Malibu Beach Resort Samui is a small boutique resort on Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui, with 32 rooms and cottages among tropical trees, a saltwater pool facing the sea and an excellent location right opposite the Central Samui shopping mall. Although it sits in the heart of one of the busiest areas on the island, the grounds themselves are surrounded by greenery and feel relatively quiet. The big advantage is the combination of a beach that is good for swimming, restaurants and shops within walking distance, and an intimate place to stay. The main drawback is that the rooms are not all of the same standard: some are renovated and pleasant, while others still show the age of this long-established resort.

Malibu Beach Resort - a small resort hidden in the heart of Chaweng

It is hard to think of a more central location on Koh Samui than Malibu Beach Resort's.

On one side, the hotel entrance is right opposite Central Samui, the island's big shopping mall, surrounded by restaurants, shops and nightlife. On the other, the moment you step inside the grounds, the atmosphere changes.

The footpaths wind between very tall trees, dense vegetation and low cottages designed in a tropical style. Instead of a grand lobby and a large building, it feels like a small holiday village hidden behind the main road.

This is one of the things that makes Malibu special.

The hotel has been running for more than thirty years, and the ancient trees on its grounds are a central part of its character. The vegetation creates natural shade and separates the guest areas from the activity outside.

With only 32 units, it is considerably smaller than many of Chaweng's resorts.

The design combines wood, natural colours and Thai and Balinese elements. The atmosphere is not grand or formal, but pleasant, green and relaxed.

This is a hotel you choose for its location, its beach and its character, more than for luxury facilities.

The location - right opposite Central Samui

Malibu Beach Resort is at 15/2 Moo 2, in the central part of Chaweng Beach.

Opposite the hotel entrance is Central Samui, with fashion and cosmetics shops, restaurants and cafes.

The market, pharmacies, massage parlours and convenience stores are also a short walk away.

The Green Mango area, known for its nightlife, is a few minutes' walk away, as are other restaurants and bars along the main road.

It is one of the most convenient locations on Koh Samui if you do not want to rent a scooter.

You can spend the morning on the beach, go back to the hotel to freshen up, head out shopping in the afternoon and end the evening at a restaurant or bar, without calling a taxi.

Relative quiet in the middle of the nightlife area

The central location might lead you to expect a noisy hotel, but Malibu manages to offer a relatively calm experience.

The cottages are spread among trees and gardens, away from the main road, so the vegetation and layout of the grounds provide some separation from the bustle.

That is a real advantage if you want to explore Chaweng on foot but prefer to come back to a pleasant place rather than a party hotel.

That said, being close to Koh Samui airport means you sometimes notice aircraft noise, and in some rooms you can hear activity from the surrounding area.

If you are after complete seclusion and countryside quiet, other parts of the island will suit you better.

Rooms and cottages - what is the difference between the categories?

Malibu offers several categories of rooms, studios and cottages, from compact garden rooms up to a spacious 110 sq m Thai chalet.

The rooms combine wooden furniture, natural colours, air conditioning and private bathrooms. Most units have a balcony or outdoor seating area, so you can enjoy the garden outside the room too.

The differences between the categories are most noticeable in size, location and level of privacy.

Studio with Garden View - garden rooms among the trees

The Studio with Garden View rooms measure 24-38 sq m, depending on the unit.

These are separate cottages within the tropical garden, with a king-size bed, a bathroom and a work desk.

Each unit has a covered balcony with a seating area, ideal for a quiet morning coffee or an afternoon with a book.

The advantage is the feeling of a self-contained unit surrounded by greenery, rather than a room in a large building.

That said, the units vary considerably in size. A 24 sq m room is a different experience from a 38 sq m one, especially if you arrive with large suitcases.

For a couple who plan to spend most of the day on the beach, in the shops and in restaurants, this category may well be enough.

Studio with Terrace - a room with a private terrace

The Studio with Terrace category is about 34 sq m.

The rooms have a king-size bed or two single beds, a bathroom and a covered terrace with a seating area.

It is a convenient option for two friends who prefer separate beds, or for a couple who want a simple room with somewhere to sit outside.

The terrace is a real advantage in a hotel like this, where the garden and the greenery are part of the experience.

Deluxe Studio - a more spacious room

Deluxe Studio rooms are 40 sq m, with a king-size bed, a work desk and a covered balcony facing the garden.

They are on the first or second floor, depending on the unit.

The bathroom has a rain shower, and the space inside lets you settle in comfortably even for a stay of several nights.

This is one of the more interesting categories if you want to combine a reasonable price with a relatively spacious room.

The possible drawback is reaching upper-floor rooms by stairs, especially for travellers with heavy suitcases or limited mobility.

Seaside Cottage - a cottage close to the sea

The Seaside Cottage is about 30 sq m, with a king-size bed, a bathroom and a seating area.

Its main advantage is its position close to the beach.

If you plan to spend most of the day in the sea and the pool, the cottage gives you particularly easy access to the facilities.

That said, the room is not especially large, and being close to the public pool and restaurant area may affect how quiet and private it feels.

So it is a particularly good choice if you value being near the beach over having a big room.

Suite with Pool View - a suite near the pool and the beach

The Suite with Pool View category offers about 30 sq m in a separate bungalow.

It has a king-size bed, a bathroom and a covered balcony looking towards the pool and the sea.

The advantage is the location: you can step out of the room and be at the pool and beach in no time.

It is a good option for couples who want to enjoy the hotel's main facilities throughout the day.

That said, being near a shared pool is not the same as having a private pool. The balcony may also feel less private than a cottage set deep in the garden.

Family Cottage - a larger cottage for families

The Family Cottage is about 45 sq m and offers more space than the studio rooms.

The unit is designed in a tropical style and has a large bed, a seating area and a bathroom.

It is an interesting option for small families who prefer a separate unit within the garden.

Before booking, choose the bed arrangement that suits your family, especially if you are travelling with older children.

One-Bedroom Chalet - a 110 sq m Thai chalet

This is one of Malibu's most distinctive categories.

The chalet covers 110 sq m and is designed in a traditional Thai style, with high ceilings, wooden furniture and particularly spacious rooms.

It has a separate bedroom with a double bed, a dressing area, a living room with a daybed, a work desk, a large bathroom and a covered balcony.

The main advantage is the division between bedroom and living room, which lets you spend time in the chalet without being stuck around the bed all day.

It is a particularly interesting category for a longer stay, for a family or for a couple who like large rooms.

The design is more traditional than in the studio rooms, creating a different kind of stay within the same property.

The pool - saltwater, facing Chaweng Beach

Malibu's swimming pool is at the edge of the grounds, right in front of the beach.

The pool among the trees - Malibu Beach Resort, Koh Samui
The pool among the trees

It is an outdoor saltwater pool surrounded by sun loungers and seating areas.

The design is fairly simple, with no dramatic waterfalls or big water features, but its location is a real advantage.

You can swim in the pool, relax with a book, order a drink and be on the beach in a few steps.

The trees and plants create shaded areas alongside the sunbathing spots, so it also works for anyone who does not want to sit in the sun all day.

The pool is not as big as those at family resorts, but it suits the relatively small number of rooms well.

Is the pool good for families?

Yes, mainly for families looking for a calm pool rather than a water park.

There are no big slides or organised activities around the pool, and the atmosphere is geared more towards relaxing.

If you are looking for a resort with several pools and a kids' club, choose another option.

The beach - the advantage that sets Malibu apart from hotels in north Chaweng

One of the most important things when choosing a hotel on Koh Samui is the quality of the beach, not just the distance to it.

In north Chaweng there are stretches where the water is very shallow at low tide and swimming is less comfortable.

Malibu is in the middle of the beach, in an area where the sand is pleasant and getting into the sea is relatively easy.

The seating area facing the beach
Chaweng Beach in front of the hotel - Malibu Beach Resort, Koh Samui
Chaweng Beach in front of the hotel

The beach has soft white sand, clear water when the weather allows, and you can swim depending on sea conditions.

The hotel is right on the beach, so there is no road to cross and no need to leave the grounds to reach the water.

That is a big advantage if you come to Koh Samui for a lazy beach holiday.

A central beach, but with a quiet corner

Despite its location in the heart of Chaweng, Malibu's stretch of beach has a relatively relaxed feel.

You can sit on the sun loungers, go into the sea and enjoy the view.

That said, Chaweng is a busy public beach, and there is a steady flow of holidaymakers, boats and water sports.

If you want a completely secluded, quiet beach, you will prefer other parts of Koh Samui.

But if you like combining a beautiful beach with restaurants and shopping within walking distance, this is a particularly good location.

Marzano Pizzeria - an Italian restaurant facing the sea

One of the hotel's nice extras is Marzano Pizzeria, which operates in the beach area.

The restaurant focuses on Neapolitan-style pizzas with hand-stretched dough, alongside other dishes and drinks.

Its location means you can have lunch or dinner facing the sea without leaving the grounds.

It is a slightly different experience from the classic Thai hotel restaurant, and it gives the place the feel of a relaxed beach club.

Having the restaurant so close is especially convenient if you spend most of the day at the pool and in the sea.

But the biggest advantage is actually the choice outside the hotel.

Central Samui is just across the road, and the area is full of Thai and international restaurants, cafes and food stalls.

You can eat somewhere different every evening without booking a transfer.

Breakfast - simple compared with large resorts

Malibu's breakfast suits the character of a small resort.

It includes Western and Asian breakfast dishes, fruit, eggs, pastries and drinks.

The atmosphere is pleasant thanks to the closeness of the sea and the green grounds.

That said, guest reviews mention a relatively limited choice.

If you are used to lavish five-star breakfasts, this may be a weak point.

If you prefer a light breakfast and then heading out to Chaweng's cafes, you may find it perfectly adequate.

Trees that are decades and centuries old - what makes the grounds special

One of Malibu's most distinctive features is its vegetation.

The hotel has preserved ancient trees, some more than a hundred years old, which form a natural canopy of shade over the garden.

The trees are not just decoration; they are a major part of the atmosphere.

The paths run between them, the cottages are surrounded by greenery, and in parts of the grounds you can barely feel the main road on the other side of the fence.

That is a big plus if you love hotels with natural vegetation, not just manicured lawns.

The green character also sets Malibu apart from newer hotels in Chaweng, where the design relies mainly on modern buildings and large pools.

Service - one of the strong points

Service at the hotel scores relatively highly on booking sites.

The staff are praised for being courteous, helping with luggage and responding quickly to requests.

In a small hotel with a limited number of rooms, personal attention can be a significant part of the experience.

Room cleanliness is also generally rated positively.

That said, service and maintenance are not consistent in every case, and some reviews include complaints about faults in the rooms.

This is one of the important things to consider when choosing a room in an older hotel.

Design and maintenance - an older resort with rooms of different standards

Malibu has been operating for more than thirty years, and its age shows in some of the rooms and buildings.

There are pleasant rooms that have been upgraded, alongside units where you can feel the age of the building.

Reviews mention bathrooms, air conditioning, steep stairs in some buildings and furniture that is not new.

On the other hand, there is also plenty of praise for the spacious rooms, comfortable beds, cleanliness and the staff's quick response to faults.

The differences between units are a good reason to choose a room category by size and location, not just by price.

This is a resort with an older tropical character, not a new hotel with modern, uniform design in every room.

Accessibility - easy paths, stairs to some rooms

Most of the grounds are made up of low buildings and cottages spread along garden paths.

Some rooms are on the ground floor and others on the upper floor.

In some buildings, the upper floor is reached by fairly steep stairs.

If you have difficulty walking, are travelling with a pushchair or have heavy suitcases, choose a ground-floor room.

Being close to the pool and beach can also affect how comfortable your stay is, especially if you plan to spend most of the day by the water.

Is Malibu good for couples?

Yes. It is a hotel that particularly suits couples who want a comfortable beach holiday without necessarily paying for a luxury resort.

The cottages, the garden, the pool facing the sea and the option of walking out to restaurants in the evening make it a convenient choice.

For something more romantic, the Suite with Pool View or Seaside Cottage may appeal because they are close to the beach.

If you prefer a particularly large, spacious room, consider the One-Bedroom Chalet.

That said, if you are looking for a suite with a private pool, a lavish spa or top-end luxury service, compare Malibu with other hotels in Chaweng.

Is Malibu good for families?

Malibu offers a few convenient options for families, especially the Family Cottage and One-Bedroom Chalet.

The grounds are relatively small, and there is direct beach access and an outdoor pool.

The location opposite Central Samui is also a real advantage for families, with restaurants, shops and services just across the road.

That said, there is no big kids' club, water park or wide range of activities here.

For families looking for a beach, a pool and a central location, it can work very well.

For families who prefer a resort with lots of facilities for children, there are other options on the island.

Is the hotel a good choice for women travelling solo?

One of Malibu's main advantages is its location.

Being close to Central Samui, restaurants and shops means you can get around on foot without depending on transport every time you go out.

Being able to reach the beach directly from the grounds is also particularly convenient.

The green garden and the relatively relaxed atmosphere suit anyone who prefers an independent beach holiday rather than a party hotel.

It is a good combination of a central location and a pleasant place to come back to at the end of the day.

Malibu compared with other hotels in Chaweng

In Chaweng you will find luxury hotels, long-established resorts, boutique hotels and social hostels.

Baan Chaweng Beach Resort & Spa also has a central beachfront location, with a tropical garden and a pool. Both hotels suit anyone who prefers a classic beach holiday to a grand modern hotel.

Muang Samui Spa Resort offers a more luxurious, traditional experience, with large suites, jacuzzis and a spa.

Dara Samui Beach Resort combines traditional Thai design with a central location, but the adjacent beach is less comfortable for swimming.

SALA Samui Chaweng is a step up in luxury, with modern design, private pools and upmarket restaurants.

Socialtel mainly suits anyone looking for nightlife and social activities, while Malibu focuses on a more relaxed beach holiday.

Malibu's big advantage is the combination of a location right opposite Central Samui, a beach that is relatively good for swimming and small, green grounds.

The drawbacks - what should you know before booking?

The rooms vary in standard: some units are upgraded and pleasant, others are older.

Limited facilities: the hotel has a pool and a beach restaurant, but not a wide range of leisure or spa facilities.

A relatively simple breakfast: the choice is not as rich as at large luxury hotels.

Stairs in some buildings: upper-floor rooms may be less convenient if you have difficulty walking.

Aircraft noise: being close to the airport can be noticeable from time to time.

Privacy varies: rooms next to the pool and restaurant may be more exposed to guests passing by.

You pay for the location: in busy periods the price also reflects the closeness to the beach and the shopping mall, not just the standard of the room.

Who is Malibu Beach Resort especially good for?

Couples: green, intimate grounds, with a pool and the beach a few steps away.

Shoppers: Central Samui is just across the road.

Anyone who does not want to rent a vehicle: restaurants, shops, cafes and nightlife within walking distance.

Anyone who prefers a beach holiday: right on a stretch of beach that is relatively good for swimming.

Travellers who like rooms set in a garden: low cottages and tropical plants instead of a large hotel building.

Who should choose a different hotel?

Malibu is less suited to anyone looking for particularly modern, glamorous design.

It is also less suited to anyone who wants a villa with a private pool, a large spa or plenty of activities for children.

Travellers with limited mobility should make sure to choose a ground-floor unit.

And if you are looking for complete quiet away from nightlife and the airport, you may prefer a more secluded part of Koh Samui.

Is Malibu good value for money?

Value for money depends on the room category and the time of year.

If you are mainly after an excellent location and a beach holiday, Malibu has a real advantage.

It is hard to ignore the convenience of a hotel right on the sea and opposite the island's biggest shopping mall.

The pool, the garden and the personal service also add to the experience.

On the other hand, when the price is high and close to that of newer, more polished hotels, compare the room size, its condition and the facilities.

For a holiday where you plan to spend most of the day out, a simple garden room may be excellent value.

If you prefer to spend a lot of time in your room, consider the Deluxe Studio or the One-Bedroom Chalet.

The bottom line - should you book Malibu Beach Resort Samui?

Malibu Beach Resort Samui is a small, green boutique resort that combines direct beach access with one of the most convenient locations on Koh Samui.

The ancient trees, the cottages among the gardens and the saltwater pool facing the sea give it a character unlike many of the newer hotels in Chaweng.

Its big strengths are the location opposite Central Samui, the beach, the relatively relaxed atmosphere and the friendly service.

The main drawback is that the rooms vary in standard, along with the fact that this is an older resort with relatively simple facilities.

If you are looking for a pleasant hotel on Chaweng Beach where you can walk out to the shops, restaurants and nightlife, Malibu is a good choice. Before booking, compare the room categories and choose a unit that matches your expectations in terms of size, privacy and comfort.
