DD Hut Koh Tao is a small resort built on a rocky slope above the sea, between Sairee Beach and Mae Haad pier. The pool overlooking the bay, the sea-facing balconies and the restaurant facing the sunset give it a different feel from Koh Tao's simple beach hotels. Its big strength is the combination of an impressive view, relative quiet and a short walk to both of the island's tourist centres. But not every room offers the same level of comfort, and the uneven maintenance and value for money mean you need to choose your room category carefully.
DD Hut is on the west coast of Koh Tao, on a rocky stretch of shore between two main areas: Mae Haad, home to the ferry pier, and Sairee, known for its long beach, restaurants and nightlife.
The layout of the resort is different from beach hotels that sit right on the sand.
The rooms and bungalows are set on a slope running down to the sea, with paths and steps linking the rooms, the pool and the restaurant.

Some rooms face straight out over the bay, and their height lets you enjoy an open view of the water and the boats anchored along the shore.
The property is not particularly large, so it can suit anyone looking for a more intimate holiday who does not warm to big, busy resorts.
However, the terraced design also means climbs and steps, especially on the way back from the pool and the shore to the higher rooms.
One of DD Hut's main advantages is its location.
Koh Tao's main pier is about 700 metres away, according to the hotel's description on Booking.com.
The southern end of Sairee Beach is also within walking distance, and there are restaurants, cafés and places to go out nearby.
So you get easy access to both areas without staying right on Sairee's main street.
Mae Haad is especially convenient for arriving on and leaving the island. The area has the pier, shops, services for travellers and restaurants.
Sairee, on the other hand, is the busiest tourist area on Koh Tao, with a long beach, cafés, restaurants and bars.
DD Hut sits between them, so you can walk to many of the main places.
That is a real advantage for travellers who do not want to rent a scooter.
Being on the slope above the sea gives the property a relatively relaxed feel.
But being close to Sairee means it will not be completely quiet every night.
In some rooms you may hear music from the nightlife areas, and sometimes groups coming to the area in the evening.
In addition, soundproofing varies between the rooms.
If you are particularly sensitive to noise, check where your room is and how close it is to the paths, the restaurant and nearby bars.
DD Hut's pool is without doubt one of the standout features of the property.
It is an outdoor swimming pool overlooking the sea and Koh Tao's west coast.
Its position above the rocks makes it feel part of the landscape, with blue water, greenery and boats in the background.
The pool is designed so that the sea-facing sections have an especially open view, and it is sometimes described as an infinity pool.
If you love spending long hours in the water with a beautiful view, this is a significant advantage.
You can combine time at the pool with relaxing in the lounge areas and a meal at the restaurant next door.
As this is a relatively small resort, the atmosphere can be intimate and pleasant.
However, there are fairly few spots around the pool, and how busy it is depends on how full the hotel is.
The state of the sun loungers and cushions is also worth bearing in mind. At some times the equipment around the pool has needed better upkeep.
So if you are choosing the hotel mainly for the pool, look at recent photos of it and of the seating areas.
DD Hut offers several types of room, so it is important not to treat all the units as identical.
The options include Superior rooms, Deluxe sea-view bungalows, rooms for three or four people, suites for couples and villas with a private pool.
The level of fittings, size, design and position vary between categories.
Superior rooms are an option if you want the hotel's facilities and location without necessarily booking one of the most expensive units.
They offer a fairly comfortable stay, with a private bathroom and the basic facilities you need on the island.
However, do not assume that every Superior room has a direct sea view.
If the view is your main consideration, check the details of the specific room.
The sea-facing bungalows are among the most interesting options at the resort.
The balconies let you enjoy the view away from the pool too, and being close to the waterline gives the place the feel of a tropical island holiday.
From some units you can see the bay and the boats straight from the room.
Check where the bungalow is, how private the balcony is and how many steps separate it from the hotel's facilities.
The higher categories also include suites and villas with a private pool.
This option is especially suitable for couples looking for privacy and a sea view.
A private pool lets you enjoy the water without depending on the shared pool, and can become the centrepiece of the holiday.
But it is worth distinguishing between a plunge pool and a large swimming pool.
In addition, when you book a particularly expensive unit, check the state of the cushions, the deck, the bathroom and the outdoor facilities.
Comfort at DD Hut varies between room types.
Some units are spacious, well designed and pleasant, with comfortable beds and a beautiful view.
Other rooms, however, show signs of age, and the maintenance does not always match what you would expect for the price.
The bathrooms are something to check carefully.
Some units have occasional problems with drainage, sealing or fluctuating water temperature.
Soundproofing between rooms is not consistent either, so noise from around the property may be more noticeable in certain units.
Choose your room according to the level of comfort you want, not just the view.
This is one of the areas where the picture of DD Hut is less consistent.
On the one hand, the hotel gets good cleanliness scores on Booking and Agoda.
On the other, there are detailed reviews mentioning dated rooms, stained bedding, mould in bathrooms and poor upkeep of the outdoor seating areas.
This gap may come down to differences between rooms, visits at different times or the quality of maintenance during the stay.
You cannot conclude that every room is in poor condition, but the complaints should not be ignored either.
Especially in the more expensive villas, check recent photos and compare the room categories.
DD Hut has two restaurants listed on booking sites: DD Hut Restaurant and Seaside Bar & Restaurant.
Being able to eat on the property is a plus, especially if you prefer to spend a good part of the day at the pool and in your room.
This restaurant is in the sea-facing area and offers a menu combining Thai food, fish, seafood, grilled dishes and more.
Its position lets you sit facing the view and, in the late afternoon, enjoy the changing light as the sun goes down.
It is one of the resort's advantages if you are looking for a relaxed holiday for two.
The second restaurant serves Asian food and also opens in the morning, depending on opening hours.
This means you can eat at the hotel without heading out to the restaurant areas of Sairee or Mae Haad.
However, check the current opening hours of both restaurants, as not every service is necessarily available every day and in every season.
Breakfast is served on the property, with continental, American and other options depending on your rate.
The setting by the sea adds to the experience, especially if you like starting the morning with the view.
However, the variety and service are not always consistent.
At busy times there may be waits or dishes may be slow to be refilled, so if a generous breakfast matters a lot to you, check in advance what is included in the rate.
Being close to the restaurants of Mae Haad and Sairee also means you can choose to eat outside the hotel.
DD Hut sits on a rocky stretch of shore between Sairee and Mae Haad.
This is not a long sandy beach like central Sairee, but an area where rocks and water meet below the property.
There is access to the water nearby, and in suitable conditions you can also enjoy snorkelling around the rocks.
However, check the state of the sea, the depth of the water and how easy it is to get in each day.
The term "private beach area" on booking sites refers to access and guest facilities, not necessarily to private ownership of the shore.
If you are looking for a wide strip of sand for sunbathing and long walks, nearby Sairee Beach is the place.
The resort is built on sloping ground above the sea, so it has several levels.
The way from the rooms to the pool and the restaurant may involve steps.
The distance between the different units and the facilities also varies.
If you struggle with climbs, have limited mobility or are travelling with a pushchair, check the room's position and accessibility in advance.
A room with a spectacular view high up on the slope will not necessarily be the most practical choice day to day.
Service at DD Hut gets relatively high scores on booking sites.
The hotel offers help arranging activities, laundry services and transfer options, subject to availability.
Being close to the pier makes the arrival and departure services particularly useful.
However, the handling of faults is not consistent in every case.
It is worth arranging important services in advance, especially if you are arriving late or plan to book an expensive room category.
DD Hut can suit a couples' holiday very well thanks to its location, pool and sea view.
Being able to enjoy a pool overlooking the bay, sit in a restaurant facing the sunset and spend time on a private balcony gives it a romantic feel.
Especially in the categories with a sea view or private pool, you can get a more intimate holiday than at the central hotels in Sairee.
But it is important to choose the room carefully.
At a resort in a relatively high price bracket, maintenance gaps, noise or bathroom problems can spoil the experience.
So do not choose it on the strength of the pool photos alone.
One of the big advantages of DD Hut is that you can enjoy it without renting a scooter.
Mae Haad and Sairee are within walking distance, so you can reach the restaurants, shops and main nightlife spots.
That is a strong point compared with resorts in Koh Tao's remote bays.
Bear in mind, though, that there are steps within the hotel itself, and some of the roads in the area are not completely level.
To visit more distant beaches and viewpoints you will need suitable transport.
Couples looking for a pool facing the sea: the pool and the open view are the resort's main attraction.
Anyone who wants a convenient location with a sense of calm: you can walk to Sairee and Mae Haad without sleeping right in the middle of the nightlife.
Anyone looking for a room with a balcony and a sea view: some of the bungalows and suites offer a particularly pleasant stay.
Anyone interested in a villa with a private pool: there are suitable categories, subject to availability.
Travellers who prefer not to rent a scooter: easy access to restaurants, the pier and the beach is a significant advantage.
DD Hut is less suitable if you struggle with steps or are looking for a completely level, accessible property.
If you are especially sensitive to noise, check the room's position carefully.
Travellers who place great importance on meticulous maintenance and a consistent standard of finish should compare the categories and check the current state of the units.
And if you want a wide sandy beach right outside the door, you may prefer a hotel directly on the sand at Sairee.
Value for money depends very much on the room category and the rate.
The location, the view and the pool give the hotel clear advantages.
But the higher the price, the more important it is to make sure the room is well maintained and the facilities live up to expectations.
Especially in the suites and villas with a private pool, check the state of the outdoor facilities, the bathroom and recent photos.
If the price is close to that of newer resorts, compare comfort and service as well, not just the view.
DD Hut is a small resort with a significant advantage: it combines a swimming pool overlooking the sea, bungalows and suites with a view of the bay, and a convenient location between Sairee and Mae Haad.
It is an attractive combination if you want a holiday for two with a beautiful pool and an open view, without being far from Koh Tao's restaurants and tourist centres.
But this is not a resort where every room offers the same level of comfort.
There are gaps in maintenance and in the condition of the units, so choosing the room category is especially important.
DD Hut suits anyone looking for a sea view, an impressive pool and a convenient location. It is especially worth booking when you choose a well-maintained room at a price that matches the standard of the stay.
