Haad Yao Beach, Koh Phangan: The Beach We Fell For, Where to Stay and What to Know
Haad Yao is one of our favourite beaches on Koh Phangan, and not only because of the beach itself. It has a combination we really love: a beautiful strip of sand, striking sunsets, restaurants and cafes, places to stay at every price and an atmosphere that changes through the day.
- LocationNorth-west Koh Phangan
- The beachA beautiful tropical beach, laid-back by day with a lively evening scene
- Best forCouples, independent travellers and anyone who wants beach time plus a night out
- SwimmingAffected by the tides; at low tide the water can be very shallow
- SunsetsOne of the best reasons to come
- NightlifePubs and parties, but nothing like Haad Rin
- Where to stayBungalows, resorts and hotels across a range of prices
- Our standout pickBaan Kiao
- Recommended stay3-5 nights, and easily longer
Haad Yao beach on Koh Phangan is easy to enjoy at your own pace. In the morning and around midday you can laze on the sand, sit facing the sea and let the day drift by. In the evening the area comes alive, the pubs fill up and there are parties too. It isn't Haad Rin with its famous Full Moon parties, but it's certainly not a sleepy beach with nothing to do after sunset.
During our trip to Koh Phangan in February-March 2025 we got to know the area through several different places to stay. We slept at Baan Kiao, at Long Bay Resort and for one night at Haad Yao Bayview. We also visited High Life, one of the places we would consider staying at next time.
Staying at several hotels in the same area taught us something important: even when the beach itself is wonderful, the hotel you choose can change the whole experience.
In this guide we share what we loved about Haad Yao, the good and the not-so-good from the hotels, the places worth knowing and the things to be aware of before you book.

01Where is Haad Yao?
Haad Yao is on the north-west side of Koh Phangan, not far from Haad Salad, Haad Son and Srithanu.
It's a fairly easy area in which to combine a beach holiday with meals out, cafes and trips to nearby beaches.
Unlike Thong Nai Pan, which sits in the north-east of the island and feels more remote, Haad Yao is part of a string of beach areas and small villages along the west coast.
For us, that's one of its biggest advantages.
You can spend a whole day on the beach, but you don't have to stay put. There are restaurants, places to go out, cafes and plenty of options for heading off to explore other parts of Koh Phangan.
If it's your first time on the island and you want a beautiful beach without feeling cut off from everything else you're interested in, Haad Yao is well worth a look.
02What is Haad Yao beach like?
Haad Yao is a beach with a strip of pale sand, palm trees, and restaurants and places to stay facing the sea.
It's especially pretty when the light is soft, and at sunset it takes on a completely different mood.
One of the things we love about beaches in Thailand is being able to sit right on the sand, facing the water, without feeling you need to plan anything special.
Haad Yao has exactly that feeling.
Chairs on the sand, boats in the background, restaurants facing the sea and sunsets that make the whole place look almost painted.

But beyond the beauty, there's also the pleasant feel of a beach that people actually live on. It isn't a bay made up only of luxury resorts, but an area with all kinds of places to stay, restaurants, businesses and travellers spending their day there.
The beach by day and by night
We want to be clear that Haad Yao is not a completely quiet beach.
During the day the atmosphere is usually more relaxed. People spend time on the beach, sit in the restaurants, swim when the sea allows and enjoy the sun.
But in the evening the area wakes up.
The pubs fill up, there's music and there are parties too. The atmosphere can be lively and buzzing.

It isn't the kind of nightlife associated with Haad Rin and the Full Moon parties, but if you're after a secluded beach that stays completely quiet at night as well, you should take this into account.
On the other hand, for us this mix is actually part of the charm: a beautiful, easy-going beach by day, with the option of going out in the evening without feeling that everything shuts early.
03Can you swim at Haad Yao?
Yes, but it's important to understand the effect of the tides.
Haad Yao is on the west side of Koh Phangan, where the beaches are fairly shallow with areas of reef.
At high tide and in the right sea conditions you can enjoy the water, but at low tide the sea can pull back and leave very shallow stretches.
So if you're picturing a beach where you can wade into deep water and swim at any time of day, be aware that this isn't always the case.
The water level changes with the tidal cycle, the season and the weather.

We recommend checking what the sea is actually like rather than relying only on photos of the beach taken at high tide.
If you're planning to swim, check the tide times for the day of your visit, in an app or on a tide-table website, and plan your swim around high tide. The pattern changes through the year, so it won't be the same on every visit.
Is there snorkelling at Haad Yao?
There's reef and rocky areas nearby that can be suitable for snorkelling in good conditions.
That said, visibility and access to the water vary, and at low tide it's especially important to be careful not to step on coral or wade into areas that are too shallow.
If snorkelling is your main goal, it's also worth looking at Mae Haad and Koh Ma, in the north-west of Koh Phangan.
04Sunsets at Haad Yao: one of the reasons we fell for the area
One of Haad Yao's great advantages is its position on the west side of the island.
In the late afternoon the sun goes down over the sea, and the beach takes on especially warm, beautiful colours.
That's the time we most love being on the beach.
You can sit on the sand, pick a spot facing the water, order something to drink and enjoy the view.
Our photos of Haad Yao, including the sunsets and the orange beach chairs on the sand, capture that atmosphere well.

These are exactly the moments that make us love sleeping near a beach rather than just coming for a short visit.
When you stay in the area, you don't need to think about getting back after sunset. You can simply stay on, enjoy the evening and carry on to one of the places nearby.
05Where to stay in Haad Yao
One of the things that makes Haad Yao an interesting area is the range of places to stay.
You'll find beachfront resorts, bungalows, hotels with pools and places set a little higher up, with a view over the bay.
But location alone doesn't tell the whole story.
During our time in the area we stayed at several different places, and the differences between them were significant.
There's one hotel we'd go back to without a second thought, one with a great room but a problem that bothered us every evening, and one where we stayed just a single night.
So the recommendations below are based on what we actually experienced, not just on photos or ratings on booking sites.
06Baan Kiao: one of our strongest recommendations from the whole trip
Baan Kiao is one of the places we loved most on our whole trip to Thailand, and we would definitely go back.
What made it special for us wasn't just the place itself, but above all the people and the service.
The staff were lovely, kind and attentive, and we felt there was someone who genuinely wanted to help us enjoy our stay and the area.
One experience we remember particularly well was the way the manager treated us: she gave us recommendations and helped us get to know the surroundings better.
For us, that's exactly the difference between a place that provides a room and a place where you feel you're being hosted.

When we think about the hotels we'd like to return to, Baan Kiao is very high on the list.
Why would we recommend it?
Because service and personal attention can shape a holiday just as much as the size of the room or the number of stars.
Where the staff are friendly, attentive and know the area, it's easier to feel at home, get good tips and enjoy your stay.
That was our experience at Baan Kiao.
Who is it for? Anyone looking for a pleasant place to stay in the Haad Yao area who puts a high value on personal service and atmosphere.
Would we go back? Definitely. It's one of our standout recommendations from the whole trip.
07Long Bay Resort: a stunning room, a great price - and an insect problem
We stayed at Long Bay Resort for a week in February 2025.
We slept in a room in the hotel's new building, and the room itself was stunning.
We want to stress this, because the problem we had there had nothing to do with how the room looked or with it being old.
Quite the opposite: we really loved the room.
At the time we paid about 2,400 THB (about $71 / €63) per night, a price we felt was very attractive for the room we got.
But there was one problem that affected the experience: every evening, insects appeared.
It happened night after night and was unpleasant, especially over a stay of a whole week.
We don't know whether it's an ongoing problem at the hotel, whether it was linked to the time of year we came, or whether it has been dealt with since. So we don't want to present it as something that is necessarily still the case today.
But it was our experience, and we think it's important to share it.

Would we recommend Long Bay?
Our answer is: yes, but with a caveat.
On the one hand, we got a beautiful room in the new building, at a price that was very good value at the time of our stay.
On the other hand, the insect problem that came back every evening took the edge off our comfort.
If we were thinking of booking there again, we'd check recent reviews, especially about insects and room maintenance, rather than relying on the lovely photos.
A note on price: about 2,400 THB (about $71 / €63) per night is what we paid in February 2025, not a current price or one that is guaranteed for future bookings.
08Haad Yao Bayview: one night, and not an experience that became a recommendation
We spent one night at Haad Yao Bayview.
We arrived at midnight after being in the Srithanu area, so the arrival itself was part of moving between places to stay on Koh Phangan.
The short stay didn't make it one of the places we would especially recommend.
We'd rather be precise here: this was a one-night experience only, not a long stay that lets you get to know all of the hotel's services properly.
So we wouldn't draw sweeping conclusions from our experience about all the rooms or about how other guests find it.
But compared with the places we particularly enjoyed in the area, Baan Kiao above all, it didn't make our list of hotels we'd choose to return to.
If you're thinking of booking: check recent photos and reviews, the room type and where it sits in relation to the beach and the facilities.

09High Life Bungalow: we visited but didn't stay - and we might choose it next time
High Life is one of the places in the Haad Yao area that intrigued us.
It sits on a hill looking out to sea, and the view is one of the things that sets it apart.
We visited, but we didn't stay.
So we can't speak from personal experience about the quality of the rooms, the beds, the service over a stay or the breakfast.
What did draw us was the location and the atmosphere, and especially the chance to enjoy a wide-open view from above.
Who might it suit?
Anyone looking for a place to stay with a view over the bay who is willing to weigh up the pros and cons of staying on a hill.
Check the route down to the beach, the number of steps and where the rooms are, especially if you plan to go up and down several times a day.
Would we consider staying there? Yes. It's one of the places we'd look at seriously on our next visit.
But for now this is an impression from a visit, not a recommendation based on a stay.
10Cafes and restaurants in Haad Yao
One of the things we love about Haad Yao is that you don't have to spend all day at your hotel or at the restaurant on the beach.
The area has cafes, restaurants and places you can pop into during the day.
Some are on the beach itself, and others along the road and on the slopes behind it.
What's Cup!: the cafe we loved for breakfast
One of the places we remember fondly is What's Cup!, up the hill in the Haad Yao area.
We had breakfast there, and it worked well for us, not least because one of us was able to find something that suited her dietary preferences and her avoidance of gluten.
We love places where you can start the day slowly, sit with a coffee and enjoy the atmosphere without rushing anywhere.
What's Cup! was one of those places for us.

If you avoid gluten, ask on the spot what suits you and how it's prepared. Catering for a gluten-free diet is not necessarily a guarantee against cross-contamination for people with coeliac disease.
Pura Vida: a light breakfast at the start of the strip
Pura Vida is a cafe at the start of Haad Yao's strip of cafes.
We sat down there to a breakfast of two bowls: yoghurt with fresh fruit and granola, and a vegan coconut yoghurt with granola, nuts, seeds and coconut flakes.
Bubba's Roastery - breakfast at the roastery
Right next door, opposite the 7-Eleven, is Bubba's Roastery, the roastery of Bubba's. We had breakfast there on 19 February 2025: an omelette with bacon and toast, a falafel bowl with salad, and coffee.

Small shops and places you find along the way
Wandering around the area we also came across a clothes shop with lovely dresses, where the prices felt high to us compared with what we'd seen in Pai in northern Thailand.
It was a small reminder that even within Thailand there are big differences in the kind of shops and the prices from one destination to the next.
Haad Yao isn't a big shopping area, but it has enough small businesses to make wandering around the beach part of the experience.
11Nightlife in Haad Yao: livelier than you might think
Looking at photos of Haad Yao, it's easy to assume it's a quiet beach where everyone goes to bed after sunset.
But that's not the whole picture.
By day Haad Yao is fairly relaxed, and in the evening the pubs fill up and there are parties.
It's a different atmosphere from Haad Rin, which is known for the Full Moon parties, but there's definitely an evening scene here.
For us, it's one of the things that makes Haad Yao a pleasant place to spend a few days.
You can enjoy the beach during the day, watch a beautiful sunset and then head out for a drink or a night out.
What we saw in the evenings
The bars and parties we saw were on the beach itself, not on the street behind the hotels. Some of the hotels along the beach had bars, and parties were held in them.
Near the end of an easy path that leads from the area behind the beach down to the sand, we heard electronic music with a DJ every evening, and a small party took place there. We remember the music and the atmosphere well. How late it went on, we don't know: we didn't stay up late enough to find out.
This is our experience from February 2025. Parties like these change with the season and the time of year, so there's no promise you'll find them every evening.
The bottom line: Haad Yao suits anyone who wants a pleasant, relaxed beach by day and the option of going out in the evening, without the huge-party vibe of Haad Rin.
Should you stay right next to the pubs?
It depends on your style of holiday.
If you like going out in the evening and want to be close to the action, the location can be an advantage.
If you're sensitive to noise and prefer an early night, check exactly where the hotel is in relation to the bars and the places where parties are held. Because the bars we saw were on the beach, bear in mind that a front-row room facing the sea may be closer to the music.
Even within the same area there can be big differences between a hotel close to a nightlife spot and one that is further away.
12What is there to do near Haad Yao?
Haad Yao suits anyone who wants to combine a beach holiday with short trips to other places in north-west Koh Phangan.
Haad Salad
Haad Salad is another beach in the north-west of the island, not far from Haad Yao.
It's good for a daytime visit, especially if you want to see another bay and vary your beach days.
Haad Son
Haad Son is also in the area, and it's known among other things for its bay and the view.
You can fit it into a short visit, depending on access and the weather.
Srithanu
Srithanu is an area with a slightly different character, associated among other things with yoga, workshops, cafes and a community of travellers who come for longer stays.
If you like cafes and a slightly different atmosphere from a holiday beach, it's worth getting to know too.
Mae Haad & Koh Ma
Mae Haad is further north, and it's known for the sandbar that, at the right tide, links it to the small island of Koh Ma.
It's one of the most interesting places in north-west Koh Phangan, especially for anyone who loves seascapes and snorkelling.
Check the sea conditions and the tides before you go.
13Do you need a scooter in Haad Yao?
Not necessarily, but it depends on where your hotel is and how you plan to get around.
If you're staying close to the beach and mainly want to enjoy the sea and the nearby restaurants and cafes, you can manage on foot some of the time.
But Koh Phangan is a hilly island, and even a distance that looks short on the map can involve steep climbs, descents and roads without proper pavements.
If you want to get to other beaches, the markets or Thong Sala, you'll need transport.
Scooters are a common option on the island, but we don't recommend hiring one without suitable riding experience. The roads can be steep, winding and slippery in the rain.
If you're not a confident rider, you're better off using taxis or shuttles.
14How to get to Haad Yao
Most travellers arrive on Koh Phangan by ferry and get off at Thong Sala.
From there you can carry on to Haad Yao by taxi or shuttle.
How long the drive takes depends on the traffic, the weather and exactly where your hotel is, but it's usually a fairly short ride compared with getting to the remote beaches in the north-east of the island.
If you're arriving with suitcases, check in advance whether your accommodation offers a pick-up from the pier.
15When is the best time to visit Haad Yao?
As elsewhere on Koh Phangan, the weather can vary a great deal through the year and even within a single day.
Some months bring a higher chance of rain, but even in rainier periods there can be beautiful sunny days.
If you're planning a holiday built mainly around the sea, the pool and sunsets, check the weather patterns for the season you're travelling in.
It's especially worth remembering that a short tropical shower is nothing like a day of heavy, persistent rain.
When it rains hard for hours, a lot of beach activities are simply less enjoyable.
On the other hand, Haad Yao has restaurants and cafes that make a pleasant alternative to sitting on the beach.
What about the tides?
This is one of the most important things to check if you're coming mainly to swim.
On shallow beaches like Haad Yao, low tide can make a real difference to swimming.
If you're planning a long stay, think of it as part of the beach's character rather than a one-off problem.
16Haad Yao or Thong Nai Pan: which is the better base?
Both areas are very beautiful, but they offer a different kind of holiday.
| Haad Yao | Thong Nai Pan | |
|---|---|---|
| Location | North-west Koh Phangan | North-east Koh Phangan |
| Character | Beach, cafes and an evening scene | Beaches and resorts with a relaxed feel |
| Nightlife | Pubs and parties | Mostly relaxed evenings in restaurants and bars |
| Swimming | Strongly affected by low tide | In many parts less affected by shallow low tides |
| Sunsets | A real highlight | The beaches face north-east |
| Getting around | Fairly easy for visiting nearby west-coast beaches | More remote from the rest of the island |
| Accommodation | A wide range of places | Indulgent resorts alongside simpler options |
| Best for | Those who want a beach with restaurants and nightlife | Those who want a beach-and-resort holiday |
We love both areas, but Haad Yao is one of the places on Koh Phangan we connected with most.
If we wanted to combine a beautiful beach, cafes, restaurants, sunsets and an evening scene, we'd choose Haad Yao.
If we wanted a few days of indulgent resort holiday, with less need to go out and about, we'd look at Thong Nai Pan Noi.
17How many nights should you spend in Haad Yao?
In our view, three to five nights is a good start if you want to get to know the area.
That gives you time to enjoy the beach, watch a few sunsets, try the restaurants and cafes and fit in a visit to nearby beaches.
But if you love the atmosphere and want to settle in one place for longer, Haad Yao works very well for a long stay too.
We ourselves spent a week at Long Bay, so for us the area is not just a quick stop on the way to the next beach.
18The pros and cons of Haad Yao
Pros
- A beautiful beach with impressive sunsets.
- A wide range of places to stay, from bungalows to resorts.
- Cafes, restaurants and shops nearby.
- A lively evening scene, including pubs and parties.
- Fairly close to other beaches in north-west Koh Phangan.
- Works for a stay of a few days and for a longer holiday.
Cons
- Low tide can make the water very shallow and limit swimming.
- The area isn't completely quiet at night, especially near the nightlife spots.
- Some places to stay are up hills or a less convenient walk from the beach.
- Room quality and maintenance vary between hotels.
- If you want to visit a different side of the island every day, you'll still need transport.
19Haad Yao FAQ
Which hotel did you like best in Haad Yao?
Baan Kiao is one of our strongest recommendations, not just in the Haad Yao area but from the whole trip. We especially loved the service, the personal attention and the staff, and we'd definitely go back.
Is Haad Yao a quiet beach?
During the day the atmosphere is usually relaxed, but in the evening there are pubs and parties. The party scene is nothing like Haad Rin's, but it isn't a completely quiet beach.
Can you swim at Haad Yao?
Yes, in the right sea and tide conditions. At low tide the water can be very shallow, so check the sea before you go in.
Is Haad Yao good for families?
It can suit families, especially if you choose a comfortable place to stay away from the noisier spots. Check the swimming conditions and beach access as well.
Is Long Bay Resort worth it?
Our room in the new building was stunning, and the price we paid in February 2025 was excellent. However, insects appeared every night during the week we stayed there. So it's a recommendation with a caveat, and it's worth checking recent reviews.
Did you stay at High Life?
No. We visited and liked the location and the view, but we didn't stay there. It's one of the places we'd consider on our next visit.
Should you stay in Haad Yao or Srithanu?
Haad Yao is especially good for anyone looking for a beautiful beach, sunsets, restaurants and an evening scene. Srithanu has a different atmosphere, with the emphasis on cafes, yoga and a community of travellers. The choice depends on your style of holiday.
Do you have to hire a scooter?
No. You can get around the beach area on foot and use taxis for longer trips. If you have no riding experience, Koh Phangan's hilly roads are not the place to learn.
20Our bottom line: why did we love Haad Yao so much?
Koh Phangan has impressive beaches, luxury resorts and bays that look as if they've stepped out of a postcard.
But Haad Yao is one of the places where we felt the holiday was about more than just a beautiful beach.
We loved being able to sit facing the sea, enjoy the sunsets, go to a cafe in the morning and go out in the evening.
We also loved that there's a range of places to stay here, and you don't have to pick a luxury resort to enjoy the area.
Staying at several hotels taught us how much choosing the right one matters.
At Baan Kiao we were given the kind of attention and service that made it one of our strongest recommendations from the whole trip. At Long Bay we enjoyed a beautiful room at a great price, but had to deal with an insect problem that came back every evening. At Bayview we stayed one night, and at High Life we only visited - and it remains one of the options we'd like to try in the future.
These were very different experiences, and they're all part of the reason we don't like recommending hotels on the strength of photos or ratings alone.
If you're looking for a beautiful beach on Koh Phangan with sunsets, restaurants, cafes and an evening scene, Haad Yao is one of the first areas we'd recommend checking out.
Just remember two things: low tide affects swimming, and the area is lively at night too.
If both of those suit your style of holiday, there's a good chance you'll fall for it just as we did.
