What's Cup, Koh Phangan - A Cafe with a Stunning View over Haad Yao and Excellent Food
We came for the gluten-free bread. We stayed for the view, the food and the service.

Some cafes you stumble on by chance, and they end up being among the places you remember most from a trip. For us, What's Cup on Koh Phangan was exactly that kind of place.
In February 2025, while we were staying in Haad Yao, we were looking for a cafe with gluten-free options. That's how we found What's Cup, which turned out to be one of the most beautiful and pleasant cafes we visited on the island.
As soon as we arrived we were struck by the size of the place and the atmosphere. It isn't a small, cramped cafe with a few tables facing the sea, but a spacious venue with all kinds of seating areas, an open terrace and a stunning panoramic view of Haad Yao bay.
The food was excellent, the service was great, and the gluten-free bread was one of the tastiest we've had. And that's far from a given.
What makes What's Cup special?
The location and the view - Haad Yao from above
What's Cup sits on a hillside above Haad Yao beach, in the north-west of Koh Phangan.
From the terrace there's a wide view of the bay: turquoise and blue sea, a strip of beach, palm trees, tropical greenery and the green hills that surround the area.
What we especially loved is that the high position lets you see the beach from a different angle. You're not sitting on the sand looking straight out to sea, but looking down over the whole bay.
On a clear day, like the day we visited, the view is simply beautiful.
But for us, the appeal of the place isn't just the view itself, it's the way the cafe is built around it.
A large, spacious cafe with lots of places to sit
One of the things that surprised us at What's Cup was its size.
It's roomy, with a variety of seating areas and tables, so you can choose between different corners depending on the atmosphere you're after.
The design combines wooden furniture, light tones, woven lampshades and white fabric curtains. It's all fairly simple, but pleasant and well suited to the tropical setting.
There are tables suited to a relaxed breakfast and seats right in front of the bay.
Naturally, the tables looking straight out to sea are the most sought after.

We wanted a table with a view - and the staff made it happen
When we arrived, we really wanted to sit by the railing, facing the view of Haad Yao.
But those tables were taken, so at first we sat somewhere else.
Before long a table right in front of the sea came free, and the staff moved us to it.
It may sound like a small detail, but for us it says a lot about the service.
We didn't have to settle for the table we were given at the start of our visit. The staff paid attention to what we wanted and made sure we could enjoy the very spot we'd come for.
The service was excellent throughout our visit, and it really added to the experience.

What do you eat at What's Cup?
The What's Cup menu is very varied and focuses on breakfast, brunch, light dishes, fruit bowls, coffee and drinks.
You'll find egg dishes, toasts, salads, smoothie bowls and other options that also suit anyone who prefers a lighter meal.
One of the advantages for us was being able to order gluten-free bread.
The breakfast we ordered
We ordered a breakfast with a folded omelette, crispy bacon, two slices of gluten-free bread, a green salad with radishes and a dark jam served in a small heart-shaped dish.
It was a beautiful, generous and very tasty plate.
Alongside it we had a latte, served in a green cup with delicate art in the foam.
Our photos from the visit also show a colourful smoothie bowl with granola and tropical fruit, including dragon fruit, banana and mango. It looks like the Strawberry Bowl or Acai Berry Bowl on the cafe's menu.
Everything we tasted was very good.

The gluten-free bread - a particularly happy surprise
We want to dwell on the bread in particular, because it's the reason we found the cafe in the first place.
It isn't always easy to find gluten-free bread that actually tastes good. Often the texture is dry, crumbly or just not very good.
At What's Cup we had a pleasant surprise.
The gluten-free bread was simply excellent.
It was unusually tasty compared with a lot of gluten-free breads we've tried, and we really enjoyed it.
For us, it wasn't just a dietary option that let one of us eat something from the menu, but a genuinely good part of the meal.
If you avoid gluten and are travelling on Koh Phangan, this is definitely a cafe worth knowing. More places we checked ourselves are on our gluten-free Koh Phangan page.
It's important to distinguish between avoiding gluten and coeliac disease: the fact that gluten-free bread is served doesn't guarantee a preparation area free from cross-contamination. Anyone who needs to be strict for medical reasons should check this directly with the staff.
Does What's Cup have gluten-free options?
Yes. According to photos of the menu from April-May 2025, you could swap the bread in dishes for gluten-free bread for an extra charge.
The prices on the menu at that time were:
- Swapping regular bread for gluten-free bread: 30 baht.
- An extra slice of gluten-free bread: 50 baht.
It's a particularly useful option, because it means you can enjoy regular brunch dishes without necessarily being limited to dishes without bread.
Prices and swap terms may change, so check the current menu before you order.
What makes What's Cup so popular?
After our visit, it's easy for us to see why the place draws so many travellers.
First of all, the view. It's hard to compete with a terrace that looks down over Haad Yao bay.
But for us, the view alone wouldn't have been enough.
Koh Phangan has quite a few restaurants and cafes in beautiful locations. What makes What's Cup particularly good is the combination of several things:
- The location: an open view over the sea and the beaches of Haad Yao.
- The space: a large cafe with all kinds of seating areas, not a small place that feels cramped.
- The food: a wide menu, carefully made dishes and very tasty food.
- The gluten-free options: a real plus for travellers looking for a suitable breakfast.
- The service: attentive, friendly and pleasant staff who, in our own experience at least, made an effort to make the visit better.
It's that combination that makes it, in our eyes, more than just another pretty, photogenic cafe.
When is the best time to go to What's Cup?
We visited during the day, when there was natural light and the view of the bay was open and clear.
If the view is one of the main reasons for your visit, we'd recommend going in the morning and trying to get a table on the terrace.
Bear in mind that the cafe is popular, and tables looking straight out to sea may be taken.
Even if you don't get one of those tables straight away, it's worth asking the staff whether you can move when one comes free. In our case it worked perfectly.
Is What's Cup worth a special trip?
For us, definitely yes.
If you're staying in Haad Yao, it's one of the places we'd recommend fitting in during your time in the area.
And even if you're staying in another part of Koh Phangan and exploring the north-west of the island, you can combine a stop at the cafe with a visit to the beaches of Haad Yao and the surroundings.
We'd come here for breakfast or a leisurely brunch, not just a quick coffee.
It's the kind of place worth giving some time to: pick a pleasant seat, order something delicious and simply enjoy the view.
Our bottom line
We came to What's Cup because we were looking for a cafe with gluten-free bread, and we left with a recommendation for a far more special place.
We loved the space, the seating areas, the view of Haad Yao, the service and the varied menu.
And the gluten-free bread? It was so good that we still remember it.
What's Cup is exactly the kind of place where you don't have to choose between a beautiful view and a good breakfast. You get both.
