The Briza Beach Resort Samui is a four-star resort on the northern stretch of Chaweng Beach in Koh Samui. It offers unusually spacious rooms, two-bedroom family villas, private plunge pools and a terraced tropical garden that runs down towards the sea. The location gives you relatively quiet surroundings while keeping Chaweng's restaurants, shops and nightlife within reach. Its big strengths are the size of the rooms, the options for families and the friendly service. On the other hand, this is an older resort where some rooms need a refresh, and you should be prepared for steps, sloping paths and a beach that is not ideal for swimming at every hour.
The Briza Beach Resort - a tropical resort with classic character
The Briza sits in the northern part of Chaweng, close to the beachfront and within walking distance of the main tourist area.
The resort is built on terraced ground, with low-rise buildings, tropical gardens, paths linking the room wings and pools on different levels.

The architecture combines wood, Thai-style roofs, dark furniture and traditional details. It is a different look from Koh Samui's newer hotels, which often go for white walls, glass and minimalist lines.
The feel here is that of an established tropical resort, with large rooms and private outdoor corners.
One interesting feature is the way the accommodation areas are separated. Some rooms are close to the lobby and the main pools, others sit on lower levels, and there are villas near the sea.
So even within the same hotel, the experience of staying here can be quite different.
The location - north Chaweng, between peace and island life
The location is one of the Briza's strengths, especially if you like heading out of the hotel on foot.
The resort is on the main road in north Chaweng, with restaurants, convenience stores, pharmacies and massage places close by.
Central Chaweng, where many of the shops, bars and nightspots are concentrated, is a longer walk away.
Walking from the hotel to the main hubs usually takes around fifteen to twenty minutes, depending on where you are going.
That is a reasonable distance if you enjoy walking, but not necessarily comfortable for every family with small children, especially in Koh Samui's heat and humidity.
If you would rather get back to the hotel quickly after a night out, you can take a taxi.
Is the area quiet?
Compared with central Chaweng, the northern part is calmer.
The resort itself is surrounded by greenery, and some of the rooms are set back from the main road.
It is an interesting choice if you want a pool-and-beach holiday but still want restaurants and nightlife within a reasonable distance.
That said, the proximity to the road and to Koh Samui airport can be noticeable at times, and there is also restaurant and bar activity along the beach.
The rooms - space is the big advantage
One of the things that sets The Briza apart is the size of its accommodation.
Even the entry-level Deluxe Balcony rooms are larger than standard rooms at many hotels in Chaweng.
The hotel offers double rooms, rooms with a plunge pool, triple rooms, family duplexes and villas with private pools.
The differences between the categories are significant in terms of layout, privacy and pool access.
Deluxe Balcony - a large room with a balcony
The Deluxe Balcony room covers 58 sq m, including the balcony.
It has a king bed or two singles, a spacious sleeping area, a bathroom with both bath and shower, and a private balcony of about 9 sq m.
The balcony looks out over the grounds and works well for a coffee or a rest during the day.
This category suits couples who like a roomy room but do not need a private pool.
The size of the room is a real plus over a stay of several nights, especially if you arrive with a few suitcases.
Deluxe Room with Plunge Pool - a room with a private plunge pool
This category offers about 60 sq m, including an outdoor area with a private plunge pool of about 9 sq m.
You can step out of the room onto the terrace and straight into the water.
The pool is mainly for dipping and cooling off rather than for swimming laps.
It is a convenient option for couples who want a private pool without booking a larger, more expensive villa.

The room has a king bed or two singles, a large bathroom and a seating area.
The private pool is a real advantage, but the level of privacy can vary depending on where the room is and the buildings around it.
Deluxe Triple Room - a room for three
The Deluxe Triple is about 38 sq m and sleeps three.
It has three beds, so it can suit a small group of friends or a family that does not need two bedrooms.
It is a particularly useful option when you want to avoid booking two separate rooms.
However, if you are after a lot of space and a proper seating area, one of the family units may suit you better.
Two Bedrooms Duplex Pool Side - a family duplex by the pool
One of the most interesting categories at the Briza is the family duplex.
The unit covers 150 sq m over two levels, with two bedrooms and separate bathrooms.
The upstairs bedroom has a king bed, and the lower level has two singles.
The unit also has a private terrace with easy access to the pool area.
The split over two levels gives more privacy to families with older children or to two couples travelling together.
The base rate is for four guests, and up to six can stay for an extra charge, subject to the hotel's conditions.
Keep the internal stairs in mind, especially if you are travelling with toddlers.
Two Bedrooms Villa with Plunge Pool - two bedrooms and a plunge pool
This villa covers 133 sq m and has two separate bedrooms.
At the heart of the unit is an outdoor area with a seating corner and a private plunge pool of about 9 sq m.
The villa suits a family or a group of friends who want to stay together while keeping the bedrooms separate.
The pool is within the unit itself, so you can use it throughout the day without going to the public areas.
The category is designed for four guests, with the option of a fifth for an extra charge.
It is a particularly interesting option for families who want a resort holiday with shared living space.
Two Bedrooms Villa with Private Pool - a large villa with a private pool
This is a villa of about 150 sq m, with two bedrooms and a private pool.
Compared with the villa with the small plunge pool, this category offers a more substantial pool area.
It suits families and groups of friends who want to spend a lot of time in the unit.
The villa is designed for four guests, with the option to extend occupancy to six for an extra charge.
For a family spending several nights in Koh Samui and planning to mix days out with rest days at the hotel, this is one of the most interesting options at the Briza.
Ocean Front Villa with Private Pool - a villa facing the sea
This is one of the most luxurious categories at the resort.
The villa sits on the beachfront and offers open sea views, a private pool and a spacious living area.
The private pool is about 28 sq m, considerably larger than the plunge pools of the Deluxe rooms.
The closeness to the beach and the open views make this category especially well suited to a romantic break for two.
It is also the room type where the difference between the Briza and a simpler resort is most noticeable: space, a private pool and a direct view of the sea all at once.
The main pools - a complex on three levels
Apart from the private pools in some of the rooms, the Briza has a shared pool complex built on three levels.
The pools are for adults and children, and there is a drinks bar next to them.
The terraced layout creates different swimming and lounging areas, so you can find relatively quiet corners alongside livelier family zones.
That said, the pools are not particularly large compared with Koh Samui's giant hotels.
They are fine for a gentle swim, cooling off and spending the day, but there is no water park or a lot of entertainment facilities.
The pool area itself can also feel a little dated in terms of design and upkeep, especially compared with newer resorts.
The beach - lovely views, but not always comfortable for swimming
One of the most important things to understand before booking The Briza is what you get in terms of the beach.
The hotel is in the northern part of Chaweng, and at the end of the grounds there is direct access to the sea.
The area offers lovely views of the bay, tropical trees and places to sit facing the water.

But the beach right in front is not necessarily the best place to swim.
At certain times, especially at low tide, the water is very shallow and the sea pulls back a long way from the shore.
Sandy patches are sometimes exposed, and you have to wade out to reach a decent depth.
On some days the conditions of the seabed and the water make swimming less comfortable.
This matters especially if you are choosing the hotel on the strength of photos of blue sea and a tropical beach.
The beach can be very pretty for sitting and walking, but it is not always suited to a spontaneous swim.
If you plan to spend long hours in the water, it is worth combining the hotel pools with visits to other parts of Chaweng Beach.
The terraced grounds - beautiful, but less accessible
The Briza is built on a slope, with paths and steps linking the room areas, the lobby, the pools and the beach.
This layout gives the hotel an attractive tropical character, with buildings set at different heights and views that change as you move through the grounds.
In practical terms, though, it can be a drawback.
If you are staying in a higher room, you may have to go up and down steps or walk along sloping paths every time you head to the beach or the pool.
For families with pushchairs, travellers with walking difficulties or anyone who struggles with the humidity and heat, the distances and climbs can be noticeable.
The hotel uses a small buggy to ferry guests around the grounds, but its availability depends on the staff.
If accessibility matters to you, it is worth choosing in advance a room that is relatively close to the facilities you plan to use.
Breakfast - facing the sea
Breakfast is served at the Kalimantan restaurant, in the area near the beach.
It is a buffet, with hot dishes, eggs, fruit, pastries and both Western and Asian options.
The setting is one of its strengths: you can start the day in a relatively open space close to the sea.
The choice is considered reasonable for a four-star hotel, but it is not always as rich or varied as at large luxury hotels.
Satisfaction with breakfast also varies between guests. Alongside those who enjoyed the food and the atmosphere, some reviews mention a relatively limited selection and repetition from day to day.
If you are planning a long stay, this is worth bearing in mind.
Restaurants and bars - food and drinks facing the sea
Besides the Kalimantan restaurant, the hotel has two main bars.
The Pool Bar is next to the hotel pools and serves soft drinks, cocktails and beer during the day.
The Beach Bar is on the beachfront and is also open in the evenings.
It is a good spot for a drink facing the sea, and on some evenings there is live music.
If you like to end the day in a relaxed atmosphere by the water, this is one of the place's pleasant perks.
That said, being in Chaweng also means you can choose from plenty of restaurants outside the hotel.
Nearby you will find local Thai food, Western restaurants, cafés and food stalls.
So there is no need to rely only on the Briza's kitchen.
Service - one of the main strengths
The Briza's staff receive a lot of positive reviews.
Guests mention the warm welcome, the willingness to help and the way requests are handled during their stay.
Service matters all the more in a hotel with terraced grounds, where you sometimes need help with luggage or a lift around the property.
Reception is open 24 hours a day, and the staff can help arrange transfers, tours and other services.

This is one of the areas where the hotel manages to keep up a good standard, even though some of the facilities and rooms are not especially new.
Cleanliness and upkeep - why it pays to arrive with the right expectations
The Briza is an older resort, and it shows in some of the rooms and public areas.
Alongside spacious, pleasant rooms, you may find older furniture, signs of wear and decor that has not had a full refresh.
Some rooms may feel a little dated compared with Koh Samui's new boutique hotels.
The bathrooms, balconies and pool areas are not entirely consistent in their condition either.
On the other hand, many rooms are well maintained, and the cleanliness is generally well rated.
So it is worth choosing your room category on the understanding that the Briza's advantage lies mainly in space and accommodation options, not in cutting-edge design or particularly luxurious finishes.
Spa and gym
The hotel has a small gym with equipment for a basic workout.
It is not a big fitness centre, but it lets you keep up an exercise routine while on holiday.
Alongside it there are spa and treatment areas where you can book massages and relaxing treatments.
These facilities round out the resort experience, but they are not its main draw.
If you are looking for a luxury spa hotel with a wide range of treatment rooms and wellness facilities, you may prefer another option.
Is the Briza good for couples?
Yes, especially for couples who would rather have a large room and a private pool than particularly modern design.
A Deluxe room with a plunge pool lets you enjoy the water in relative privacy without booking an expensive villa.
For a more romantic experience, the Ocean Front Villa with its large private pool and sea view can be a particularly interesting option.
Still, it is important to remember that this is not a luxury boutique resort on the level of SALA Samui Chaweng.
The price may be lower, but so is the standard of design, upkeep and facilities.
Is the Briza good for families?
One of The Briza's big advantages is its range of family units.
There are two-bedroom duplexes, spacious villas and private pools, with accommodation for four to six guests.
For a family planning to spend a few days in Koh Samui, the extra space can make a real difference.
Instead of booking two separate rooms, you can choose one large unit where the whole family stays together.
However, the terraced grounds and the internal stairs in the duplexes are less convenient for families with toddlers.
Private pools also call for close supervision when you are staying with young children.
For families with older children, the duplexes and villas can work very well.
The Briza compared with other hotels in north Chaweng
North Chaweng has several hotels with quite different characters.
At LA VIDA Samui the emphasis is on a relatively small boutique hotel with modern design, though its entry-level rooms are compact.
Sareeraya Villas & Suites offers large suites, a pool facing the sea and a more upmarket atmosphere, at prices that may be higher.
SALA Samui Chaweng stands out for its carefully considered architecture, private pools and luxury-level service.
The Briza sits at a different point in terms of facilities and design.
Its advantage is the chance to find very large rooms, family duplexes and villas with private pools, at prices that may be more accessible.
It suits travellers who are willing to compromise to some extent on new design and upkeep in return for space and family-friendly accommodation.
The downsides - what to know before you book
Design and upkeep: some rooms and facilities are dated and need a refresh.
Steps and slopes: the terraced grounds are less suitable for anyone who finds walking difficult or is travelling with a pushchair.
The beach: access to the sea is easy, but swimming conditions in north Chaweng are strongly affected by low tide.
Breakfast: the choice is reasonable, but not always especially rich.
Privacy: in some of the rooms with a plunge pool, the water area may be somewhat overlooked by neighbouring rooms.
Distance from central Chaweng: you can walk there, but the hotel is not right in the heart of the nightlife.
Standard of facilities: despite the impressive accommodation options, this is a four-star resort, not a new luxury hotel.
Who is The Briza best for?
Families with older children: duplexes and two-bedroom villas with plenty of space.
Groups of friends: the option to stay together in one large unit instead of booking separate rooms.
Couples who want a private pool: a range of rooms and villas with plunge pools at different prices.
Anyone who prefers relative quiet: north Chaweng is calmer than the centre.
Travellers who like big rooms: even the regular Deluxe rooms offer plenty of space.
Who should choose another hotel?
The Briza is less suitable if you are looking for cutting-edge design and a particularly high-end resort.
It is also less suitable for travellers with limited mobility, because of the terraced layout.
Families with babies and toddlers should think carefully about the steps and the access to the private pools.
If you want a beach where you can swim comfortably at any time of day, you may prefer another part of Chaweng.
And if you want to be right in the middle of the nightlife, a hotel further south may be more convenient.
Is The Briza good value for money?
Value for money depends mainly on the room category and the rate you book.
If you are looking for a spacious room or a large family villa, the Briza can offer some particularly interesting options.
A 150 sq m duplex or a two-bedroom villa with a private pool are advantages you will not always find at smaller hotels in the same price bracket.
That said, the price should also reflect the standard of design and upkeep.
If the rate is close to that of newer, more polished hotels in Chaweng, it is worth comparing the options carefully.
On the other hand, when there is an attractive deal, the space and the private pools can make the Briza a very worthwhile choice.
The bottom line - should you book The Briza Beach Resort?
The Briza Beach Resort is a four-star resort in north Chaweng, with exceptionally spacious rooms, a range of family villas, private pools and friendly service.
Its main advantages are the space, the chance to stay together as a family and a location that lets you combine a resort holiday with Chaweng's restaurants and shops.
On the other hand, bear in mind that some of the rooms and facilities are dated, the grounds are terraced and the beach is not ideal for swimming at all hours.
If you are looking for a large room or a family villa with a private pool at a price that is reasonable compared with luxury hotels, The Briza is definitely worth a look. But if your priority is modern design, new finishes and a particularly polished stay, it is worth comparing it with other hotels in north Chaweng.
