Simple beachfront bungalows at the quiet end of Sairee, with sunsets and a restaurant facing the sea - but mixed reviews on upkeep and value for money.

Bow Thong Beach Resort on Koh Tao has one of the island's more interesting locations: at the quiet northern end of Sairee Beach, with bungalows surrounded by tropical greenery and direct access to the sea. It offers a simple, relaxed holiday within walking distance of Sairee's restaurants and nightlife. But does the wonderful location make up for the basic rooms and the mixed reviews on upkeep and value for money?
This review is based on information about the hotel and on cross-checking reviews from guests who stayed there, mainly on Booking.com, Agoda and Tripadvisor.
One of the most interesting things about choosing a hotel on Koh Tao is that two hotels on the same beach can offer completely different stays.
Sairee Beach is the island's tourist centre. Along it are cafés, restaurants, bars, dive centres and nightlife. In its central stretches the atmosphere is young and lively, and the music can go on into the night.
Bow Thong Beach Resort is in the northern part of the beach, in a calmer area.

That is a real advantage if you want Sairee's convenience without sleeping right in the middle of the nightlife.
Many guests speak well of the quiet, the closeness to the sea and being able to walk to restaurants and bars.
That said, it is important to understand that this is not a completely secluded hotel. It is still in a tourist area, and getting to the central parts of Sairee takes a bit of a walk.
If you want to step out of your room straight into the heart of the shops and bars, you may prefer a more central location.
But for a couple looking for somewhere relatively calm without being far from the beach and the restaurants, the location can work very well.
Bow Thong is not a hotel of long corridors, lifts and a grand lobby.
The accommodation is in bungalows and fairly small buildings set in green surroundings close to the beach.

That is part of the charm.
Instead of a town-hotel feel, you get the atmosphere of a long-established tropical resort, with paths, greenery and verandas where you can sit outside.
There is something very appealing about waking up in the morning, stepping out of your bungalow and being a short walk from the sea.
But it is also important to set your expectations.
The photos and reviews suggest the rooms are not designed in a particularly luxurious or modern style.
In some bungalows the furniture is simple, the design fairly traditional and the finish not on a par with newer, more upmarket hotels.
Guests who like this character describe a calm, pleasant holiday.
Others feel the rooms are too dated for the price.
So before you book, ask yourself what matters more to you: a new, designer hotel, or a simple bungalow in an excellent beachfront location.
Booking sites list several room categories, including garden-view bungalows and sea-view bungalows.
For example, Agoda lists a Superior Bungalow of about 32 m², alongside a Deluxe Sea View Bungalow category.
But we wouldn't rely on the category name alone.
Check the photos of the specific room, its size, the state of the bathroom, where the bungalow is and the view from the veranda.
The mixed reviews on upkeep make this check all the more important.
One of the hotel's big advantages is its beachfront location.

Guests who stayed in sea-facing bungalows describe sitting on the veranda and watching the sunset as one of the highlights of their stay.
And that is an experience that can be worth paying extra for, especially on a couple's holiday.
On the other hand, check what "Sea View" actually means for the room you choose.
Can you see the sea directly from the veranda? Is the bungalow close to the beach? Do trees or other buildings block part of the view?
Not every room in a beachfront compound necessarily offers the same view.
If the sea view is the main reason you are choosing this hotel, confirm it before you book.
If there is one theme that comes up consistently in the positive reviews of Bow Thong, it is the location.
The hotel is near the northern end of Sairee Beach, in an area many guests describe as quieter than the central stretch.
You can enjoy the beach, sit facing the sea and watch the sunsets without necessarily being surrounded by the buzz of the bars.

Sairee Beach faces west, so sunsets are a big part of any visit here.
Reviews of the hotel especially mention the view and being able to enjoy the sunset from the beach or from the verandas of the sea-facing bungalows.
Bear in mind that Sairee Beach is fairly shallow in many places.
Swimming conditions are affected by the tides, and some spots have rocks, coral and boats.
So don't assume every point along the beach is equally good for swimming.
Some guests report pleasant snorkelling near the beach, but if snorkelling is your main goal on Koh Tao, compare it with other bays on the island too.
Bow Thong's advantage is not just being able to get into the water, but the combination of a beachfront location, a relaxed atmosphere and easy access to Sairee.
This is one of the things to know before you book.
Bow Thong is not marketed as a resort with a pool complex, and a swimming pool is not listed among its main facilities on booking sites.
So if you are looking for a hotel with an indulgent pool to spend hours by, we wouldn't choose Bow Thong without first checking which facilities are available today.
Here the main attraction is the beach itself.
If you prefer to sit facing the sea and spend most of your time on the beach, you may be very happy here.
If the pool is a central part of your holiday, you may find better options on Koh Tao.
The compound has a restaurant serving Thai food and Western dishes.

According to the information on booking sites, it is also open during the day, so guests can eat without leaving the hotel.
Reviews include positive comments about the food and about being able to sit right by the beach.
Some guests describe tasty food and reasonable prices, along with the obvious advantage of a meal facing the sea.
We stopped there for lunch when we visited: fried rice and a glass of white wine, facing the sea. It was lovely sitting there on a wooden deck overlooking the water. The food was very good, and the price entirely reasonable.

The restaurant is very close to the beautiful Rim Lae restaurant, and the stretch of beach there is very striking and quiet.
Check whether the rate you book includes breakfast and what is actually served.
And even if you choose to eat outside the hotel, the Sairee location puts a wide range of cafés and restaurants within walking distance.
This is where the reviews become much less consistent.
Alongside guests who report a pleasant stay, there are critical reviews that mention dated rooms, inadequate maintenance and a gap between the price and the standard of accommodation.
In a review published on Tripadvisor in January 2025, for example, guests described a spacious but dated room, a damp feel and problems with cleanliness and maintenance.
On Booking.com, by contrast, the hotel gets reasonable to good scores for cleanliness and comfort.
This gap matters.
It doesn't mean every room is neglected, but it would also be wrong to ignore the complaints.
Some of the differences may come from different room categories, maintenance carried out at different times or guests' differing expectations.
So we would recommend reading in particular the most recent reviews that refer to the room type you plan to book.
Look for comments on the air conditioning, the shower, damp, the smell in the room and the state of the furniture.
In a relatively simple hotel, these details can make a big difference to the quality of your stay.
Service is another area where the sources differ.
On Booking.com the staff get a fairly positive rating, and some guests praise the help they received and the way the staff treated them.
On Agoda and Tripadvisor, by contrast, there are less flattering reviews of the service and the overall value.
This doesn't necessarily mean the service is bad.
It does suggest that the service experience is not entirely consistent in guests' accounts.
If you need specific services, such as a pick-up from the pier, transfers, a late arrival or help booking trips, get explicit confirmation from the hotel in advance.
One of Bow Thong's advantages is that you can enjoy much of the Sairee area on foot.
The hotel is in the northern part of the beach, and from there you can walk to the area's restaurants, cafés and bars.
But it is important to understand exactly where it is.
If you want to go out every evening to the southern or more distant parts of Sairee, you will need to walk further.
Compared with hotels on the hills above Sairee, the advantage here is that the hotel is at beach level, with no long, tiring climb on the way back.
That is one of the reasons the location can also suit travellers who don't want to rent a scooter.
That said, reaching remote bays and viewpoints around Koh Tao usually requires transport.
It certainly can be, but it is important to understand what kind of couple's holiday it offers.
This is not a hotel built on luxury, a lavish infinity pool or advanced spa facilities.
Its appeal is different: a tropical bungalow, greenery, closeness to the sea, sunsets and a relatively quiet atmosphere.
A couple looking for somewhere simple and pleasant, who want to spend the day between the beach and Sairee's restaurants, may enjoy it very much.
On the other hand, a couple looking for a particularly polished room, new furniture, a lavish pool and consistently high service may be disappointed.
So we would describe it as a hotel better suited to a simple beach holiday for two than to a luxury getaway.
Anyone who wants to sleep by the sea. This is the hotel's clearest advantage.
Anyone who prefers the quiet part of Sairee. The northern location lets you stay close to the tourist centre without sleeping right in it.
Couples who like bungalows with a tropical atmosphere. Especially if they prefer a veranda and a sea view to a modern hotel.
Anyone planning to spend a lot of time on the beach. There is no need to travel to enjoy the seaside here.
Anyone who doesn't need a pool or a luxury room. Come with expectations that match the simple character of the place.
If a new room with a high standard of design matters to you, look at other options.
If you are particularly sensitive to damp smells, dated bathrooms or uneven maintenance, read the latest reviews carefully.
If you want a big pool, a pool bar and an indulgent resort complex, Bow Thong is not the obvious choice.
And if you want to be right in the middle of Sairee's nightlife and shops, you may prefer a location a little further south.
The answer depends very much on the price you get.
On Booking.com the hotel scores about 7.7 out of 10 for value for money, while on Agoda its score in this category is lower.
In other words, even guests don't fully agree.
It is easy to see why.
If you book a bungalow with a lovely sea view, enjoy the beach and the quiet and get a price that fits your budget, you may feel it is a very good deal.
But if you pay a high price and expect a room finished to the standard of a new hotel, you may be disappointed.
So we wouldn't choose the hotel just because it is on the beach.
We would compare the price of the room category you want with other hotels in north Sairee, check the current condition of the rooms and only then decide.
Our research paints a fairly clear picture.
The main reason to choose Bow Thong is the location, not the hotel's facilities.
It lets you stay in a bungalow in a relatively quiet part of north Sairee, enjoy the sea and the sunsets and stay within walking distance of restaurants and bars.
These are very real advantages on Koh Tao.
But don't expect a luxury hotel.
The rooms are fairly simple, and reviews of the upkeep, cleanliness and value for money are not consistent.
So our recommendation is to choose it only after checking the room category and the current price, and to pay special attention to the latest reviews from guests who stayed in the same type of bungalow.
The bottom line: Bow Thong can be a great fit if you dream of a bungalow on Sairee Beach in a tropical, relatively quiet setting. If you prefer a modern room, indulgent facilities and a more consistent standard, look at other options before you book.
The hotel is in north Sairee Beach on Koh Tao, next to the beach and within walking distance of restaurants and the main tourist spots.
Booking sites list it as a beachfront hotel, and some bungalows have a sea view. That said, the distance to the beach and the view vary depending on where the room is.
A swimming pool is not listed among the main facilities on booking sites. If a pool matters to you, confirm directly with the hotel.
Many guests praise its location at the relatively quiet northern end of Sairee. That said, noise levels can vary depending on where the bungalow is and what is going on nearby.
Yes, especially for couples who like simple bungalows, a tropical atmosphere, sunsets and a beachfront location.
If the view and the sunset matter to you, it is worth looking into. Check in advance what you can see from the veranda and where the bungalow sits in relation to the beach.
You can enjoy Sairee on foot. If you plan to visit remote bays on the island, you will need extra transport. There is no need to rent a scooter if you are inexperienced or don't hold a suitable licence.
Reviews are mixed. Alongside reasonable cleanliness scores on booking sites, there are also complaints about upkeep and dated rooms. Check recent reviews for your room category.
