot to another. At Noi, for example, the waves near the rocks at the end of the bay were stronger while we were there, and further along the bay, towards the other hotels, the water was calmer. This isn't a fixed pattern; it changes with the season and the winds.

So if swimming is a big part of your holiday, check the actual sea conditions rather than relying only on photos.

09What is there to do in Thong Nai Pan?

The main attraction in the area is the beaches themselves.

It's a place for anyone who wants to rest, swim, enjoy the pool, read a book or sit in a restaurant facing the sea.

But there are also a few options if you want to get out of the hotel.

Visit both bays

Even if you're staying at Noi, it's worth seeing Yai, and vice versa.

The beaches are fairly close together, and you can walk between them, but the route crosses a hill, so the walk isn't always comfortable in the heat.

Explore the Than Sadet area

On the east side of Koh Phangan is the Than Sadet area, with waterfalls, tropical forest and a beach.

It can be an interesting outing if you want to add some nature to your stay in the area.

Check the state of the road, the conditions for entering the area and how much water is flowing in the waterfalls in advance, as this changes with the season and the rains.

Enjoy the mornings

Unlike Koh Phangan's west-coast beaches, which are famous for their sunsets, Thong Nai Pan faces north-east.

So it's the mornings that can be especially beautiful here, with soft light over the bay.

If you like getting up early, it's worth heading to the beach before it gets busy.

10Restaurants, shops and evenings out

Both bays have restaurants, some inside the hotels and some independent.

At Noi there's a small village behind the beach, with restaurants, shops and services and the food market we loved. At Yai there are beach restaurants and other local places.

You can certainly go out for dinner away from your hotel, but the choice is fairly limited compared with areas like Haad Yao or Thong Sala.

If you love discovering new cafes and restaurants every day, bear that in mind.

Is there any nightlife?

There are bars and places to sit in the evening, but Thong Nai Pan isn't a big-party area.

If you're coming to Koh Phangan mainly for the nightlife or the Full Moon parties, you'll probably prefer to stay somewhere else.

11The weather: why it matters so much in Thong Nai Pan

One of the things we learned during our trip to Koh Phangan is how much the weather can affect a holiday in an area built mainly around the beach.

On the days we spent at Panviman the weather was simply wonderful.

We could enjoy the pool, the beach, the view and the hotel's open spaces. When the sun is out and the sea looks beautiful, Thong Nai Pan is a wonderful place to be.

But on another day, when we drove from the Haad Yao area to Thong Nai Pan to visit a place we'd found on Google, we ran into exceptionally heavy rain.

The rain was so heavy that it was almost impossible to be outside. In the end we found ourselves sitting in the lobby of one of the hotels, waiting, without much else to do in the area.

On that visit we walked through one of the nearby hotels and found, to our surprise, that we were back on the same beach where we'd stayed at Panviman. Only then did we realise how much some of the Noi hotels blend into the village behind them, and how well Panviman, up on the hill, manages to feel like a place apart.

It was a very different experience from what we'd had on Koh Phi Phi, for example, where even when we got stuck in the rain we found more shops and places to wander around.

In Thong Nai Pan, when the rain is heavy and persistent, your options are more limited.

Should you avoid the area in the rainy season?

Not necessarily.

The weather in Thailand is changeable, and even in the rainy seasons there can be very beautiful days. Sometimes it's a short shower that passes, and afterwards you can go back to the beach.

But if you're planning a relatively expensive resort holiday, where most of the enjoyment comes from the pool, the sea and the outdoor spaces, check carefully which season you're travelling in.

Our advice is to choose Thong Nai Pan at a time of year with a good chance of pleasant weather, and to check in advance what the hotel offers on rainy days too.

A hotel with a good restaurant, covered spaces and other facilities can be a real advantage if the weather turns.

12How to get to Thong Nai Pan

Most travellers arrive on Koh Phangan by ferry, get off at Thong Sala and continue by road to Thong Nai Pan.

The road runs through hilly country, with climbs, descents and bends.

The drive from Thong Sala usually takes about 30-50 minutes, depending on road conditions and exactly where your hotel is.

If you're arriving with suitcases, we'd recommend arranging a transfer through your hotel in advance or checking the transport options from the pier.

Some resorts offer paid transfers, and sometimes combined transfers from Koh Samui.

Check the price, the pick-up point and the arrival time in advance.

Do you need to hire a scooter?

If you're coming for a resort holiday and plan to spend most of your time on the beach and at the hotel, you don't need a scooter.

You can arrive by transfer, walk to the nearby restaurants and stay in the area.

But if you want to explore a lot of Koh Phangan, you'll need to rely on transport.

The road to Thong Nai Pan is hilly and winding, so it isn't suitable for anyone without scooter-riding experience.

If you're not an experienced rider, you're better off using taxis and transfers.

13Should you come for a day or stay in the area?

You can visit Thong Nai Pan on a day trip, especially if you're already on Koh Phangan and have a car or a transfer.

But because of the distance and the hilly road, we wouldn't come here just for a quick stop.

If you're making the trip, give yourself enough time to enjoy the beach, have something to eat and see at least one of the two bays at a relaxed pace.

If you're after a relaxing holiday, there's a big advantage to staying in the area.

That way you can enjoy the beach in the morning, spend time at the pool and go back to your room without thinking about the long drive to the other side of the island.

How many nights should you spend there?

In our view, two to four nights is about right for most travellers.

Two nights can be enough for a short resort break.

Three or four nights suit anyone who wants to rest, enjoy the beach and also fit in a visit to the other bay or a short nature outing.

If you're planning to spend most of your holiday at an indulgent hotel, you can of course stay longer.

14Thong Nai Pan or Haad Yao: which is the better base?

We love both areas, but for different reasons.

In Haad Yao we especially loved the mix of a beautiful beach with cafes, restaurants and the feeling of life all around.

In Thong Nai Pan we enjoyed a holiday more focused on the hotel, the beach and the view.

Thong Nai Pan Haad Yao
Location North-east of the island North-west of the island
Type of holiday Resorts, beaches and rest Beach, cafes and day trips
Swimming Usually less affected by shallow low tides Low tide can limit swimming
Sunsets Faces the sunrise Faces west and is good for sunsets
Hotels Several especially upmarket resorts A wide range of places to stay
Getting around Fairly remote from the rest of the island Easier for trips along the west coast
Who it suits Those who want to rest and be pampered Those who want to combine the beach with going out and day trips

If we were planning a few days of romantic resort holiday, we'd look at Thong Nai Pan Noi.

If we wanted a more independent holiday, with cafes, restaurants and easy trips to nearby beaches, we'd lean towards Haad Yao.

There's no single area that's better for everyone. These are two different styles of holiday on Koh Phangan.

16Thong Nai Pan FAQ

Which beach is better, Thong Nai Pan Noi or Yai?

Noi is better for anyone looking for luxury resorts and an indulgent couples' holiday. Yai suits those who prefer a longer beach, a simpler atmosphere and a wider range of places to stay.

Is Thong Nai Pan good for families?

Yes. In both bays you can find places to stay that suit families. Check the beach access, the hotel facilities and the sea conditions for the dates of your stay.

Are there restaurants outside the hotels?

Yes. At Noi there's a small village behind the beach, with restaurants and a food market we especially loved, and at Yai there are beach restaurants and other local places. That said, the choice is smaller than in the more central areas of Koh Phangan.

Can you walk between Noi and Yai?

Yes, and we did it ourselves. The route has noticeable climbs and descents, so in the heat it can be hard going.

Is Thong Nai Pan good for a honeymoon?

Definitely. Thong Nai Pan Noi is one of the areas worth considering for a honeymoon, thanks to its beautiful beach and choice of indulgent resorts.

Can you get there without a scooter?

Yes. You can arrange a transfer to your hotel and get around the beach area on foot. For longer trips you'll need taxis or transfers.

Are there sunsets at Thong Nai Pan?

The beaches face north-east, so they aren't the natural choice for watching the sun go down over the sea. If sunsets are a big part of your holiday, take a look at Koh Phangan's west-coast beaches as well.

Is Panviman worth it?

In our experience, definitely. The hotel is beautiful, the service is excellent, the pool is indulgent and the location gives a special sense of privacy. Our caveat concerns wear and some ageing in parts of the furniture and room fittings, not cleanliness. Our full review is on the hotel's page.

Is Thong Nai Pan expensive?

Not necessarily. Noi is associated with luxury resorts, but at Yai you can also find simpler places to stay. Prices vary with the season, the room type and when you book.

17Our bottom line: should you stay in Thong Nai Pan?

Yes, especially if you're looking for a few days of relaxing, indulgent beach holiday.

Thong Nai Pan offers beautiful beaches, green scenery and a different atmosphere from the more central areas of Koh Phangan.

But it doesn't suit every style of travel.

If you want to get to know the island, move between beaches, go out to cafes and spend every day somewhere different, we'd consider staying in a more accessible area.

On the other hand, if you want to stop for a few days, enjoy a beautiful hotel, swim, rest and spend time facing the sea, Thong Nai Pan can be a wonderful choice.

For us, Panviman is a great example of what this area can offer: a beautiful hotel, outstanding service, a wonderful pool, an impressive beach and a sense of privacy you won't necessarily find even at more expensive hotels.

It wasn't perfect in every detail, but the overall experience was so good that we'd happily go back.

If you're looking for a romantic, indulgent resort, start with Thong Nai Pan Noi. If you prefer a simpler, more laid-back beach holiday, look at Thong Nai Pan Yai.

And if you're still torn between the different areas of Koh Phangan, carry on to our guide where to stay on Koh Phangan, where we compare the island's beaches and areas.
