Sareeraya Villas & Suites is a five-star hotel right on Chaweng Beach in Koh Samui, with 49 suites and villas, a swimming pool facing the sea and exceptionally spacious rooms. It sits in the northern, relatively quiet part of the beach, within walking distance of Chaweng's restaurants and shops. One of its big advantages is the choice between a 70 sq m suite with a balcony and sea view, a room that opens straight onto the pool, or a private villa with a plunge pool. Alongside the location and the space, though, bear in mind that the design and fittings are not particularly new, and that the prices reflect a luxury hotel even if some of the facilities are relatively simple.
Sareeraya Villas & Suites - a small hotel with big rooms
Chaweng is one of the most central and sought-after areas of Koh Samui. The long beach, the restaurants, the fashion shops and the nightlife make it a particularly convenient base for a holiday on the island.
But not every part of Chaweng has the same atmosphere.
Sareeraya Villas & Suites is in the northern part of the beach, in a relatively calm area away from the busiest nightlife spots.
The hotel has just 49 suites and villas, so the atmosphere is more intimate than at the big resorts.
The buildings are surrounded by tropical gardens and walkways, and the pool and the beach are at the far end of the grounds.

The design combines dark wooden furniture, wooden floors, natural tones and Asian-inspired details. It is different from the white, minimalist style of some of Koh Samui's new boutique hotels.
Here the emphasis is on space, comfort and a classic tropical resort atmosphere.
The location - on the beach, close to the centre but relatively quiet
One of Sareeraya's main advantages is its location.
The hotel is right on the beach, so you can go from the pool to the sand without crossing a road or leaving the grounds.
On the other hand, it is not cut off from Chaweng's tourist centre.
Restaurants, cafés, shops, massage places and nightspots are all within walking distance.
The hotel itself quotes a walk of about 15 minutes to central Chaweng, although the time depends on exactly where you are going.
It is a good combination if you want a relatively quiet hotel but do not want to rely on taxis every time you go out for dinner.
Is north Chaweng a good place to stay?
North Chaweng particularly suits travellers who prefer a calmer atmosphere but still want to stay close to the centre.
Parts of the beach are less crowded, and the hotels in the area are better suited to couples' holidays and to resting.
That said, the heart of the nightlife, some of the restaurants and the Central Samui shopping centre are further south.
If you like going out in the evening and walking back, the location can be convenient. If you would rather be right in the thick of things, you will find more central options along the beach.
Being close to Koh Samui airport is also an advantage: the drive is relatively short, although because it is so near you may occasionally hear planes in the area.
The rooms - 70 sq m even in the standard suite category
This is one of the most striking differences between Sareeraya and other boutique hotels in Chaweng.
While at some hotels the entry-level rooms are about 25-35 sq m, here the standard suites cover 70 sq m.
That space is especially noticeable over a stay of several nights.
There is enough room for a big bed, a seating area, luggage and a private balcony.
The rooms have air conditioning, a TV, a safe, a minibar, a seating area and a bathroom with both bath and shower.
But the differences between the categories matter: some rooms have sea views, others have pool access, and there are also villas with a private pool.
Sareeraya Suite - a large suite with a sea view
The entry-level category is the Sareeraya Suite, at 70 sq m.
The suites are on the second and third floors of the main buildings, with a private balcony looking out towards the sea.
You can choose between a king bed and two singles, depending on availability and the booking terms.
Inside there is a seating area and a large bathroom with both bath and shower.
This category is particularly well suited to anyone who wants a spacious room and a sea view without paying for a private pool.
Being on a higher floor means you get a more open view than from the ground-floor rooms.
Sareeraya Suite Pool Access - from the terrace into the pool
The Pool Access category is also 70 sq m, but it is on the ground floor.
The main difference is the outdoor terrace, which gives direct access to a shared pool.
This is a particularly good option if you like spending long hours in the water and want to get there without going through corridors or public areas.
The room itself is spacious, with a seating area, a big bed or two singles and a private bathroom.
However, it is important to distinguish between access to a shared pool and a private pool.
In this category the pool is also used by other guests, so the level of privacy is different from that of a villa.
The view from the room also varies depending on where it is. From some units you see the sea beyond the pool; from others you look mainly at the water and the grounds.
Sareeraya Suite Jacuzzi - a Jacuzzi on the balcony
The Jacuzzi suites are on the second and third floors, in the corner sections of the buildings.
Here too the room is 70 sq m, but the balcony has an outdoor Jacuzzi tub.
It is an interesting choice for couples who want a private soak with a view without booking a whole villa.
The suites have a king bed, a seating area and a large bathroom.
Compared with the Pool Access room, the emphasis here is on privacy on the balcony rather than direct access to a swimming pool.
Sareeraya Pool Villa - a private villa with a plunge pool
The pool villas are about 100 sq m and are designed mainly for couples.
Each villa has a private entrance, an outdoor seating area and a private plunge pool.
The villas are just a few steps from the beach and offer a more intimate experience than the suites in the main building.
The big advantage is being able to enjoy the space and the pool without sharing the area with other guests.
But it is important to distinguish between a plunge pool and a pool designed for swimming. The private pool is mainly for cooling off and relaxing in the water.
It is a good option for couples on a romantic break who would rather have privacy than a large pool next to their room.
Presidential Pool Villa - spacious accommodation for families and small groups
At the top of the range is the Presidential Pool Villa, a large unit with two bedrooms and a private pool.
It suits families or small groups who want to stay together, with separate bedrooms and shared living space.
It is a different kind of stay from the suites for two, mainly thanks to the space and the chance to combine family privacy with the hotel's facilities.
The main pool - right in front of the sea
Sareeraya's swimming pool is at the front of the grounds, facing Chaweng Beach.
The pool is designed with straight lines, with its edge facing the sea and sun loungers all around.

One of its advantages is the short distance between the pool and the beach.
You can spend time by the water, swim and move on to the beach without going far from the hotel.
Next to the pool there is a bar serving drinks and cocktails, and there is also a children's water area.
The atmosphere particularly suits couples, although at busy times the number of sun loungers may be limited.
This is not a giant pool with slides and entertainment, but a swimming area that fits well with the intimate character of the resort.
The beach - the advantage that justifies the location
Sareeraya sits right on Chaweng Beach, with direct access to the sand.

The beach in this area is partly wide and pleasant, and the water is usually calmer at the times of year when the weather is right for swimming.
You can walk along the shoreline, sit facing the sea or swim, depending on conditions.
The beach is one of the hotel's big advantages, especially if you want a seaside holiday and not just a pool holiday.
However, in north Chaweng the water depth can vary considerably with the tides.
At certain times the water is shallower, and in windy periods with waves the swimming conditions may change.
So it is worth treating the beach as a real advantage, but not assuming that swimming conditions will be the same every day and at every hour.
Breakfast - facing the beach
Breakfast is served at the Chef's Table restaurant, which faces the sea.
It includes a buffet with Western and Asian dishes, eggs cooked to order, tropical fruit, pastries and hot dishes.
One of its advantages is that you start the day in a pleasant, open space with a sea view.
Guests praise the quality of the food and the service, but some reviews also mention a relatively limited selection on some days.
This is a breakfast that fits the character of a small boutique hotel, not the vast dining room of a resort with hundreds of rooms.
If you like to start the morning at a leisurely pace facing the beach, the atmosphere is a significant part of the experience.
Chef's Table - the main restaurant
The Chef's Table restaurant serves Thai and international food, as well as fish and seafood.

Its beachfront setting works for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
You can sit in the restaurant area and enjoy the view and the relaxed atmosphere of the resort.
Next to it is Her Pool Bar, which serves drinks during the day, including a Happy Hour.
Prices at the hotel restaurant are higher than at some of Chaweng's local restaurants.
The advantage is convenience and the chance to have a meal facing the sea without leaving the grounds.
But because of where Sareeraya is, it is relatively easy to go out and eat at other restaurants in the area.
Service - one of the hotel's strong points
Service is one of the areas where Sareeraya receives particularly positive reviews.
The staff are friendly, help with practical arrangements and booking activities, and give the kind of personal attention that suits a small hotel.
Reception is open around the clock, and you can arrange airport transfers, tours and other services.
Cleanliness and general upkeep also receive high scores.
On a luxury holiday, service has a big effect on the experience. In this case it is one of the factors that balance out the reservations about the age of the design and the price.
Raya Spa and the gym
The hotel has the Raya Spa, which offers massages and body treatments.
The atmosphere is quiet and pleasant, with treatment rooms that suit anyone who wants to set aside time on holiday to rest and be pampered.
There is also a gym with equipment for basic workouts.
These facilities round out the stay, but they are not particularly large compared with sprawling five-star hotels.
Sareeraya is better suited to travellers looking for a spacious room, a pool, a beach and personal service, and less to those who want a resort with a huge range of leisure facilities.
Design and upkeep - upmarket, but not particularly new
This is one of the important things to understand before booking Sareeraya.
The rooms are large, comfortable and well equipped, but their style is not especially contemporary.
The dark furniture, the wood and the Asian details give the hotel a classic character, but in some rooms the feel is less modern compared with Koh Samui's new boutique hotels.

Some reviews also mention older furniture and small details that need a refresh.
This does not necessarily affect comfort, and the hotel gets very high cleanliness scores, but if you are looking for particularly polished, contemporary design it is something to consider.
If you like classic Asian-style hotels, you may actually prefer this atmosphere.
Is Sareeraya good for couples?
Definitely. Couples are one of the types of guest the hotel suits best.
The suites are large, the beach is right there, and the main pool faces the sea.
Couples looking for a romantic break can choose a suite with a Jacuzzi on the balcony or a villa with a private plunge pool.
Both options offer more privacy than a standard room, but the experience is different.
The Jacuzzi suite suits those who want a view, a balcony and an outdoor tub, while the pool villa is for those who prefer a private, separate space of their own.
Is the hotel good for families?
Sareeraya can suit families, but it is important to choose the right room type.
The large suites can sleep up to three guests, depending on the category terms, and some allow an extra bed for a fee.
The hotel also offers cots on request and connecting rooms in certain categories.
For larger families, the two-bedroom Presidential Villa can be a particularly good fit.
However, Sareeraya is not a big family resort with water slides and a large kids' club.
The private plunge pools also call for extra care when you are staying with young children.
For families who mainly want a big room and a beach, the hotel may be a good choice. For families looking for lots of activities for children, Koh Samui has more suitable options.
Should you choose a Pool Access room or a villa with a private pool?
This is one of the main dilemmas when booking Sareeraya.
A Pool Access room suits those who like stepping off the terrace into a shared pool. The pool is larger than the villa's plunge pool, and access is especially easy.
A villa with a private pool, on the other hand, gives a sense of privacy and the chance to enjoy the water without being in a public area.
If you like to swim, a Pool Access room may suit you better.
If you would rather relax in a private pool, enjoy the quiet and spend a lot of time in your room, the pool villa will be the more interesting choice.
The price is different too, so it is worth thinking about which option you will really use during your holiday.
The downsides - what to know before you book
Despite its advantages, there are a few reservations worth bearing in mind.
The design is not particularly new: the rooms are spacious and comfortable, but the furniture and style may feel a little dated if you prefer modern hotels.
Value for money: Sareeraya is priced as a five-star hotel, while some of its facilities are relatively small.
Distance from the centre: you can walk to restaurants and shops, but the heart of Chaweng is not right outside the hotel entrance.
Pool Access rooms: the level of privacy varies depending on where the room is, because the pool is shared.
The private plunge pools: they are mainly for relaxing in the water, not for swimming any distance.
Beach conditions: the water depth changes with the tides and the season.
Noise from outside: in some rooms you may hear road or traffic noise, despite the relatively calm atmosphere of the grounds.
Who is Sareeraya Villas & Suites best for?
Couples looking for a romantic break: spacious suites, the beach right there and the option of a private pool.
Anyone who likes big rooms: even the entry-level suite is 70 sq m.
Travellers who do not want to hire a vehicle: restaurants, shops and nightspots are within walking distance.
Anyone who prefers a small hotel: 49 units and a more intimate atmosphere than a big resort.
Beach holiday lovers: the main pool and the beach are right next to each other.
Who should choose another hotel?
Sareeraya is less suitable if you are looking for a hotel with cutting-edge, minimalist design.
It is also less suitable for families who want a water park, slides and a big kids' club.
If you want a hotel right in the middle of Chaweng's nightlife, a more central location may be more convenient.
And if you are on a limited budget, you will find cheaper hotels in the area, especially if a private pool and a large room are not top of your list.
Is Sareeraya good value for money?
The hotel's key advantages are its beachfront location, the size of the rooms and the personal service.
A 70 sq m suite is a real advantage, especially if you are planning a relatively long stay.
The choice between a room with pool access and a private villa also gives you flexibility in the style of holiday you go for.
On the other hand, the price is not low, and the design and facilities are not particularly new or innovative.
So the value is good mainly for those who appreciate space, privacy, service and a beachfront location.
If you are mainly after a room with contemporary design, it is worth comparing Sareeraya with newer boutique hotels in Chaweng too.
The bottom line - should you book Sareeraya Villas & Suites?
Sareeraya Villas & Suites is a pleasant, upmarket boutique hotel on the northern part of Chaweng Beach, with exceptionally large rooms, a pool facing the sea and a location that lets you combine a beach holiday with restaurants and shopping.
Its big advantage is space. Suites of 70 sq m make for a comfortable stay even in the entry-level categories, and the villas with private pools are particularly well suited to a romantic break.
Service and cleanliness get high scores, and the hotel manages to keep an intimate atmosphere despite being in a central tourist area.
The main drawbacks are design that is not particularly new and a high price relative to the size of the property and its facilities.
If you are looking for a spacious room, the beach on your doorstep and personal service, Sareeraya can be a very good choice. If you prefer particularly modern design or big-resort facilities, it is worth comparing it with other options in Chaweng.
