Where to stay in Koh Phangan?
A guide to the areas and hotels
On Koh Phangan, the area you choose to stay in changes your whole holiday. This guide will help you understand how the island is laid out, who each area suits and which hotels are worth knowing about.
Read the full guideWhere to stay in Koh Phangan? The answer depends far more on the area you choose than on the number of stars your hotel has. On Koh Phangan you'll find beaches with sunsets and restaurants within walking distance, secluded bays with luxury hotels, fishing villages, yoga areas and beaches where the parties go on until morning.
The differences between the areas are significant. A hotel on a gorgeous beach can give you a wonderful holiday during the day, but also mean a drive every time you want to go out to a restaurant or visit another area. A simpler hotel in a central location, on the other hand, may suit you much better if you like to explore and go out in the evenings.
Distances on the map can be misleading too. Koh Phangan is a mountainous island, and the drive between some beaches follows winding roads with steep climbs and descents. On top of that, taxis aren't cheap, and public transport is limited.
In this guide we'll cover the main areas to stay on Koh Phangan, explain who each one suits, what there is to do nearby, whether you can manage without a car and which hotels are worth knowing about. We'll also share our impressions of the hotels we stayed in during February 2025, including the pros and cons worth knowing before you book.
How to choose where to stay on Koh Phangan
Before choosing a hotel on Koh Phangan, decide what you want your holiday to look like.
Is the aim to wake up facing a beautiful beach and spend most of the day at the hotel? Is it important to walk out to restaurants and cafés in the evening? Are you planning to hire a car and explore the beaches? Or is your holiday built around the Full Moon Party?
These questions shape your choice of area just as much as your hotel budget.
Koh Phangan's areas to stay at a glance
| Area | Character | Especially suits | Getting around |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haad Yao | Beach, sunsets, restaurants | Couples and beach lovers | Easy in the central part, a car for trips |
| Thong Nai Pan Noi | Romantic bay and luxury hotels | Couples and a pampering holiday | The village is walkable; longer drives |
| Thong Nai Pan Yai | Wide beach and a relaxed atmosphere | Families and a quiet holiday | Walking locally, transport to the rest of the island |
| Chaloklum | Fishing village and restaurants | A quiet holiday and a local feel | The village is easy on foot, a car for trips |
| Mae Haad | Natural beach and Koh Ma | Beach lovers and snorkelling | Transport for trips out of the area |
| Srithanu | Yoga, cafés and an international community | Yoga, retreats and long stays | Depends on the exact location |
| Haad Rin | Parties and nightlife | The Full Moon and party-goers | Walking in the central area |
| Thong Sala | Pier, markets and services | Practical convenience and budget stays | Transport and services hub |
| Ban Tai / Ban Kai | Beach strip and bars | Mixing nights out with a central location | Transport to the other beaches |

Our pick by type of holiday
If you want a beautiful beach with restaurants and cafés: Haad Yao is one of the most appealing options, especially the central area behind the beach.
For couples looking for a romantic holiday and a pampering hotel: Thong Nai Pan Noi is an excellent choice for its bay, its atmosphere and its hotels.
If you prefer village life and local food: Chaloklum offers a mix of beach, restaurants and a food market, without the party-area atmosphere.
If you're coming for a retreat, yoga or a long stay: Srithanu is one of the areas most closely associated with this style of holiday.
If you're coming for the Full Moon Party: Haad Rin is the obvious choice if you want to be at the heart of the event, but factor in the noise and the crowds.
If you plan to spend most of your time at the resort: the Thong Nai Pan bays offer a relaxed beach experience, even if they're less convenient for daily trips to other parts of the island.
Understand the map of Koh Phangan before you book a hotel
Koh Phangan lies in the Gulf of Thailand, north of Koh Samui and south of Koh Tao. Although it's fairly small, the island isn't built around a single tourist centre.
Most of the villages, beaches and places to stay are along the coast, while the interior of the island is mountainous and covered in vegetation.
To get your bearings, it helps to divide the island into a few areas:
- West and north-west: Srithanu, Haad Yao, Haad Salad and Mae Haad. An area known for sunsets, beaches, cafés and a wide range of places to stay.
- North: Chaloklum and Bottle Beach. A fishing village, natural beaches and more secluded spots.
- North-east: Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai. Two bays surrounded by mountains, with hotels and places to stay along the beaches.
- South-east: Haad Rin. The island's party centre.
- South and south-west: Thong Sala, Ban Tai and Ban Kai. Areas with access to the piers, restaurants, shops and the main roads.
Why distances on Koh Phangan are misleading
Two beaches can look very close on the map, but the route between them isn't necessarily direct.
In some areas you have to drive over mountain roads or go back to a main road to reach a neighbouring bay.
Even within the same area there can be big differences between a hotel right on the beach and one set high up on a hill.
So before you book a hotel, check not only its address but also where the entrance is, the differences in height, the road leading to it and whether you can walk from there to restaurants.
1Haad Yao - a beautiful beach with restaurants and sunsets
Haad Yao is in north-west Koh Phangan and is one of the most appealing areas to stay if you're looking for a tropical beach alongside places to eat and go out.
The long stretch of sand is framed by greenery, and in the late afternoon the beach faces the sunset over the sea.
One of Haad Yao's standout advantages is the combination of a beach with a street of cafés, restaurants, shops and tourist services.
But it's important to understand that not all hotels in the area offer the same level of convenience.
How is the Haad Yao area laid out?
In the central part of Haad Yao you can combine time on the beach with walking out to restaurants and cafés.
Places to stay on hillsides or at the far ends of the area, on the other hand, may involve a steep climb or a drive.
That's a significant difference, especially if you want to go out in the evening without using a car.
So check the hotel's location in relation to the beach and the main street, rather than simply relying on it appearing in a search under Haad Yao.
Who should stay in Haad Yao?
Haad Yao particularly suits couples, beach lovers and anyone who wants to combine rest with restaurants, shopping and relaxed evenings out.
It can also suit travellers planning to hire a car and explore the island, because the area is connected to the coastal roads of west Koh Phangan.
The pros of Haad Yao
- A long beach with beautiful sunsets.
- Cafés, shops and restaurants in the central area.
- A range of bungalows, resorts and hotels.
- The chance to combine a beach holiday with trips around the north and west of Koh Phangan.
The cons of Haad Yao
- Not all hotels are within an easy walk of the restaurants.
- Some places to stay are on hillsides.
- Swimming conditions are affected by the tides.
- Getting to the party areas in the south-east means a drive.
Hotels in Haad Yao - our experience
Long Bay Resort
Long Bay Resort is a resort on Haad Yao beach where we stayed for about a week in February 2025.
The beachfront location was one of the place's advantages, and the room in the new wing was especially nice.
That said, there were insects in the room every night of our stay - a significant drawback to weigh up alongside the advantages.
It's an example of how, even when a room looks excellent and sits in a pleasant resort, the actual experience depends on other details.
Haad Yao Bayview Resort
We stayed at Haad Yao Bayview for one night in February 2025.
The hotel's location is a real advantage in the Haad Yao area, but the condition of the rooms was very disappointing. The room we stayed in was one of the most neglected we came across on the whole trip.
The gap between the location and the quality of the room is an important consideration if you're deciding whether to book a hotel purely on its view or how close it is to the beach.
The bottom line: Haad Yao is one of the most appealing choices on Koh Phangan if you want a beautiful beach with places to eat and go out. Give priority to the hotel's exact location and the condition of the rooms, not just to photos of the beach.
2Thong Nai Pan Noi - a romantic bay and pampering hotels
Thong Nai Pan Noi is in north-east Koh Phangan, fairly far from the nightlife hubs in the south of the island.
It's a tropical bay surrounded by green hills, with a sandy beach, pampering hotels and a small village with restaurants and places to eat.
The atmosphere is very different from areas such as Haad Rin or Thong Sala.
Here the focus is on a relaxed beach holiday, the view and a hotel you enjoy spending time in during the day too.
What is the Thong Nai Pan Noi accommodation area like?
Some hotels sit right along the beach, while others are up on the hills that surround the bay.
A hotel high on the hill can offer an impressive view, but check the route from your room to the beach, the pool and the village.
Some places have steep paths, steps or internal shuttle services.
On the other hand, the small village near the beach has an advantage: you'll find restaurants and places to eat outside the hotels too.
Who does Thong Nai Pan Noi suit?
The area particularly suits couples looking for a romantic holiday, anyone who prefers a pampering hotel and travellers who want to enjoy the beach without heading off on long trips every day.
It's less suited to anyone planning to go out every evening to the distant nightlife areas or to drive to another side of the island every day.
The pros
- A beautiful tropical bay surrounded by hills.
- A relaxed, romantic atmosphere.
- Luxury hotels and pampering resorts.
- A small village with restaurants and places to eat.
- A beach suited to a long, restful holiday.
The cons
- Fairly far from the nightlife hubs in the west and south.
- The drive there crosses hilly terrain.
- Some hotels are on hillsides.
- Trips to other areas can push up the cost of your holiday.
Panviman Resort Koh Phangan - where we stayed
Panviman Resort is one of the most interesting hotels in the Thong Nai Pan Noi area, thanks to its position on the hill at the end of the bay.
We stayed there in February 2025.
The hotel offers an impressive view, a pool and an atmosphere suited to a romantic holiday. Being close to the village and its restaurants was another plus.
The booking price versus the price at the hotel
One of the interesting things about our stay at Panviman was the difference between the price shown on the booking site and the price we were given at reception.
During our visit in February 2025, the price on the booking site was about 7,600 THB (about $226 / €201) per night, while the rate offered directly at the hotel was about 4,300 THB (about $128 / €114) per night.
That's a significant gap, and it shows why it's worth comparing prices across different booking channels.
That said, don't assume that booking direct is always cheaper. The price varies with the date, availability, room type and booking terms.
The bottom line: Thong Nai Pan Noi particularly suits anyone who wants a quiet, pampering holiday. Its remote location is part of its appeal, but also its main drawback if you plan to go out a lot.
3Thong Nai Pan Yai - a wide beach and a laid-back atmosphere
Thong Nai Pan Yai is right next to Thong Nai Pan Noi, but it's a separate bay with a character of its own.
The beach is wide and surrounded by green hills, with places to stay and restaurants along it.
Compared with its neighbour, Thong Nai Pan Yai suits anyone who prefers a simpler, more laid-back beach atmosphere, with places to stay at different price levels.
Who should stay in Thong Nai Pan Yai?
The area suits couples, families and anyone looking for a quiet beach holiday focused on the sea and the surroundings of where they're staying.
It can also suit anyone who wants to enjoy the Thong Nai Pan area without necessarily choosing a luxury resort.
What should you check?
Although the two bays are geographically close, don't assume that every hotel in one is within a short, easy walk of the other.
The way between the bays crosses the hilly ground that separates them, so check the actual walking or driving route.
Dreamland Resort - the pool and bar
Dreamland Resort is on Thong Nai Pan Yai beach.
During our time on Koh Phangan we visited the hotel's pool and bar area.
The pool area is large and faces the sea, and the bar had a relaxed, pleasant atmosphere.
It's a place where you can enjoy a big pool right beside the beach.
4Chaloklum - staying in a fishing village in north Koh Phangan
Chaloklum is a fishing village in the northern part of Koh Phangan, with a wide bay, a long pier, longtail boats, restaurants and small businesses.
It's an area that offers a different kind of stay from secluded resorts or tourist nightlife hubs.
Staying in Chaloklum suits anyone who prefers a village setting, the chance to wander on foot between restaurants and local spots, and being close to the beaches in the north of the island.
Can you manage in Chaloklum without a car?
In the centre of the village you can walk to the restaurants and the pier.
But if you want to visit other beaches, get to west Koh Phangan or go out in the nightlife areas in the south, you'll need transport.
So Chaloklum can suit travellers who aren't looking for intense nightlife, but not necessarily those who want to explore distant areas every day without hiring a car.
The Sunday market - a perk of staying in the village
One of the most interesting things about Chaloklum is its Sunday food market.
The market has a huge variety of food stalls, and being close to the pier means you can combine your visit with sitting by the sea as the sun goes down.
If you're staying in the village, you can enjoy the market without a long drive back to your hotel.
Trips to Bottle Beach
Chaloklum is also the main departure point for longtail boats to Bottle Beach.
That makes the village an interesting base if you want to visit the remote beach without tackling the challenging overland routes.
The pros
- A fishing-village atmosphere.
- Restaurants and local services.
- A Sunday food market.
- Close to the boat departure point for Bottle Beach.
- Simple places to stay alongside more pampering options nearby.
The cons
- Limited nightlife compared with Haad Rin.
- Fairly far from some of the attractions in the south of the island.
- If you want to visit other places every day, you'll need transport.
The bottom line: Chaloklum is an interesting choice if you prefer a village setting and local restaurants to a party area or a secluded resort.
5Mae Haad and Koh Ma - staying near the famous sandbar
Mae Haad is in north-west Koh Phangan, and it's known for the sandbar that links the beach to the little island of Koh Ma.
The area particularly suits anyone who wants a quiet holiday with natural scenery, swimming and snorkelling.
What is a holiday in Mae Haad like?
The main draw is the beach itself.
Unlike areas with streets full of shops and cafés, here the options for going out are more limited and centre mainly on the beach and the places to stay.
That suits anyone looking to slow down, but less so anyone who wants to go out every evening and choose from lots of restaurants and bars.
Is it worth staying near Koh Ma?
Staying in the area means you can get to the beach and the sandbar at different times of day without planning a special trip.
On the other hand, keep the tides in mind. At certain times large areas of the seabed are exposed, and swimming and snorkelling conditions change accordingly.
The pros
- Close to the Koh Ma sandbar.
- Natural scenery and a beautiful beach.
- Snorkelling options.
- A relaxed atmosphere compared with the island's busier areas.
The cons
- Fairly limited nightlife.
- Less convenient if you want lots of restaurants and shops within walking distance.
- You'll need transport for trips to other areas.
The bottom line: Mae Haad suits anyone looking for a quiet beach holiday with a unique view, and less so anyone who wants a lively area to go out in.
6Srithanu - where to stay for yoga, wellbeing and long stays
Srithanu is in west Koh Phangan and is considered one of the areas most closely associated with yoga, meditation, retreats and a healthy lifestyle.
The area has cafés, restaurants catering to different diets, practice centres and an international community.
So choosing Srithanu is often a choice of lifestyle and certain activities, not just of a beach.
How is the area laid out?
Srithanu isn't just one stretch of beach.
Places to stay are scattered among streets, roads, residential areas and the nearby beaches.
You'll find accommodation close to the yoga centres and cafés, as well as quieter places further from the centre.
How walkable is Srithanu?
One thing to bear in mind is that the area isn't uniformly pleasant to walk around.
When we visited, the main road was very dusty.
So if you're planning to get around on foot between your accommodation, the yoga centres and the cafés, check the actual route rather than relying on the distance shown on the map.
Zen Beach and Flamingo Beach
Both beaches are focal points of the area.
You can combine time on the beach with a seat at a restaurant facing the sea, and enjoy the west coast sunsets.
That said, not every place listed under Srithanu is necessarily right on the beach or within a short walk of it.
Who does Srithanu suit?
The area particularly suits anyone planning to join yoga classes, workshops, retreats or wellbeing and lifestyle activities.
It can also suit a long stay, thanks to the variety of cafés, restaurants and local services.
The pros
- Yoga centres and retreats.
- A varied range of cafés and restaurants.
- An international community.
- Close to the beaches in the west of the island.
- Accommodation options for long stays.
The cons
- Not every place to stay is on the beach.
- Some roads are less pleasant to walk along.
- The area is less suited to anyone looking for intense nightlife.
- The exact location in relation to the activity centres matters a great deal.
The bottom line: Srithanu particularly suits a holiday that combines yoga, practice, cafés and a relaxed lifestyle. Choose your accommodation according to the activities you plan to join.
7Haad Rin - where to stay for the Full Moon Party?
Haad Rin is in south-east Koh Phangan and is the area most closely associated with the Full Moon Party.
Here you'll find Haad Rin Nok and Haad Rin Nai beaches, along with restaurants, shops, bars, hostels and hotels.
The atmosphere changes significantly around the party dates.
Is it worth staying in Haad Rin?
If you're coming specifically for the Full Moon Party and want to walk there, staying in Haad Rin can be a convenient choice.
The advantage is avoiding a long drive at the end of the party.
That said, if you'd rather sleep in peace, check carefully where the hotel is and how close it is to the music and nightlife areas.
Not all hotels in Haad Rin are equally close to the party hubs, and the difference can be huge.
Haad Rin Nok versus Haad Rin Nai
Haad Rin Nok, known as Sunrise Beach, is the main beach where the Full Moon Party takes place.
Haad Rin Nai is on the other side of the area and is also known as Sunset Beach.
Staying around Haad Rin Nai may give you some distance from the heart of the party, but check the exact location, because the noise and traffic aren't confined to one stretch of beach.
What happens to hotel prices at Full Moon?
Around the Full Moon Party dates there's high demand for accommodation in the area.
In February 2025, two days before the party, it was very hard to find a free room, and the search only ended at midnight.
That experience shows the problem with leaving your accommodation booking to the last minute.
If you're planning to come to Koh Phangan specifically for the party, treat hotel availability as a central part of planning your holiday.
Who does Haad Rin suit?
- Anyone coming for the Full Moon Party.
- Travellers who prefer nightlife and going out.
- Anyone who wants restaurants and shops close by.
- Anyone who'd rather walk back from the party.
Who does it suit less?
Haad Rin is less suited to anyone looking for a quiet beach holiday during the busy periods around the parties, or to anyone planning to spend most of their time on the beaches in the north and north-east of the island.
The bottom line: Haad Rin is a good choice if nightlife is the focus of your holiday. If you're looking for peace and quiet, look at other areas or at hotels further from the nightlife hubs.
8Thong Sala - a convenient stay near the pier and the commercial centre
Thong Sala is Koh Phangan's main transport and commercial hub.
The area has the main pier, markets, restaurants, shops, various services and places to stay at a wide range of prices.
Unlike the secluded bays, choosing Thong Sala usually comes down to convenience and accessibility.
Why stay in Thong Sala?
The big advantage is being close to services and transport.
The area can suit anyone arriving on a late ferry, anyone who needs to catch an early boat, or travellers who want to move between different parts of the island.
It also has plenty of places to eat and to buy groceries.
The cons
Thong Sala isn't the first choice if you're picturing a holiday in a secluded tropical bay.
It's a more commercial, transport-oriented area, so staying here feels different from a beachfront hotel in the north of the island.
Who does it suit?
- Travellers who prefer a practical location.
- A short stay before moving on to another island.
- Anyone looking for a choice of restaurants and services.
- Travellers on a tight budget.
The bottom line: Thong Sala suits anyone who prefers easy transport and nearby services to a secluded resort experience.
9Ban Tai and Ban Kai - between the centre and the parties
Ban Tai and Ban Kai lie along Koh Phangan's south coast, between Thong Sala and Haad Rin.
Places to stay in the area include bungalows, guesthouses, villas and resorts.
It's an area that can suit anyone who wants a location with access to the southern part of the island without necessarily staying in the middle of Haad Rin.
Who does the area suit?
The area suits anyone planning to combine nightlife with trips around the island, or anyone looking for somewhere to stay along the south coast.
That said, check how close you'll be to the main road, the bars and the nightlife spots.
Is the beach good for swimming?
On parts of Koh Phangan's south coast the water can be very shallow, especially at low tide.
So if you're looking for a beach where you can swim throughout the day, check the specific swimming conditions in front of the hotel rather than relying on it being described as beachfront.
The bottom line: Ban Tai and Ban Kai are practical areas for anyone who wants to combine easy access to the nightlife hubs with staying outside Haad Rin itself.
10Haad Salad - a quiet bay in the north-west of the island
Haad Salad is in north-west Koh Phangan, close to Haad Yao and Mae Haad.
It's a bay surrounded by hills and greenery, with hotels, bungalows and restaurants along the beach.
The area suits anyone looking for a quieter holiday, with much of the time spent on the sea and around the place they're staying.
Who does Haad Salad suit?
Haad Salad suits couples and families who want a fairly quiet beach with places to eat nearby.
It may suit you less if you want a wide choice of shops and bars within walking distance.
What should you check?
Choosing a hotel in Haad Salad means checking where the rooms are in relation to the beach, the swimming conditions and the walking distance to restaurants.
Here too, a hotel on a hill above the bay may offer a lovely view but involve a steep walk.
The bottom line: Haad Salad suits anyone looking for a beautiful bay and a quiet atmosphere, with less emphasis on nightlife.
11Bottle Beach - is it worth staying on a secluded beach?
Bottle Beach is in the north of Koh Phangan, surrounded by green hills, and isn't connected to the regular road network by a route accessible to private vehicles.
The usual way in is by longtail boat from Chaloklum, or via challenging hiking trails and off-road tracks.
What is it like to stay on the beach?
The places to stay on the beach are fairly simple compared with the island's big resorts, and the main attraction is the view and being by the sea.
During the day the beach can be lively, with visitors arriving by boat, music and restaurants.
In the evening, once the day visitors leave, the atmosphere can be much quieter and more secluded.
What should you know before booking?
The most important point is your dependence on boats.
When the weather or sea conditions don't allow boats to sail, your options for leaving and returning may be limited.
So staying at Bottle Beach suits anyone looking for a degree of disconnection who's willing to give up the option of going out every evening to restaurants and bars in other areas.
The bottom line: Bottle Beach suits a secluded beach experience, not anyone who wants to use their accommodation as a convenient base for exploring Koh Phangan.
Should you stay in more than one area on Koh Phangan?
Koh Phangan is one of those islands where changing the area you stay in can transform your experience.
Staying on the west coast, for example, lets you enjoy sunsets, cafés and restaurants, while staying in Thong Nai Pan gives you a more relaxed holiday centred on the bay and the hotel.
When is it worth splitting your stay?
If you're coming to Koh Phangan for a week or more and want to enjoy several kinds of holiday, consider splitting your time between two areas.
For example, a few nights in a west coast area with restaurants and shops, followed by a few nights in a quiet bay in the north-east.
That way you can enjoy two styles of stay without spending a lot of time travelling every day.
When is it better to stay in one hotel?
If you're only coming for three or four nights, changing hotels can eat up time unnecessarily.
Even if you're planning to hire a car and go on day trips, one place to stay can be enough, as long as it suits the way you like to spend your time.
Which is better: moving hotels or hiring a car?
These are two solutions for different needs.
Changing hotels lets you experience several areas in the mornings and evenings too, without driving between them every day.
A hire car lets you stay in the same place and visit beaches and villages all over the island.
If you'd like to experience several areas but don't want to unpack and repack your suitcases several times, a car can be a convenient solution.
How to check a hotel's location before you book
On Koh Phangan, checking a hotel's location is especially important.
A hotel can look excellent in photos and offer an impressive view, yet suit the holiday routine you have in mind less well.
Is the hotel really on the beach?
There's a difference between a hotel on the sand and a hotel on a hill above the beach.
Both may be described as having a sea view, but getting to the beach is a different experience.
Check the distance from the rooms to the beach and whether there are steps, a steep path or an internal shuttle.
Can you walk out in the evening?
This is one of the most important questions if you don't want to use a vehicle every time you go out.
Check whether the way to the restaurants is along a well-lit, comfortable street, or a hilly road with no pavement.
Even a distance of a few hundred metres on the map isn't necessarily an easy walk.
Are there restaurants outside the hotel?
A secluded hotel can be a great choice for a holiday where you mostly enjoy the pool and the beach.
But if you love going out to a different restaurant every evening, check how many options there are near where you're staying.
Also check the opening hours of nearby businesses, especially in quiet areas.
Is transport available?
Some of the more remote hotels have shuttle services, and sometimes you need to book a taxi in advance.
Find out whether the hotel offers a pier pick-up, how much the ride costs and how you can get back there in the evening.
Does the hotel's location suit the Full Moon period?
If you're coming at party time, check not only the distance from Haad Rin but also the availability of transport and the noise level around the hotel.
In some cases it's better to stay close to the action, and in others it's better to keep your distance.
The decision depends on whether you're planning to go to the party or would rather have a relaxing holiday while it's happening on the island.
Booking hotels on Koh Phangan - Booking, Agoda or direct?
One of the key questions when booking hotels in Thailand is where to find the best price.
The price isn't always the same on booking sites, on the hotel's official website and at reception.
Comparing prices across booking sites
Compare Booking, Agoda and the hotel's own website, and make sure you're comparing the same room type, the same dates and the same booking terms.
Sometimes a price that looks lower doesn't include breakfast, or is based on a non-refundable booking.
Check taxes, fees and payment terms as well.
Is it worth booking direct with the hotel?
Sometimes booking direct can get you a better price, especially when there are empty rooms and the hotel wants to fill them.
At Panviman Resort in February 2025, we were offered about 4,300 THB (about $128 / €114) per night at reception, compared with about 7,600 THB (about $226 / €201) shown on the booking site.
The difference was significant, but don't conclude from it that every hotel offers a lower price if you book direct.
Is it worth arriving without a booking?
Arriving without a booking can give you flexibility, but it carries the risk of finding nothing available, especially at busy times.
Around the Full Moon Party, demand can rise sharply.
If you're arriving on the island with suitcases after a boat crossing and want to avoid hunting for a room late at night, you may prefer to book at least the first few nights in advance.
A low price isn't the only consideration
A cheap hotel in a remote area can end up costing more if you have to pay for taxis every day.
So work out the total cost of your holiday, not just the room rate.
Sometimes it's better to pay a little more for a hotel where you can walk to restaurants and shops, especially on a long stay.
When should you book a hotel on Koh Phangan?
Koh Phangan is a destination where hotel demand can change sharply around certain events and dates.
The Full Moon period
If you're planning to come during the Full Moon Party, book early.
At this time hotels in the popular areas can fill up, and prices can rise.
Booking early is especially important if you want to stay in Haad Rin or at a particular hotel.
Holidays in peak season
Even at times when the weather is especially good, popular hotels on the most sought-after beaches can fill up.
If you're after a particular room, a pool villa or a luxury resort, compare availability well in advance.
Holidays with flexible dates
Travellers who aren't tied to fixed dates can check prices across several neighbouring days.
Sometimes moving by a day or two changes the price or room availability.
That said, factor in the ferry timetables and transfers between the islands too.

Haad Yao is a good choice if you want a beautiful beach with restaurants and sunsets. Thong Nai Pan Noi suits a romantic, pampering holiday, while Thong Nai Pan Yai suits anyone who prefers a more relaxed beach atmosphere. Chaloklum offers a village experience with restaurants and a local character, Mae Haad suits beach and snorkelling lovers, and Srithanu is especially suited to yoga and long stays.
If you're coming for the Full Moon Party you may prefer Haad Rin, and if you're after easy transport and plenty of services you can choose Thong Sala.
The most important advice is to choose the area before you choose the hotel.
On Koh Phangan, a particularly luxurious hotel won't necessarily give you the best holiday if it's far from everything you want to do. A simpler hotel in a location that suits the way you like to go out and explore, on the other hand, can make your holiday far easier and more enjoyable.
Before you book, check the route from the hotel to the beach, your options for going out in the evening, transport and the total cost of your holiday.
