Dara Samui Beach Resort is a four-star hotel right on Chaweng Beach in Koh Samui, with spacious rooms, a beachfront swimming pool and traditional Thai design inspired by the Lanna culture of northern Thailand. Its location is one of its biggest strengths: you step out of the hotel onto Chaweng's main street, with restaurants, shops and nightlife all within walking distance. The hotel takes guests aged 12 and over, and suits couples and travellers who want a fairly calm base in the middle of a busy tourist area. The significant downside is swimming in the sea - the water in front of the hotel is very shallow and the beach is affected by the tides.

Dara Samui Beach Resort - a small hotel with traditional Thai character

Chaweng is one of the most sought-after areas of Koh Samui, thanks to its mix of beach, restaurants, shops, cafes and nightlife.

Dara Samui Beach Resort sits in the northern part of the central stretch, on a long, narrow plot that runs from the main road down to the beach.

From the entrance you walk past buildings in traditional Thai style, inner courtyards and tropical planting until you reach the pool and the beach.

The entrance to the grounds

The design is one of the things that sets this place apart.

Instead of the clean white minimalism of Koh Samui's newer boutique hotels, this is a world of dark wood furniture, carved pieces, patterned fabrics and warm colours.

Throughout the grounds you can see the influence of Lanna style, which is associated with northern Thailand.

It is an interesting choice if you prefer hotels with character and local design over modern rooms that look the same in every destination.

Bear in mind, though, that the traditional style comes with a fairly old hotel, and some of the rooms and facilities need a refresh.

The location - in the heart of Chaweng, no transport needed

One of Dara Samui's biggest advantages is its location.

The hotel is at 162/2 Moo 2, on Chaweng Beach Road.

Its entrance opens onto a main street lined with Thai and international restaurants, cafes, shops, supermarkets, massage places and pharmacies.

The Central Samui shopping centre is within walking distance, and so are Chaweng's nightlife areas.

The advantage is obvious: you can walk out of the hotel at any hour and find somewhere to eat or wander, without calling a taxi.

On Koh Samui in particular, where some resorts sit in fairly isolated bays, that makes a real difference.

Is the hotel quiet despite the central location?

Inside the grounds the atmosphere is calmer than on the main street.

The room buildings and the planting create some separation between the street and the guest areas.

That said, Chaweng is a busy tourist area, and in some rooms you can hear noise from the surroundings, from bars and clubs or from planes passing overhead.

If you are after total quiet, consider an inner room as far from the street as possible.

But if you like combining a beach holiday with walking out to restaurants and shops, the location works especially well.

The rooms - large and decorated in Thai style

Dara Samui offers Deluxe rooms, villas and large suites.

One of its strengths is space: even the entry-level Deluxe rooms are 42 sq m, while the large suites reach 96 and 108 sq m.

The rooms have dark wood furniture, large beds, private balconies and roomy bathrooms.

The decor is warm and fairly rich, with traditional furniture details and patterned fabrics.

But the difference between categories is significant, especially if you want a suite with a separate living room or a room close to the pool.

Deluxe Room - a spacious 42 sq m room

Deluxe rooms are the hotel's entry-level category.

They have a king bed or two singles, a large bathroom with a bath and shower, a private balcony and a work desk.

The balcony looks onto the tropical garden, not the sea.

The rooms are on the first, second and third floors, and the upper floors are reached by stairs.

At 42 sq m there is room to be fairly comfortable, even with large suitcases.

That is an advantage over other boutique hotels in Chaweng, where the entry-level rooms are smaller.

On the other hand, the rooms are decorated in an older style, and some of the furniture and bathrooms can feel dated.

Dara Villa - a villa by the pool

The Dara Villas are in the area close to the hotel pool.

A villa offers about 46 sq m, a queen bed, a private balcony and a bathroom with a bath and an outdoor shower.

The balcony looks partly towards the pool and is surrounded by greenery.

The main advantage is having a separate unit, fairly close to the facilities and the beach.

It is important to distinguish between a villa near the pool and a villa with a private pool.

The Dara Villa does not have a private pool; guests use the hotel's shared pool.

This category suits mainly couples looking for a more intimate room with a pleasant outdoor area.

Deluxe Suite - a large suite with a living room

The Deluxe Suites are 96 sq m and offer a far more spacious stay than the standard rooms.

They have a bedroom with a king bed, a separate living room, a dining area and a private balcony overlooking the garden.

The bathroom is particularly large, with a deep bath and a shower.

The suites are on the second and third floors and are reached by stairs.

It is a particularly good option for couples planning to stay several nights who want a room they can also enjoy during the day.

The advantage is not only the size but the separation between the bedroom and the living room.

You can sit, read or rest in a separate space instead of spending all your time around the bed.

Two-Bedroom Suite - two bedrooms and a shared living room

The largest suite in the hotel covers 108 sq m.

It has two bedrooms, a living room, a large bathroom and a private balcony facing the garden.

One bedroom has a king bed and the other a queen bed.

The suite can sleep up to five guests, subject to the hotel's terms.

It is on the first floor, a short walk from the pool, the restaurant and the beach.

It is an interesting option for a group of friends or a family with children aged 12 and over who want to stay together without booking two separate rooms.

A hotel for adults and teenagers aged 12+

Dara Samui is for guests aged 12 and over.

That means it does not suit families with babies or young children.

This policy gives the hotel a calmer feel than family resorts with kids' clubs, toddler pools and activities throughout the day.

Still, it is not a couples-only hotel. Groups of friends and families with teenagers can stay here too.

If you want a couple's holiday with less young-child activity around the pool, that is a plus.

The pool - facing the sea, but not especially large

The hotel pool is at the far end of the grounds, next to the beach.

It has rounded lines, seating areas, sun loungers and a bar serving drinks.

The long pool

The greenery, the decorative touches and the closeness to the sea make it a pleasant place to spend the day.

You can move between the pool and the beach in a moment, and order a drink or a light meal without going far.

But bear in mind that the pool is not especially large.

It is better suited to a short swim, a dip and relaxing in the water than to swimming laps.

The number of sun loungers is also fairly limited, and at busy times it can be hard to find a free one at peak hours.

This is one of the hotel's most noticeable drawbacks compared with larger resorts.

The beach - lovely for sitting, less good for swimming

Dara Samui is right on Chaweng Beach.

The beach in front of the hotel - Dara Samui Beach Resort, Koh Samui
The beach in front of the hotel
Sun loungers on the beach - Dara Samui Beach Resort, Koh Samui
Sun loungers on the beach

In terms of location that is a big advantage: there is no road to cross and no need to drive to reach the sea.

But the beach in front of the hotel calls for managed expectations.

The water is very shallow

This part of Chaweng has a shallow, rocky area that separates the beach from the deeper water.

At low tide the water recedes and the depth can be very low.

So although the beach is pretty and pleasant to sit on, it is not ideal if you want to get in and swim at any time of day.

To reach an area where swimming is easier, you can walk south along the beach.

The high tide also affects the strip of sand

At high tide the strip of beach in front of the hotel can shrink considerably.

Sometimes the water comes very close to the grounds, leaving less room to walk or lie on the sand.

This matters especially if you are choosing a hotel based on photos of a wide beach lined with sun loungers.

The hotel suits people who enjoy a pool, a sea view and meals on the beach, but if you are coming to Koh Samui mainly to swim in the sea, it is worth considering other parts of Chaweng too.

Breakfast - one of the hotel's strengths

Breakfast at Dara Samui is a buffet with Western and Asian dishes.

The spread includes fruit, pastries, eggs cooked to order, hot Thai dishes and more.

The live cooking station lets you order eggs in different styles, pancakes and other breakfast dishes.

Breakfast is considered one of the hotel's strong points, especially for its variety and the service.

The restaurant area has a pleasant atmosphere, close to the pool and the beach.

It is a plus if you like to start the day with a proper meal before heading out on trips.

Dara Serene - a beach restaurant with a romantic atmosphere

One of the things that makes this hotel stand out is the chance to have dinner on the beach.

The Dara Serene restaurant serves Thai and Western dishes, fish and seafood, with tables set close to the water.

On some evenings tables are set up on the sand, and the atmosphere becomes especially romantic.

You can sit facing the sea, enjoy a meal and a cocktail, and combine the evening with a walk along the beach.

It is one of the more interesting experiences the hotel offers beyond the rooms and the pool.

That said, prices at the restaurant can be high compared with local restaurants on the main street.

Thanks to the hotel's location, you can also head out to a different place every evening and enjoy Chaweng's huge choice.

The service - one of the standout strengths

Service at Dara Samui scores particularly highly.

The staff are courteous, help with requests and give guests personal attention.

Reception is open 24 hours a day, and the staff can help arrange transfers and trips.

In a relatively small hotel, personal service is more noticeable than in a large resort.

This is one of the areas where Dara really stands out, even alongside the reservations about the age of the rooms and facilities.

Cleanliness and maintenance - the downside of an older hotel

Dara Samui has traditional design and a distinctive character, but some of the rooms and facilities are no longer new.

The dark furniture, wooden floors and Thai-style bathrooms give it character, but some rooms show signs of wear.

You may find old furniture, bathrooms in need of a refresh and, occasionally, one-off maintenance issues.

Soundproofing is also uneven, and in some rooms you can hear noise from neighbouring rooms or the surroundings.

General cleanliness scores well, but if you expect a modern hotel with new, carefully finished interiors, you may prefer another option.

This hotel suits people who love traditional character and space more than those looking for contemporary design.

Accessibility - stairs in some room categories

One of the important things to know before booking Dara Samui is the layout of the hotel.

Some rooms are on the second and third floors and are reached by stairs.

For travellers with limited mobility, heavy luggage or physical limitations, this is a significant consideration.

Ground-floor Deluxe rooms or the Two-Bedroom Suite may be easier to access, depending on where the unit is.

The way to the pool and the beach also runs through the grounds, so factor in the distance between your room and the facilities.

Is Dara Samui good for couples?

Yes. It is one of the groups the hotel suits best.

The traditional Thai design, the spacious rooms, the beach restaurant and the option of going out in the evening to restaurants and bars make it especially comfortable for a couple's holiday.

For couples who want a large room, the Deluxe Suite offers a separate living room and 96 sq m of space.

If you prefer to be close to the pool and the beach, the Dara Villa can be an interesting option.

The hotel particularly suits couples who want to combine a fairly relaxed holiday with nights out in Chaweng.

Is the hotel good for groups of friends?

Yes, especially in the Two-Bedroom Suite.

Staying together in a large unit with a shared living room suits a group of friends planning to spend a few nights on Koh Samui.

The central location means you can walk out in the evening to restaurants and nightlife.

The fact that the hotel takes guests aged 12 and over may also suit people looking for a fairly calm atmosphere around the pool.

Dara Samui compared with other hotels in Chaweng

Chaweng has a wide range of boutique hotels and resorts, and which one to choose depends on the kind of holiday you want.

Muang Samui Spa Resort also offers traditional Thai design and spacious rooms, along with a tropical garden and a spa. It suits people who prefer a five-star resort with more facilities.

Sareeraya Villas & Suites offers particularly large suites and private pool options, with a more upmarket feel.

SALA Samui Chaweng stands out for its modern design, its private pool suites and its polished facilities.

LA VIDA Samui offers contemporary design in a small boutique hotel, but its entry-level rooms are more compact.

Chura Samui offers a beachfront infinity pool and a calm tropical atmosphere, but it is further north.

Dara Samui particularly suits people looking for a large room, traditional Thai design, personal service and a location close to the centre of Chaweng's action.

The downsides - what you need to know before booking

Swimming in the sea: the beach in front is very shallow, and at high tide the strip of sand can be especially narrow.

A fairly small pool: the pool is pleasant and well designed, but not large enough if you want a roomy swimming area.

Older rooms and facilities: some rooms need a refresh, especially the furniture and bathrooms.

Stairs: some rooms and suites are on upper floors with no lift access.

Noise from the surroundings: being close to the main street, the nightlife and the airport can be noticeable in some rooms.

A limited number of sun loungers: at busy times it is harder to find a free spot by the pool and on the beach.

No extensive resort facilities: this hotel focuses on its rooms, pool and beach restaurant, not on a large spa or lots of activities.

Who is Dara Samui best for?

Couples: a hotel with a traditional atmosphere and a romantic beach restaurant.

Travellers who like large rooms: even the Deluxe rooms are 42 sq m, and the suites are much roomier.

Anyone who would rather not hire a car: the location lets you walk to Chaweng's restaurants, shops and nightlife.

Lovers of traditional Thai design: wooden furniture, warm spaces and details inspired by Lanna culture.

Groups of friends and families with teenagers: the Two-Bedroom Suite sleeps up to five guests.

Who should choose a different hotel?

Dara Samui is less suitable for families with children under 12.

It is also less suitable if you are looking for a large swimming pool, a villa with a private pool or a hotel with cutting-edge design.

Travellers with limited mobility should choose somewhere with easier access to the rooms and facilities.

And if you are coming to Koh Samui mainly to swim in the sea, you may prefer another part of Chaweng Beach.

Is Dara Samui good value for money?

The hotel's big strengths are its location, the size of the rooms and the service.

Even the basic room offers a fairly comfortable amount of space, and the suites give you a lot of room at a price that may be lower than at newer luxury hotels.

Being able to get around on foot is another significant advantage.

On the other hand, the pool is not large, the beach is less suited to swimming and some rooms need a refresh.

So the value is good mainly if you care more about a large room, a central location and a traditional atmosphere than about new facilities or a perfect swimming beach.

The bottom line - should you book Dara Samui Beach Resort?

Dara Samui Beach Resort is a four-star hotel with traditional Thai character, spacious rooms, a beachfront pool and an excellent location in Chaweng.

Its big strengths are the service, the closeness to restaurants and shops, the beach restaurant and the chance to stay in particularly large suites.

On the other hand, the hotel is fairly old, the pool is small and conditions for swimming in the sea are not ideal.

For couples and travellers looking for a spacious room and a central location, Dara Samui can be a very good choice. If you want a beach that is especially easy to swim from, modern design or lavish resort facilities, compare it with other hotels in Chaweng.
