A tropical resort with character: excellent grounds, pool, view and service. Less so for the basic room (dated design and some wear, but clean) or the rocky swimming beach.
Yes
Some hotels you choose for the room, and some you choose for the place as a whole. To us, Panviman Resort Koh Phangan belongs to the second kind. A large, green resort built into a hillside above the sea, with an impressive pool, garden paths, Thai-style wooden buildings and a view that accompanies you almost everywhere you go.
We stayed at Panviman in February 2025, on Thong Nai Pan Noi beach in the north-east of Koh Phangan. We were there for three nights, long enough to get a good feel for the grounds, the pool, the service and the rooms.
We really loved the atmosphere and the tropical surroundings. On the other hand, there were also things that suited us less for what we look for on a holiday in Thailand, mainly the nearby beach and the room design. So this is not a blanket recommendation, but a review of a hotel with clear strengths, alongside a few points worth knowing before you book.
Panviman sits on a hilly headland between the two beautiful bays of north-east Koh Phangan: Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai.
This area is very different from the island's busier beaches. The scenery here is green and hilly, the buildings blend into the vegetation, and the atmosphere suits anyone looking for a relatively quiet holiday, away from the party hotspots.
The location is one of the hotel's greatest assets, but it also has practical implications: this is not a hotel in the middle of a crowded tourist area, where you step out of your room and are immediately everywhere. Factor in the distances, the slopes and the need for transport when you plan your day.
If you want to devote a large part of your holiday to the resort itself, it can be an excellent choice. If you plan to spend most of the day exploring the island, check whether the location suits your plans.
One of the things we love about hotels in Thailand is the way they use natural materials. Dark wood, bamboo, stone, pitched roofs and tropical gardens create a feeling you simply cannot recreate in an ordinary city hotel.

At Panviman we found a lot of that style.
Right at the entrance, the large stone gate with the hotel's name stands out. Further in there are open seating areas, massive wooden beams, woven light fittings, statues and local decorative pieces. It is not a minimalist or especially modern style. There is something traditionally Thai about it, rich in detail, that gives the place character.
We especially loved the open seating areas, with rattan furniture, pale cushions and the green view all around. These are places that simply invite you to sit, without rushing anywhere.
The gardens are a big part of the experience too. Between the buildings there is dense vegetation, natural rocks and little corners with statues and ornamental ponds. It feels as though the hotel was built into the hill, rather than the hill being cleared to build it.

For us, Panviman's beauty does not lie in one impressive feature, but in the connection between the architecture, the vegetation and the sea.
If there is one place at Panviman we would choose to show anyone thinking of booking, it is the pool.
It is built on several levels, with blue tiles, curved lines and natural rocks woven into the surroundings. Around the water there are trees and plants, and on one side lounging areas with large daybeds and white curtains.
The pool does not look like a blue rectangle placed next to a building. It is part of the landscape.
From the different levels you get glimpses of the sea, and the transition between water, trees and rocks creates the feeling of a tropical garden.

In our view, this is one of Panviman's main strengths. Even if the beach is not quite what you are looking for, the pool area can be a good reason to choose the hotel.
We stayed in a Superior room, with breakfast included.
The first room we were given suited us less, in its look and overall feel. We asked to change, and the staff immediately moved us to a room we liked better.
Here it is important to us to distinguish between the condition of the room and its style. The second room also had signs of wear on the furniture and in the bathroom, but it was clean and pleasant, with no cleanliness problems at all. In terms of design, it felt a little dated to us.
That is worth knowing, especially because the photos of the pool, the view and the villas can create an expectation of a uniform experience across every part of the hotel.
Panviman offers several room types, including Deluxe rooms, suites and villas with private pools. These are very different categories, so it would be wrong to conclude from our experience in a Superior room that all the rooms look or feel the same.
If room design matters to you, we recommend not relying on the general photos of the resort. Open the photos for the exact room category you are about to book, and check what you actually get.
If you like classic Thai style, you may well love the design. If you are looking for a modern, bright, minimalist room, check the options carefully.

One of the things that left a positive impression on us was the service.
The staff were wonderful, and everything at the hotel ran pleasantly. On grounds as large as Panviman's, service matters all the more, because the distances between areas affect your day-to-day experience.
The hotel is built on a hill, across different levels. That is exactly why it has such beautiful views, but also why not every trip between your room, the pool and the entrance is necessarily a short, level walk.
We came in through the lower gate, near the village, and from there the hotel shuttle took us up the hill. The shuttles came frequently, and the hotel also took care of moving our luggage.
During our stay we made use of the hotel's shuttle service. It is worth knowing about it in advance, especially if you do not want to deal with slopes or long walks in the heat.
It is worth distinguishing between two kinds of trip: getting around inside the hotel grounds, and getting to the area outside them.
At Panviman you can use shuttle services, but do not assume that every ride is available immediately or that every service is included in the room price.
If you plan to go out to restaurants in the evening or come back at a particular time, ask reception in advance how the shuttles work, where the pick-up point is and whether you need to arrange them ahead.
It is a small detail that can make a big difference to your comfort, especially at a hillside hotel.
This is probably where our experience was less successful.
Panviman's seaside setting is very beautiful. The bays, the green hills and the rocks create an impressive tropical landscape. But for us, the beach next to the hotel was not the ideal swimming beach.
While we were there, the area was rocky and there were waves. We love beaches where it is easy to get into the water, swim and spend a long time in the sea, so this beach suited us less.

This is an important distinction: a beautiful sea view and a good swimming beach are not necessarily the same thing.
Sea conditions change with the season and the weather, so our experience in February 2025 does not necessarily describe the conditions on every day of the year.
If you are mainly after a pool, a view and quiet, you may love the location. If your first priority is a sandy beach that is easy to swim from, check the nearby beaches too before you decide.
Our booking included breakfast, but we do not have detailed enough notes to rate the quality of the food, the choice or how well it caters for a gluten-free diet.
The hotel has dining areas with sea views, and the meal options are part of the resort experience. If you plan to stay on the grounds for most of the day, check in advance which restaurants are open, what your booking includes and whether you need to reserve a table.
If you avoid gluten, it is especially important to ask the hotel what can be made gluten-free and whether the kitchen can adapt how dishes are prepared to your needs. We would not rely simply on the fact that it is an upmarket hotel.
In our view, the choice of room matters more here than at many other hotels.
There is a big difference between a basic Superior room and a villa with a private pool and a sea view. Our own experience relates to the Superior category, so our recommendation is to compare the categories based on what really matters to you.
Superior room: suits anyone who wants to enjoy the grounds and the pool without necessarily paying for one of the more expensive categories. Bear in mind that the style may feel classic and a little dated.
Deluxe room: an option worth checking if you want a bigger room. According to the hotel's description, some categories include a balcony and a sea view, but confirm what the specific room includes.
Villa with a private pool: for anyone who wants a central part of the holiday to happen in their room and private space. This is a different kind of stay altogether, priced accordingly.
We would compare not only the price, but also the view, the distance from the facilities, the room's accessibility and recent photos of the room interior.
Panviman can be a great fit for couples looking for a quiet, romantic break, for anyone who loves tropical hotels with local architecture, and for travellers who prefer to spend a large part of the day by the pool and on the hotel grounds.
It also suits anyone willing to pay for an upgraded room or a private villa, who sees the room and the view as an important part of the holiday.
On the other hand, we would think twice if you are looking for a small, flat hotel where everything is a few steps away, if you want to walk in and out many times a day, or if a perfect swimming beach matters more to you than the pool and the view.
And if you prefer very modern design, check the room category rather than relying on the impressive look of the grounds.
The hotel is in the north-east of Koh Phangan, a drive from the island's main pier area, Thong Sala.
You can reach Koh Phangan by ferry from Koh Samui or from the mainland, and then carry on by road to the hotel.
According to the official website, Panviman also offers a paid private speedboat transfer from Koh Samui. Timetables and prices may change, so arrange your arrival in advance rather than relying on availability on the day.
If you are arriving with suitcases, our advice is to book your transfer all the way to the hotel before arrival day, especially if you land or arrive by ferry late in the day.
We booked Panviman in advance through a booking site: three nights, at about 7,600 THB (about $226 / €201) per night. Everything looked in order.
When we got to reception, it turned out that only one of the three nights appeared in the booking the hotel had received. We stood there with our suitcases, not knowing whether we could stay for the other two nights. It was a stressful moment.
We asked whether we could book the remaining two nights directly with the hotel. To our relief there were rooms available, and then came the surprise: the price they offered us was about 4,300 THB (about $128 / €114) per night.
That meant a difference of about 3,300 THB (about $98 / €87) per night, and about 6,500 THB (about $193 / €172) in total for the two nights, compared with the original price. A glitch that started out stressful ended with a pleasant surprise.
One of the conclusions we have drawn from booking hotels in Thailand is that you should not assume any one booking site will always be the cheapest.
Before booking, we would check the same room category, on the same dates and with the same cancellation terms, in three places: Agoda, Booking and the hotel's official website.
It is important to compare the final price, including taxes, breakfast and cancellation terms, not just the price shown in the search results.
Panviman's official website also advertises perks for booking direct, but check whether they apply to your dates and what their terms are.
Our tip: if you find a particularly good price, take a screenshot of the booking terms before paying. That makes it easier to confirm that the room, the meals and the perks you get really are what you meant to book.
Yes, but with an important caveat: we would recommend it mainly for the grounds, the pool, the view and the service, and not necessarily for the basic room or the swimming at the beach.
There is something very Thai about Panviman. The wooden buildings, the gardens, the rocks and the pool set into the hillside create a place with character, not just another international resort that could be put down in any destination in the world.
We are glad we stayed there. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the service, and the pool is definitely one of the most beautiful places we saw during our stay.
On the other hand, if we went back, we would look at a room in a higher category, and arrive knowing that the sea is part of the view but not necessarily where we would spend most of the day.
In the end, Panviman is a hotel to choose with an understanding of what it offers: a quiet, scenic tropical resort holiday, with a wonderful pool and a special atmosphere. If that is exactly what you are looking for, there is a lot to love here.
If you are still choosing between areas, in our guide to Thong Nai Pan we compare Noi and Yai and list more hotels on the bay, and our guide to where to stay in Koh Phangan compares every area of the island. And if you would like a simpler atmosphere, on the neighbouring bay, you can read about Dreamland Resort.
This review is based on our own stay in February 2025. Operational details, prices and services may have changed since our visit.
On a hill at the end of Thong Nai Pan Noi bay, in north-east Koh Phangan, close to the village and the food market.
In our experience, yes, thanks to the design, the service, the pool and the atmosphere. It is worth knowing in advance that some rooms show signs of wear.
No. Thong Nai Pan Noi beach is open to everyone, and the hotel sits at its quiet end, so the corner feels fairly secluded.
Partly. There are frequent internal shuttles, but the hotel is built on a steep slope and there are quite a few steps between levels.
In February 2025: about 7,600 THB (about $226 / €201) per night through a booking site, and about 4,300 THB (about $128 / €114) per night when booking at reception. These are not current prices, and we did not check whether it was the same room category.
Compare the booking sites with the hotel's website, and sometimes ask for a direct quote. We would not turn up without a booking.
Yes. Our reservation is about wear on the furniture and in the bathroom, not cleanliness.
Not for the local area: the village and the food market are close by. For the rest of the island - a taxi or a transfer.
