LA VIDA Samui is a four-star boutique hotel right on Chaweng Beach in Koh Samui. With 49 rooms, suites and villas, a pool surrounded by greenery and direct beach access, it offers a more intimate stay than the island's big resorts. Its location is particularly good: in the northern, relatively quiet part of Chaweng, yet still within walking distance of restaurants, shops and nightspots. The main drawback is that the entry-level rooms are fairly small, and the beach in front of the hotel is affected by the tides, so it is not always easy to swim from it.
LA VIDA Samui - a small hotel with an excellent location
Chaweng is one of Koh Samui's central areas, with a long beach, restaurants, bars, shops and shopping centres. It particularly suits anyone who likes to combine a beach holiday with being able to head out of the hotel and get around on foot.
LA VIDA Samui is in the northern part of Chaweng Beach, in a location that gives you the best of both worlds.
On the one hand, the hotel sits right on the beach, with a pool, sun loungers and a sea view. On the other, central Chaweng is within walking distance, so you do not need to call a taxi every time you want to go out for a meal or shopping.
The property is relatively small, with just 49 units. The rooms and villas are scattered among tropical gardens, with the pool and the restaurant towards the beach.

The design combines natural colours, wooden floors, modern furniture and floral touches inspired by Koh Samui's vegetation.
The atmosphere is pleasant and informal, with the feel of a boutique hotel rather than a giant resort.
The location - relative quiet without cutting yourself off from Chaweng
One of LA VIDA's standout advantages is its location.
The hotel is on Chaweng's beach road, about a kilometre from the Central Samui shopping centre.
Within walking distance are Thai and international restaurants, cafés, shops, massage places and bars.
If you like to head out in the evening, pick a restaurant on a whim and wander among the shops, you will find this a particularly convenient location.
And that is not something to take for granted in Koh Samui.
The island has beautiful resorts in quiet bays or secluded areas, but they mean a drive almost every time you leave the hotel.
At LA VIDA you can enjoy a beach holiday without feeling confined to the property.
Is the hotel close to the nightlife?
Yes, but it is not in the noisiest part of central Chaweng.
The Green Mango club is about 850 metres away, and the Central Samui shopping centre is about a kilometre away.
Being this close lets you go out in the evening and walk back, while the hotel itself keeps a calmer atmosphere.
That said, Chaweng's main road is very busy, with cars and motorbikes in the evening. In some sections the pavements are not particularly comfortable to walk on.
If you are looking for complete quiet and rural surroundings, Chaweng itself is not necessarily the right choice. But if you want a beach, restaurants and shopping, it is one of the most convenient areas on the island.
The rooms - pleasant design, but choose the right size
LA VIDA offers six main categories of rooms, suites and villas.
The differences between them are significant, especially in terms of room size, view and closeness to the sea.
The rooms are designed in a modern style with natural tones, wooden details and floral motifs. Most have a balcony or outdoor seating area, as well as air conditioning, a TV, a fridge, a kettle and coffee-making facilities.
But before you book, it is worth looking at the room size and not just the photos.
Deluxe Room - a 26 sq m double
This is the hotel's entry-level category.
The room has a double bed or two singles, a private bathroom and a balcony overlooking the tropical garden.
The design is pleasant and the room is well equipped, but 26 sq m is not particularly large.
For a couple planning to spend most of their time on the beach and by the pool, it may be quite enough.
On the other hand, if you are coming for a long stay with several suitcases, like roomy rooms or need a lot of storage space, you may find the room cramped.
This is one of the recurring drawbacks of the hotel's entry-level categories: the rooms are comfortable and clean, but storage space is limited.
Seaview Deluxe - the same size, with a sea view
The Seaview Deluxe rooms are also 26 sq m, but they face Chaweng Beach and the Gulf of Thailand.
The advantage is the view, not extra space.
If you are torn between a regular Deluxe room and a Seaview Deluxe, ask yourself how much the view matters to you.
If you plan to sit on the balcony and enjoy the sea, the extra cost may be worth it. If you will spend most of the day out of the room, the entry-level category may be enough.
Villa Portia - a 36 sq m villa for two
Villa Portia offers more space, with floral design, large windows and green surroundings.
It is a good option if you want a bit more privacy and space than a regular hotel room.
The villa is designed for two guests and can particularly suit couples who prefer a separate unit rather than a room in a main wing.
Sea Breeze Villa - very close to the beach
The Sea Breeze Villa is a 45 sq m villa just a few steps from the beach.
The main advantage is being close to the sea while having more space.
It is an interesting category for couples looking for an intimate stay who want to enjoy the beach and the tropical atmosphere without compromising on room size.
The villa can also suit two adults plus an extra guest, depending on the booking terms.
Seaview Suite - a spacious suite with a beach view
The Seaview Suite is 56 sq m, almost double the size of the entry-level rooms.
The extra space and the sea view make it a good choice if you plan to stay a few nights and want a room that is pleasant to spend time in during the day too.
It suits couples looking for more comfort or a small family, depending on the bed configuration and the terms of the stay.
Beachfront Pool Villa - a villa with a private pool
This is the most luxurious category at LA VIDA.
The villa covers a total of 173 sq m, including the outdoor space, and offers a private plunge pool, a view of the bay and direct access to the sandy beach.
It is a very different experience from the regular rooms.
The main advantage is being able to enjoy a private pool and closeness to the sea, along with privacy and a lot of space.
For couples planning a particularly romantic break, this is the most interesting category in the hotel, but also one of the most expensive.
The pool - one of the most pleasant spots in the hotel
LA VIDA's pool is set between the tropical gardens and the beach.

Around it there are sun loungers, parasols and seating corners, and the atmosphere particularly suits anyone who wants to spend much of the day in the water or with a book by the pool.
Unlike the giant pools of family resorts, this is a swimming area that better fits the intimate scale of the property.
The advantage is the relatively relaxed feel and the closeness to the sea.
You can move between the pool and the beach, sit with a drink and enjoy the atmosphere without going far from the hotel.
In some parts of the pool area you can also order drinks from the bar.
At busy times the number of sun loungers may be limited relative to demand, so if you like to spend the whole day by the pool, it is worth bearing this in mind.
Chaweng Beach - beautiful, but the tides matter
LA VIDA is right on Chaweng Beach, one of the best-known beaches in Koh Samui.
The beach here is sandy, with palm trees and an open view of the Gulf of Thailand.

The big advantage is that you do not need to cross a road or walk for several minutes to reach the sea. You step out of the grounds and you are on the beach.
But there is an important detail worth knowing.
Low tide can affect swimming
In the northern part of Chaweng Beach the water can be very shallow at low tide.
When the sea recedes, you sometimes have to wade a considerable distance to reach a depth suitable for swimming.
There are times and seasons when the beach is great for sitting, sunbathing and walking, but less so for actual swimming.
This is not a problem unique to the hotel, but a feature of the beach's location and the tides.
If you are coming to Koh Samui mainly to swim in the sea, this matters.
On the other hand, you can enjoy the hotel pool, and in other parts of Chaweng swimming conditions may be more comfortable.
The beach is definitely one of LA VIDA's advantages, but it is worth choosing it knowing that the sea is not necessarily deep and comfortable for swimming at every hour.
Breakfast - facing the sea in a relaxed atmosphere
Breakfast at LA VIDA is served in the restaurant area, close to the beach.
The selection includes Western and Asian dishes, fruit, pastries, eggs cooked to order and hot drinks.
The setting is part of the experience: you can start the day facing the sea, in a much more pleasant atmosphere than an enclosed dining room.
Breakfast is well reviewed, mainly for the freshness of the dishes, the service and the atmosphere.
That said, the choice is not necessarily as large as at five-star hotels with hundreds of rooms.
This is one of the differences between a small boutique hotel and a big resort.
If you prefer a relaxed breakfast facing the sea to a vast buffet, it can be a good choice.
Lago restaurant - eating with a view of the beach
The hotel has Lago, a restaurant close to the beach that serves Thai and international dishes.
The setting particularly suits a light lunch or a dinner in a relaxed atmosphere.
The restaurant lets you enjoy a meal facing the sea without leaving the hotel.
Alongside it there are bar areas where you can order cocktails and drinks during the day.
But thanks to LA VIDA's central location, there is no need to rely on the hotel restaurant.
Within walking distance there are plenty of restaurants, from local Thai food to Italian restaurants, cafés and bars.
This is one of the hotel's significant advantages compared with more remote resorts on the island.
Cleanliness, upkeep and design
Cleanliness is one of the areas where LA VIDA stands out.
The rooms, gardens and public areas are well maintained, and the place keeps a pleasant, tidy look.
The design uses natural tones and wood, with floral touches that give the rooms character.
It is not particularly luxurious or dramatic design, but a calm style that suits the atmosphere of a tropical island.
However, there are differences between the categories.
The entry-level rooms are more compact, and in some of them storage space is not generous. The lighting in the bathrooms is not ideal in every unit either.
If you want a large room or are planning a long stay, it is worth considering one of the villas or suites.
Service - one of LA VIDA's strong points
Service at the hotel is one of its significant advantages.
The staff get particularly high scores on booking sites, thanks to their friendliness, availability and willingness to help.
Reception is open 24 hours a day, and you can arrange airport transfers and other services.
The personal feel suits the character of a small boutique hotel.
In a hotel with just 49 units, the relationship between guests and staff can be more direct and personal than at a big resort.
That is an advantage if you are looking for a relaxed stay where service is a significant part of the experience.
Gym and other facilities
LA VIDA has a gym, so you can keep up your training routine on holiday.
It is a relatively compact gym suited to a basic workout, not a large sports centre.
The hotel also offers seating areas in the garden, restaurant and bar services, and the option to arrange activities and tours.
If you are looking for a resort with water slides, a big children's playground or a wide range of entertainment facilities, you may prefer another hotel.
LA VIDA's strength lies precisely in its small scale and relaxed atmosphere.
Is the hotel good for families?
LA VIDA can suit small families, especially if you choose a more spacious suite or villa.
The pool and the direct beach access make it convenient for families who want a relaxed seaside holiday.
However, the 26 sq m entry-level rooms are less suitable for families who need a lot of space, a cot and extra equipment.
The fact that the hotel is not a big family resort with a kids' club and a range of activities is also a consideration.
For families who prefer a big room, a pool and a relaxed atmosphere, a Seaview Suite or a villa may suit them better.
It is important to check the room occupancy and bed configuration in advance.
Is LA VIDA good for couples?
Yes, especially for couples who like small hotels with direct beach access.
The pleasant design, the tropical gardens, the restaurant facing the sea and the option of heading out to Chaweng in the evening make a good combination for a holiday for two.
For a more romantic experience, the villas and suites offer more space and privacy.
The Beachfront Pool Villa particularly suits those who want a private pool facing the sea.
But a regular double room can also work, especially if you plan to spend most of the day out.
Is the hotel good for women travelling solo?
One of LA VIDA's advantages is its location within walking distance of restaurants, shops and nightspots.
For a woman travelling alone who does not want to hire a scooter, being able to walk out of the hotel and explore a lively area is a significant advantage.
The property itself is relatively quiet and has a reception desk that is staffed around the clock.
However, Chaweng's streets are busy with traffic, so it is worth choosing well-lit walking routes and taking particular care where there is no proper pavement.
What is less good about LA VIDA Samui?
Despite its many advantages, there are a few drawbacks worth bearing in mind.
The size of the entry-level rooms: 26 sq m may be enough for a couple, but less so if you are looking for a particularly spacious room.
Limited storage space: some rooms do not have much space for suitcases and clothes.
Swimming conditions in the sea: at low tide the water in front of the hotel can be very shallow.
Price: the hotel is not necessarily one of the cheaper options in Chaweng, especially in high season.
A busy urban setting: although the property itself is relatively calm, Chaweng's main road is busy and has nightlife.
Relatively limited facilities: if you are looking for a big resort with several pools and children's facilities, you may prefer somewhere else.
LA VIDA compared with Chaweng's big hotels
One of LA VIDA's advantages is its size.
With just 49 units, the hotel offers a more intimate experience than resorts with hundreds of rooms.
The distances between the rooms, the pool and the beach are relatively short, and the property is easy to find your way around.
For couples and travellers who prefer a relaxed atmosphere, that can be a big advantage.
On the other hand, big hotels sometimes offer more restaurants, more pools and more spacious family rooms.
The choice depends on your style of holiday.
If you are looking for a big resort where you can spend whole days without leaving, Koh Samui has other options.
If you are looking for a boutique hotel on the beach and also want to explore Chaweng, LA VIDA offers a particularly interesting combination.
Who is LA VIDA Samui best for?
Couples: a boutique hotel with a relaxed atmosphere, beach access and romantic accommodation options.
Anyone looking for a hotel on the sea: you step out of the grounds straight onto Chaweng Beach.
Travellers who do not want to hire a vehicle: restaurants, shops and nightspots are within walking distance.
Anyone who prefers a small hotel: 49 rooms, suites and villas instead of a big, crowded resort.
A holiday that mixes rest and going out: you can spend the day at the pool and on the beach and head out to central Chaweng in the evening.
Who should choose another hotel?
LA VIDA is less suitable for families looking for a resort with a water park and a big kids' club.
It is also less suitable if you need a particularly large room and are planning to book the entry-level category.
If you dream of a beach where you can walk straight into deep water and swim at any time of day, the low-tide conditions in the area may be a drawback.
And if you are looking for a holiday in a completely secluded, quiet area, far from the shops and nightlife, you may prefer one of Koh Samui's other bays.
Is LA VIDA Samui good value for money?
Value for money depends mainly on the room type and what you are looking for on holiday.
The hotel's big advantage is its location: direct beach access, a pool, a restaurant facing the sea and the chance to walk to restaurants and shops.
For travellers who would rather not hire a vehicle, that has real value.
The cleanliness and the service also add to the experience.
On the other hand, if you book an entry-level Deluxe room, you are paying for the location, the atmosphere and the facilities, not for a particularly large room.
So it is worth comparing the price of the entry-level room with the prices of the villas and suites. Sometimes the extra cost can justify the extra space, especially over a stay of several nights.
The bottom line - should you book LA VIDA Samui?
LA VIDA Samui is a good boutique hotel in Chaweng, mainly thanks to its location, atmosphere and service.
It manages to combine a relaxed beach holiday with easy access to restaurants, shops and nightspots.
The property is small, pleasant and well kept, the pool is close to the sea, and the rooms are designed in a natural style that suits the feel of Koh Samui.
The main drawbacks are the size of the entry-level rooms and the variable swimming conditions on the beach.
For couples and travellers looking for a boutique hotel on Chaweng Beach, with the option of walking out in the evening and coming back to a relatively quiet property, LA VIDA Samui is definitely worth considering. If you prefer a particularly spacious room, look at the villas and suites rather than settling for the Deluxe category.
