Baan Chaweng Beach Resort & Spa is a resort right on Chaweng Beach in Koh Samui, with rooms and villas set in tropical gardens, a swimming pool and a restaurant facing the sea. The hotel's big advantage is that it combines a real beach holiday with a central location: you walk out of the grounds onto the sand, and on the other side are Chaweng's shops, restaurants and nightlife. Unlike the island's large, modern resorts, the atmosphere here is more intimate, with low-rise buildings, garden paths and classic Thai design. The main drawbacks are the traditional decor, which is not especially new, the differences between room categories and a fairly limited range of facilities compared with luxury hotels.

Baan Chaweng - a tropical resort in the heart of the tourist area

Chaweng is one of the most popular areas of Koh Samui, and not by chance. The long sandy beach, the restaurants, the shops and the nightlife make for a varied holiday without spending a lot of time travelling.

Baan Chaweng Beach Resort & Spa is in a spot that makes the most of all this.

The hotel entrance faces Chaweng's main street, but inside the grounds the atmosphere changes. The buildings are spread among lawns, palm trees and tropical planting, and paths lead from the guest rooms towards the pool and the beach.

This is not a hotel with a tall building and long corridors. Some rooms are in low-rise blocks and others in separate villas, so it feels more like a small holiday village.

The design combines wood, natural tones and traditional Thai details. It is not minimalist or especially cutting-edge, but it sits beautifully in the tropical setting.

One of the things that makes the place special is the feeling that you get the best of both worlds: you are in the heart of Chaweng, yet you spend most of the day in a green garden and on the beach.

The location - a few minutes from Central Samui and the evening scene

The hotel is at 90/1 Moo 2, in central Chaweng.

The Central Samui shopping centre is about a five-minute walk away, and restaurants, cafes, massage places and convenience stores are all close by.

For travellers who do not want to hire a scooter, that is a significant advantage.

You can head out of the hotel in the evening, pick a restaurant and browse the shops without arranging transport.

And if you like to mix lazy beach days with shopping, you will find this an especially convenient base.

Is the location noisy?

Chaweng is a very lively area, especially in the evening.

Even so, many of the rooms are inside the garden grounds, some distance from the main street.

This inner position helps create a fairly calm atmosphere, and the hotel gets a lot of praise for letting you enjoy being close to the centre without feeling you are in the thick of it all the time.

That said, in rooms closer to the street, or when events are held on the beach, you may hear noise.

If quiet at night matters to you, it is better to choose a room facing the garden rather than the busy areas.

The rooms and villas - which type of stay to choose?

Baan Chaweng offers eight categories of rooms, villas and suites.

The differences between them come down mainly to position within the grounds, size, view and distance from the beach.

The rooms combine Thai design with modern amenities: air conditioning, a private bathroom, a balcony or terrace, a fridge and tea and coffee facilities.

But choosing the right category will make a big difference to your holiday.

Superior Building - a comfortable room in the garden

This is one of the hotel's entry-level categories.

The rooms are in the hotel building and cover about 38 sq m, with views of the tropical gardens.

They have a double bed or two singles, a bathroom and an outdoor seating area.

It is a good option for couples who would rather spend their money on the beach, restaurants and trips than on a particularly luxurious room.

The main drawback is that it is a room in a shared building rather than a private villa, and the design is simpler than in the upgraded categories.

Deluxe Building - a room with a balcony on a higher floor

Deluxe Building rooms are on a higher floor of the building, with a private balcony facing the garden.

Their advantage is being able to sit on the balcony and enjoy a more open view over the grounds.

It is a good choice if you prefer a room in a main building but want a pleasant private outdoor space.

It is important to distinguish between a Deluxe Building room and a Deluxe Villa: the two categories offer a different experience.

Deluxe Villa - a villa in the tropical garden

The Deluxe Villa category offers a unit of about 40 sq m, with a private balcony and a seating area.

The villas are scattered among the greenery and feel more intimate than a room in the main building.

The advantage is stepping straight out into the garden and the atmosphere of a tropical holiday village.

The room suits couples who prefer to stay on the ground floor and want to sit outside without going through hotel corridors.

Executive Room - a spacious ground-floor room

Executive rooms are on the ground floor and have a terrace overlooking the garden.

It is a convenient option if you prefer direct access to the grounds without having to go up to higher floors.

The rooms suit couples looking for a little more space and comfort, while staying close to the garden paths.

Executive Villa - a private villa in the middle of the grounds

The Executive Villas are in the garden, with a private balcony and an outdoor seating area.

They give more of a sense of a separate unit within the resort.

Their position gives fairly easy access to the beach and the Talay restaurant, and they suit people who want to be close to the facilities but not stay in the main building.

It is an interesting option for a relaxed couple's holiday.

Grand Deluxe Villa - close to the pool and the beach

This is one of the most interesting categories in the hotel.

The villas are near the pool, with a balcony from which you can reach the pool area in a few steps.

Grand Deluxe Villa rooms are about 48 sq m and offer more space than the standard Deluxe rooms.

The big advantage is the location.

If you plan to spend many hours at the pool and on the beach, being close to them can make a difference to your everyday comfort.

Remember that this means being close to a shared pool, not having a private pool attached to the villa.

Junior Suite - a spacious suite for couples and families

The Junior Suites offer a larger room with a seating area, a private balcony and a bathroom with a separate bath and shower.

They suit couples who prefer extra space, or families who need a more comfortable room.

It is a particularly good option for a stay of several nights, when you want it to be pleasant to spend time in the room as well as on the beach.

Beachfront Suite - the suite facing the sea

This is one of the most sought-after room categories in the hotel.

The suite is on the beachfront and offers an open sea view and a private balcony.

The advantage is being able to enjoy the sea without even leaving your room.

If you are looking for a particularly romantic holiday, or want to wake up to a view of the Gulf of Thailand, this is the most interesting category.

The price difference compared with a standard room mainly reflects the location and the view.

The beach - one of Baan Chaweng's significant advantages

When reviewing hotels in Chaweng, it is important to distinguish between a hotel that is on the beach and a hotel that is on a stretch of beach that is good for swimming.

The difference is significant.

In the northern part of Chaweng, for example, the water can be very shallow, and at low tide it is harder to reach a depth you can swim in.

At Baan Chaweng, which is on a more central part of the beach, swimming conditions are usually easier.

This stretch has soft, pale sand and clear water when the weather allows.

Many guests appreciate being able to get into the water and swim, not just sit facing the sea.

The hotel's stretch of beach is also well kept, with sunbathing areas set aside for guests.

A beach that also suits a lazy day

One of Baan Chaweng's advantages is that you can spend a whole day almost without leaving the grounds.

You can start the morning with breakfast facing the sea, move to a sun lounger, go into the water and end the day with dinner at the beach restaurant.

Direct access from the garden to the sand makes it all very easy.

That said, Chaweng is a public tourist beach, and at certain times there are boats, water sports and other visitors in the area.

Sea conditions also change with the season and the weather.

The pool - between the garden and the beach

The hotel pool is in the area close to the beach, surrounded by greenery and sun loungers.

The design is fairly simple, with no dramatic infinity edge or large water features.

But its position is especially convenient: you can move from the pool to the beach or the restaurant without going far.

If you like to mix swimming in the pool with swimming in the sea, that is a big plus.

The atmosphere around the pool is fairly calm, and suits couples and families who want to spend a few hours by the water.

That said, if you are looking for a resort with several pools, waterslides and children's activities, you will find other options on Koh Samui.

Breakfast - with a sea view

Breakfast is served in the Talay restaurant area, next to the beach.

It includes a selection of Western and Thai dishes, eggs, tropical fruit, pastries, hot dishes and drinks.

The setting is one of its big advantages: instead of sitting in an enclosed dining room, you start the day facing the sea.

Breakfast gets positive reviews, especially for the quality of the food, the service and the view.

The choice suits a mid-sized resort rather than a huge hotel with dozens of food stations.

If you like a relaxed breakfast by the beach, it is one of the nicest experiences here.

Talay restaurant - Thai food facing the beach

The Talay Restaurant is one of Baan Chaweng's draws.

The restaurant is right on the beach and serves Thai dishes, international food, fish and seafood.

You can sit in the restaurant area and enjoy the view, or order food and drinks during the day.

In the evening the atmosphere changes, and the restaurant can also work for a romantic dinner facing the sea.

One of the advantages is convenience: you do not need to leave the hotel to enjoy a meal with a beach view.

On the other hand, Baan Chaweng's central location means you can try a different restaurant every evening.

The main street has a wide range of Thai restaurants, international restaurants and food stalls.

If you like variety on holiday, that is a significant advantage.

Rachavadee Spa - treatments in a tropical setting

The hotel has the Rachavadee Spa, which offers massages and body treatments.

The atmosphere combines greenery, natural materials and traditional elements, and suits anyone who wants to add a pampering treatment to their holiday.

It is a nice extra in a hotel that focuses mainly on the beach, the pool and a relaxed stay.

But you will not find the range of facilities and treatments of a large spa resort here.

Service and cleanliness - among the hotel's strong points

Service at Baan Chaweng scores particularly highly.

The staff get a lot of praise for their courtesy, their help with requests and their willingness to assist throughout the stay.

Cleanliness and the upkeep of the gardens and public areas are also rated positively.

The grounds look well tended, and the low-rise buildings and gardens create an intimate atmosphere.

This is one of the reasons the hotel also attracts returning guests, who appreciate the service and the personal feel.

Design and maintenance - classic, not cutting-edge

Baan Chaweng is a resort with traditional Thai character, not a new boutique hotel.

The rooms combine wooden furniture, warm tones and low-rise buildings set in the garden.

If you love classic tropical hotels, that is part of the charm.

But if you prefer rooms with minimalist design, huge windows and modern finishes, you may find the style a little dated.

There are also differences in fittings and design between room categories.

So look not only at the price but also at the category and the position of the unit.

Is Baan Chaweng good for couples?

Yes. It is one of the types of holiday the hotel particularly suits.

The tropical garden, the beach, the restaurant facing the sea and the option of going out in the evening to restaurants and bars make a very easy combination for a couple's holiday.

If you are looking for a particularly romantic stay, the Beachfront Suite can be a great choice.

For a couple who prefer to be close to the pool and the beach, the Grand Deluxe Villa is an interesting option.

The basic rooms can also work, especially if you plan to spend most of the day out of the room.

Is the hotel suitable for families?

Baan Chaweng can suit families who prefer a comfortable beach hotel to a huge resort.

The closeness to the beach, the pool and being able to walk to restaurants and shops are big advantages.

Some of the suites and larger rooms can also suit a small family, depending on the bed configuration and the permitted occupancy.

That said, there is no large kids' club, no waterslides and no wide range of organised activities.

For families who mainly want an easy beach, a pool and a central location, the hotel can be an excellent choice.

Families who prefer lots of facilities for children should compare it with larger family resorts on Koh Samui.

Is it good for women travelling solo?

The central location is a significant advantage if you are travelling on your own too.

You can walk to restaurants, shops and cafes without depending on a scooter or taxis every time you go out.

The grounds themselves are pleasant, with a garden and a pool, and let you enjoy an independent holiday without feeling isolated.

It is an easy combination of a beach hotel and closeness to the tourist life of Chaweng.

The downsides - what you need to know before booking

The design is not especially new: this is a resort in traditional Thai style, not a modern, minimalist hotel.

No private pools: even the villas focus on the garden, the view and closeness to the beach, not on a pool of your own.

Fairly limited facilities: there is a pool and a spa, but not a wide range of leisure facilities and activities.

A central, lively location: being close to the shops and nightlife can come with some noise from the surroundings at times.

Differences between room categories: a room in the main building offers a different experience from a villa in the garden or a suite facing the sea.

Pricing: the excellent beachfront location is reflected in the price, even when the room itself is not particularly luxurious.

Baan Chaweng compared with other hotels in Chaweng

Each of Chaweng's hotels has different strengths.

SALA Samui Chaweng particularly suits people looking for modern luxury design and suites with a private pool.

Sareeraya Villas & Suites offers very large rooms and options with a private pool or direct pool access.

Muang Samui Spa Resort offers large suites with a jacuzzi and rich traditional Thai design.

Dara Samui Beach Resort is also centrally located and offers a traditional atmosphere and spacious rooms, but the beach in front is less suited to swimming.

LA VIDA Samui is a smaller, more modern boutique hotel in north Chaweng, with fairly compact entry-level rooms.

Baan Chaweng stands out mainly for its combination of a beach that is easier to swim from, a central location and a tropical garden.

It suits people who want a classic Thai resort experience, not necessarily the newest or most luxurious hotel on the island.

Is Baan Chaweng good value for money?

The hotel's significant advantage is not so much the room size or the level of luxury as the location.

Being able to stay right on the beach, in an area where swimming conditions are fairly easy, and walk to restaurants and shops is a big plus.

The service, the cleanliness and the well-kept garden also add to the value.

On the other hand, the price can be high for rooms with traditional design and facilities that are not especially new.

So it is worth comparing the prices of the Superior and Deluxe rooms with those of the villas and suites.

For a short stay where you spend most of the day out, a fairly simple room may be enough.

For a longer holiday where you plan to spend a lot of time in the room, however, consider a roomier category.

The bottom line - should you book Baan Chaweng Beach Resort & Spa?

Baan Chaweng Beach Resort & Spa is a resort with classic Thai character, a tropical garden, a pool, a restaurant facing the sea and one of the most convenient locations in Chaweng.

Its big advantage is combining a beautiful beach where swimming conditions are easy with a tourist centre just a short walk away.

Service and cleanliness score highly, and the atmosphere within the grounds is fairly calm despite the central location.

The main drawbacks are the older design, the fairly limited range of facilities and a price that mainly reflects the sought-after location.

If you are looking for a hotel on Chaweng Beach where you can swim in the sea and walk out in the evening to restaurants and shops, Baan Chaweng is one of the more interesting options in the area. If you prefer modern design or a private pool, compare it with other hotels along the beach.
